Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which group does Jack lead, when we first meet him in the novel?

Answer: The Choir

The Choir's entry into the novel: "The creature was a party of boys, marching approximately in step in two parallel lines and dressed in strangely eccentric clothing." They are marching towards the sound of the conch, but are still wearing cloaks and caps on the tropical island.
2. On his first attempt, did Jack manage to kill a pig?

Answer: No

Jack becomes less and less inhibited by the old life and the old ways. The turning point for him, a choirboy in church, is when he kills his first pig. The church associates murder with the Devil, so Jack feels that he cannot turn back to the old life.
3. Is Jack the only character in the book for whom we know his full name?

Answer: No

Jack isn't the only character for whom the reader is told his full name, however, he is the only "main" character for which we do. The other character who supplies his full name, address and telephone number, is a littl'un called Percival.
4. Whilst on the island, did Jack ever personally kill anything but pigs?

Answer: No

Although Jack by the end of the novel is portrayed as evil, he does not actually kill anything but pigs, which are necessary as food. Although he can be held as responsible for the death of Piggy, he actually didn't drop the boulder that killed Piggy, this was Roger. It is argued that Jack was guilty by association, as he lead through fear and manipulation, and his strive to be autarkic.
5. Compared with Ralph, Jack seems the more capable leader, but does he win the vote to become leader of the boys?

Answer: No

Jack and Ralph both are put forward to become leader of the boys, with Jack's election campaign consisting mainly of "I ought to be chief, because I'm Chapter Chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp!"
After the vote, Ralph decides to let Jack be in charge of the Choir and also of getting food so they do share power, but with Ralph still as sole leader.
6. What does Jack do symbolically to solve the problem of the "Beast?"

Answer: Leaves the head of a kill to placate the "Beast"

Jack does nothing to actually remove the "Beast" from the island, but he places the head of his kill as a gift to it, in the hope that it leave him and his tribe alone.
It is Simon who can prove that the "Beast" does not exist, after coming face to face with it when he is recovering from an epileptic fit.
7. After the death of Piggy, whose removal from the island does Jack want, to allow complete and autocratic control?

Answer: Ralph

Jack is the villain of the novel, but this does not make him unattractive to the rest of the boys. He commands loyalty through fear and manipulation; he wanted lots of rules initially. It is when these rules begin to affect Jack and his plans, that he becomes difficult. However, when in power, Jack is more effective than Ralph when it comes to getting things done.
8. What liberates Jack from "shame and self-consciousness?"

Answer: Face paint

Jack uses the face-paint to make it easier to hunt pigs, as he believes that the pigs won't see him, as he will be camouflaged. It is at this point that Jack becomes a new personality, with his mask acting as a facade, with which he can leave behind old mores, and replace them with new ones.
9. In what chapter does Jack say "I'm not going to play anymore. Not with you."

Answer: Chapter 8

In chapter 8, "Gift for Darkness" , Jack asks again for the boys to vote for a chief, and is furious when he loses again to Ralph. At this, he forms a breakaway group with some of the others, including Roger.
10. What does Jack steal from Piggy and then break?

Answer: Spectacles

When Jack has broken away from Ralph, he has no means of starting fire with which to cook food. He decides to ambush Ralph's camp, and steal the glasses. This symbolises loss of stability and loss of order, with the lines defining what is right and what is wrong, becoming more blurred.
