Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of the tale, Moist von Lipwig has several jobs, running three of the four listed organisations. Which is not one of them?

Answer: Grand Trunk

The Grand Trunk, also known as the Clacks, is run by his wife Adora Belle Dearheart. Moist, on the other hand, is Postmaster General responsible for the Post Office and Master of the Royal Mint responsible for the Royal Mint, but only deputy chairman of the bank. The chairman, or more correctly chairdog, is Mr Fusspot, a non-magical, non-talking small dog.
2. Which of the following Discworld characters does not appear explicitly in the book or its footnotes?

Answer: Nanny Ogg

Death attends the passing of a dwarf who tries to sabotage one of the engines.
Lu-Tze visits Archchancellor of the Unseen University to discuss 'steam engine time'.
Professor Rincewind is mentioned in the footnotes following the wizards outing to experience the railway, where it is noted that he hid under the seat the for almost the entire time. He is also mentioned in passing concerning the flora of the Netherglades.
Nanny Ogg is not mentioned but is possibly the witch being referred to in the quote: "They fly up to the clacks towers and scrounge coffee off the lads - well at least one of them does, especially when the lads are young and the goblins aren't on shift."
3. According to the footnotes in "Raising Steam", what is the official [Discworld] collective noun for goblins?

Answer: Malignity

I suspect that this doesn't appear in any roundworld list of collective nouns, but if Sir Terry Pratchett has written that it is correct on Discworld who are we to argue. It is used to describe the numerous goblins living on the roof of the house nominally inhabited by Moist von Lipwig and Adora Bell Dearheart.
One learns a lot about Discworld goblins in this book.
4. Dick Simnel gets financial investment from Sir Harry King. But who is recommended to Dick Simnel as a lawyer he can trust?

Answer: Mr Thunderbolt (Troll)

Mr Thunderbolt is made of diamond and is unable to lie "for fear of shattering", which sounds a bit inconvenient for a lawyer. He is also the only troll "to have accreditation in the court of the Low King" [of Dwarves]. He is described as being "so straight he could be used as a crowbar".
5. The first passenger journey is from Sto Lat to Ankh-Morpork. Before the journey starts, a press conference is held. Which of the following newspapers is not noted as having a reporter present?

Answer: Big Cabbage Gazette

The reporter from the "Big Cabbage Gazette" (Grievous Johnson) appears later in the story. At the Sto Lat press conference we see a clear example of Dick Simnel not being as wet behind the ears as appears, when he responds to the questions of Hardwick from the "Pseudopolis Daily Press".
6. Dick Simnel relies on his slide rule (or sliding rule as he refers to it). He also depends on three trigonometric terms. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Secant

As far as Dick Simnel is concerned he harnesses the power of steam "...by the sine and the cosine and even the little tangent..."; he also refers to "the quadratics", but no mention is made of the secant, cosecant and cotangent.
Don't even think about the hyperbolic functions, which in Discworld might be better known as diabolic functions.
7. Harry King offers to send some of his "useful gentlemen" to protect Dick Simnel's shed back in Swine Town. Who is not one of these "good lads", as Harry describes them?

Answer: Vinny "No Ears" Ludd

Vinny Ludd is a Thieves Guild bodyguard from the novel "Thud", but he does not appear in "Raising Steam". The other three gentlemen are offered as insurance.
The incident provides another opportunity to show that Dick might be a bit naive in some ways, but not that much, as he points out that he took his fathers' advice and "put a few nasty boobytraps about the place". Harry King is suitably impressed with this attitude.
8. Which species, having seen the big railway, is building an underground railway to link its people?

Answer: Goblins

Goblins are very good at adapting, as the goblin named Of the Twilight the Darkness says: "...goblins no stranger to acclimatization. Don't acclimatize don't live." The goblins quickly learn and understand the secrets of the steam engine, then they adapt them.

Dwarves would seem to be a reasonable answer, but an essential part of this tale concerns the fundamentalist grags who consider such things as the railway, the clacks, Ankh-Morpork and being nice to other species as non-dwarvish, and for good measure they are trying to overthrow the Low King of Dwarves.

Gnomes do make a cameo appearance in the book and unsurprisingly get a job working for the railway. No Nac Mac Feegle are to be found in this book.
9. Goblins are to be found in many areas of society. The goblin Shine of the Rainbow is the goblin girlfriend of which character who occurs in many of the Discworld books?

Answer: Nobby Nobbs

Yes, it is Nobby, who is allegedly human. Adora Dearheart has been known to say that Shine of the Rainbow could do so much better. Rincewind is only mentioned in a couple of footnotes in this book, and not in connection with goblins. Anyway, wizards are not encouraged to have wives or girlfriends, as it might lead to children. As the events of "Sourcery" have shown, this is not a good idea.
Hughnon Ridcully is the chief priest of Blind Io in Ankh-Morpork, and Reg Shoe is dead, an activist for the rights of the dead and the first zombie member of the Ankh-Morpork city watch.
10. In which town along the railway is the ruin of Downsized Abbey to be found?

Answer: Zemphis

Zemphis has two attractions: a waterfall named Zemphis Falls and the ruined abbey. The abbey is now more of a bazaar, with Moist Lipwig considering it to remind him of the "Shades of Ankh-Morpork on their holidays".
The other three places are passed through by the line from Ankh-Morpork to Bonk, although no information is provided about them in this tale.
