Answer: Swordsmanship

While Gilan has a sword, swordsmanship isn't a Ranger's trait.

All the rest are a Ranger's best weapons.

2. What was so amazing about Horace's drilling with his sword? Sir Rodney picked this up.

Answer: Horace would add an extra stroke to the drill, and yet recover fast.

After five of ten minutes of watching the boys practice, Sir Rodney came down to talk to the drilling instructor, Sir Morton, who thought that Rodney was just making it up. When getting Horace to repeat the drill, he did it without adding. This was when people started to see that Horace had a very good natural way with swords. That way was to become very useful later on in life.

3. What is Old Bob's job?

Answer: Train, breed and look after the Ranger horses.

While he is an old friend of Halt's, he does train the horses. Old Bob trains all the Ranger horses, from Alberlard to Blaze. He even trained Tug.

While I'm sure that would have made him even angrier, he never did that. But the other three are correct. He came over miserable from the Battleschool and found the Ward Mates eating pies and laughing without him. Then he saw Tug and insulted the poor horse. Will, who bet he couldn't ride Tug, wouldn't let him insult his horse, had a punch up with Horace, after Tug had given him the boost.

It was Sir Rodney who sorted them out.

During a tracking lesson in the snow, Halt tries to show Will different animal tracks. But when they come across wild boar prints, that gets alarm bells ringing.

It was an old man called Salt Peter who had had a recent encounter with the wild boar. He was looking for someone to slay the boar because it had been terrorising local farms, and had killed a few dogs.

By one week after the event, stories had formed about how courageous Will had been but he never actually killed one. The thing which made him famous was that he had saved Horace, first by distracting it, then stepping in it's way so that Horace could escape.

But it was Halt who actually sent the arrow to the heart. Because of this event, Horace and Will were able to seal a new friendship between each other, "one that could only come from shared danger".

Gilan being Halt's former apprentice loved to play practical jokes on Halt, whether he liked it or not. Gilan is the kind of guy who can smile and make everyone else do so. He is now a full Ranger. His horse is called Blaze.

During the middle of the night, Gilan, Halt and Will became aware of the Kalkara. Unknowing of the information of the target, Halt pursued them. Will's job was to ride back to Castle Redmont to raise the alarm. He rode two horses, Tug and Blaze. All Gilan had to do was to find any random horse and ride over.

In the end, the Kalkara were defeated and Halt saved. Will was given a chance to go into Battleschool, but he decided to stay a Ranger. Halt was secretly very happy with his choice.
