Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy question to start off. What is the first name of the book's main character, Ransom?

Answer: Elwin

For some time, I was under the impression that his name was Edwin. Kudos to those who were more observant than me the first time around.
2. While approaching Ransom's cottage, Lewis is besieged by doubts and fears which cause him to think he is going insane. What is the cause of this occurance?

Answer: Bent eldila

The bent eldila (fallen angels) of our world do not want Lewis to reach the cottage and Ransom. They have gotten wind of what's happening, and wish to inhibit the process in any way possible.
3. What is the name of the language Ransom learned on Mars, which he says may be called Old Solar?

Answer: Hressa-Hlab

Ransom originally thought this was the language of Mars only, but discovered it to be the language of the entire solar system.
4. When Ransom took his first drink, it was to him like meeting something for the first time. What was it?

Answer: Pleasure

He had never experienced pure, unadulterated pleasure before this moment, and it was a wonderfully new encounter.
5. On Perelandra, Ransom was surprised to discover that a certain feeling was missing in all his pleasures. What was it?

Answer: Guilt

He had landed in a new, still-perfect world, full of the joy of living, and in which pleasure need not be accompanied by guilt.
6. The first time Ransom meets the Lady of Perelandra, she is surprised and disappointed when she sees him clearly. The second time, how does she react to him?

Answer: she laughs

The lady sees what Ransom has not yet realized, namely that he is sunburned on one half of his body, and pale on the other. This later gives rise to the Lady's name for him; Piebald Man.
7. Through conversation with the Lady, Ransom realizes that peace and purity are not fixed and can be lost.

Answer: True

Ransom suddenly realizes how terrible an impact he could have on this world by introducing the psychology of ours.
8. What is Weston's response when Ransom asks him how he learned to speak Hressa-Hlab?

Answer: Guidance

This is the first outright indication that Weston is possesed by something else, though there are others that are more subtle.
9. In what one place has Maleldil forbidden the inhabitants of Perelandra to live?

Answer: the fixed land

This command is parallel to the command in the Garden of Eden, not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It would seem to be for the purpose, at least in part, of inspiring obedience purely from love, not for apparent reasons.
10. Finish this sentence: " It is not for nothing that you are ________ _____________."

Answer: named Ransom

This is spoken by Maleldil, conveying the fact that Ransom was sent to ransom the world of Perelandra, much as Maleldil Himself ransomed Tellus (Earth).
