Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This dragon was also known as 'the Black':

Answer: Ancalagon

He shares this title with Ulfang the Easterling. He was the most evil of Dragons, hence he earned the evil surname.
2. Which dragon's teeth were made into a necklace which was given as a gift to the Dwarves?

Answer: Scatha

When the Dwarves of the Grey Mountains claimed the hoard of Scatha as their own, even though it was Fram who had slain him, Fram made Scatha's teeth into a necklace. He claimed that: "Jewels such as these you will not match in your treasuries, for they are hard to come by" (LOTR Appendix A)

This enraged the Dwarves, which started a war between them and the Éothéod, a war in which Fram was killed.
3. Which of the Dragons was known as 'the Magnificent'?

Answer: Smaug

This was a title bestowed upon Smaug by Bilbo Baggins while under the mountain of Erebor. Bilbo had sneaked into the mountain and stolen a cup. Smaug smelled him and had a short conversation with Bilbo who bestowed many titles upon him. Despite this, Bilbo almost got singed when he attempted to make off with the golden goblet.
4. Which dragon was the only one slain in the course of a war?

Answer: Ancalagon

Scatha, Smaug and Glaurung were all slain in battles that were unrelated to a greater war. Eärendil was the one who slayed Ancalagon in the midst of the War of Wrath, casting him down on the Towers of Thangorodrim and breaking them.

Scatha the Worm was killed by Fram son of Frumgar, Bard the Bowman felled Smaug the Magnificent, and Turin Turambar slew Glaurung the Golden.
5. Which of the dragons was slain by a single arrow?

Answer: Smaug

All of the weapons of Lake-Town bounced off of Smaug's magnificent armour. Bard the Bowman had one last arrow, his black arrow, his lucky arrow, and the Thrush had just revealed where Smaug's soft spot was - a bare patch on his left breast. Bard notched the arrow and let loose... and Smaug fell into the waters of Lake-Town.
6. Which Dragon was killed by the 'Black Sword'?

Answer: Glaurung

Túrin Turambar was known as the 'Black Sword', and Túrin's sword was also THE black sword, Eöl's sword Anglachel reforged as Gurthang. Túrin slayed Glaurung in the Forest of Brethil with his black sword.
7. Which dragon is known as 'The Father of Dragons'?

Answer: Glaurung

Glaurung was the first Dragon created by Morgoth in the pits of Angband, and therefore the mold on which Morgoth based all of his further creations. Since he was one of the first dragons, he was incapable of flight. Tolkien distinguishes among dragons between worms and drakes, the former who walk or crawl and the latter being capable of flying.
8. Which of the four Dragons inhabited the Grey Mountains?

Answer: Scatha

Little is known of this Dragon's life except that he made his home in the Grey Mountains. Presumably it was the same Dragon that killed Dáin I, but it is not specifically said.
9. Which Dragon sacked the city of Nargothrond?

Answer: Glaurung

The realm of Finrod Felagund was found out by Morgoth, and a force was dispatched under Glaurung to sack the city, in the year 495 of the First Age. It was an utter loss for Finrod's people, and Glaurung dwelt in the Halls of Finrod for a while.
10. Which was the only dragon to encounter a Hobbit?

Answer: Smaug

Smaug encountered Mr. Bilbo Baggins under the Lonely Mountain, but was confused by his scent, which wasn't quite Dwarvish. This made the dragon curious and he proceeded to have a short conversation with Bilbo, who impressed him with confusing words.
11. This Dragon was also known as 'the Worm'. Who was he?

Answer: Scatha

Scatha was of the race of Dragons known as the Long-Worms, as was probably Smaug. Scatha the Worm inhabited the Grey Mountains, and resembled a long snake with wings, as depicted in Tolkien's sketches.
12. Which Dragon's fire, according to Gandalf, was the hottest (but not even his fire could have harmed the One Ring)?

Answer: Ancalagon

"Nor was there any dragon, not even Ancalagon the Black, who could have harmed the One Ring" - Gandalf, FotR Bk. 1 Chap. 2

Gandalf states that all of the Great Dragons have been slain, and although Dragon-fire might have been able to consume the other Rings of Power, nothing except Orodruin can harm the One Ring.
13. Could Glaurung the Golden fly?

Answer: No

Glaurung was a wingless dragon, and his long snake-like body gave forth the other name for Dragon - 'Worm', from the Old English word 'wyrm' meaning serpent.
14. Of the four, only one Dragon was slain by an immortal, the other three by mortal Men. Who was slain by an immortal?

Answer: Ancalagon

Glaurung by Túrin son of Húrin, Scatha by Fram of the Éothéod, and Smaug by Bard descendant of Girion of Dale. Only Ancalagon was slain by Eärendil, who came out of the Heavens in Vingilot, his white hallowed ship, while bearing the Silmaril on his brow.
15. Which Dragon described himself: "My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death..."

Answer: Smaug

When Bilbo is goading Smaug into talking about himself, Smaug reveals a hole in his armour leaving Bilbo to think: "Old fool! Why there is a large patch in the hollow of his left breast as bare as a snail out of its shell" - "The Hobbit" Chap. 12
