The first stone on offer is the Deathstone, a ruby set in a gold ring. The ruby changes colour with the imminent possibility of the wearer's death. Others include a stone to find wealth and one to find true love.

Mortis, meaning death in Latin, is the titular Pale Horse although he does have several guises so that Death can reach any place that he needs to. His most common form is that of the horse, but he can become a car or boat, for example.

When, at the start of the book, Death came to take the soul of a young man who was about to shoot himself and did not speak. He just reached out to take the soul. The new Incarnation of Death spoke with his clients and tried to ease their passing.
