Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many monarchs with names began with A were dropped?

Answer: Two

The names in brackets are the book they appeared in.
They were Artorollo a king of Ankh Morpork (Mort) and Ashk-ur-men-tep pharaoh of Djellibeybi (Pyramids). Djellibeybi has never encouraged originality so he was virtually identical to almost all other pharaohs.
2. Which book did Alfonz the sailor appear in?

Answer: Pyramids

He serves on a ship called the Unnamed which is basically a smuggler but also made a good revenue from any pirates who make the mistake of attacking it.
He is covered in pornographic tattoos and was very embarrassed when Ptraci, ex handmaiden of the late pharaoh Teppicymon XXVII saw him and used him as a sort of text book.
3. What is "Alls Fallow"

Answer: a date

It is supposed to be the day when witches and warlocks stay in bed. With regard to witches this is a legend - they stay in bed on the day they feel like having a lie in and no one even knows what a warlock actually is. It is not noted which book it appears in.
4. How many inanimate objects whose names began with A were dropped?

Answer: Three

They are the wand of Ajandurah (Colour of Magic), Ankhstones which are like Rhinestones but a different river (Sorcery) and the Astrolabe (Colour of Magic). The finest astrolabe is in Krull but due to the movement of the turtle it became totally out of date soon after it was made.
5. Ms. Annaple was a witch. What was she usually called?

Answer: Nanny

Most witches (and wizards) seem not to have had children so these titles are honorific. Nanny Ogg is an exception.
Granny Weatherwax is jealous of Nanny Annaple because she looks a proper crone - toothless from the age of 20 and so warty her face looks like a sock full of marbles (Equal Rites).
6. Who was a previous owner of the sword Kring?

Answer: Archimandrite of B'Ituni

Artela was not from B'Ituni. She was the mother of Teppic in Pyramids. B'Ituni is little more than a fortified oasis.
Kring (Colour of Magic) was a talking sword who talked a lot - unfortunately most of what it said was boring reminiscences. It belonged to Hrun the Barbarian but was used by Rincewind. When Rincewind was forced to fight Lio!rt dragonlord Rincewind boasted he had a magic sword (Kring) - Lio!rt said 'what a coincidence'.
7. What book did Argavasti appear in?

Answer: Small Gods.

All it says about him is that a General of the Ephebian army involved in the brief war with Omnia. Ephebe is something like ancient Greece and Omnia (until Brutha became Cenobiarch) was an oppressive expansionist theocracy.
8. What was the job of Aristocrates?

Answer: Secretary

The full entry is "Aristocrates. Secretary to the tyrant of Ephebe. The Author of Platitudes". He is mentioned in Small Gods. The tyrant is actually a head of state who is elected every five years. Before election he must prove beyond doubt that he is pure in thought, word and deed. Once elected he is assumed by everyone to be a criminal madman.
9. What country had Astrozoologists?

Answer: Krull

Krull is on the rim of the disk. The astrozoologists study the great A'tuin (the turtle the disk sits on) - in particular whether A'tuin is he or she. In the Colour of Magic they created a ship called 'The Potent Voyager' which was intended to be dropped over the edge of the disk to see what sex he or she was. However if A'tuin is like an earth turtle this approach would probably fail.
10. What does Atavarrs spell do?

Answer: Upsets your personal gravitational field.

Garharhatra of Krull used it on Rincewind. It makes the body believe gravity is at right angles to the norm. Garharhatra was guestmaster - this means he kept sacrificial victims happy up to the moment of sacrifice.
