On the other side is a pile of gold. Hint

Question 3 of 10

From the window comes the sound of singing in the sweetest voice you have ever heard. Below on the ground is an old crone, an enchantress, staring up at the window. At the edge of the woods is a prince, hidden behind a bush, completely enchanted by the sweet song coming from the window. Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? Night has fallen in the forest. In the middle of a clearing stands a cottage. Through an open window light streams out. Inside the cottage is a table laid out with all good things to eat. Around the table sits a band of robbers. Outside the window stands a donkey. On the donkey is a dog. On the dog is a cat. And topping it all is a rooster. Suddenly the donkey began braying, the dog began barking, the cat began howling and rooster began crowing. Is this what they call "a cappella"? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? Here is the royal castle. As we look in on the Great Room of the castle, here is the king sitting at the head of the table with his family gathered around eating their dinner. Servants rush in and out, barely containing their laughter. What they are laughing at is the princess with a fat frog sitting on the table beside her, sharing the food on her golden plate and the drink in her golden cup. Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? A peaceful forest setting. Suddenly the trees crash aside and a giant strides out of the woods, puffing and panting. He is carrying a huge tree on his shoulder and as he passes by you notice a little man sitting in the branches. He is wearing a belt that he stiched himself and on it is the legend "SEVEN WITH ONE BLOW". Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? Another forest setting. Another clearing with a tidy cottage in the middle of it. We see an elderly lady coming to answer the door which is being knocked on by a large wolf. Far down the path we see a young girl dressed in red skipping merrily along with a basket of goodies. In the distance you can hear the sounds of an axe-man chopping trees for firewood. Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? In a clearing in the woods stands a little cottage. (Sound familiar?) In front of the cottage there is a garden with two rosebushes, one covered with red roses, the other with white roses. In front of the cottage stands a woman watching as her two beautiful daughters walk up to the house, accompanied by a large bear. If the woods at the edge of the clearing a dwarf with a wizened face and long beard stares malevolently at them. Hint

They recall her admonition to not open the door to anyone, so when they hear a knock on the door and a voice saying that "Open the door. Mother's back and she has brought something for each of you", they can tell by the sound of the voice that it's the wolf. Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? A cottage in the woods, covered with sweets. Smoke coming from the chimney. A boy and a girl look wistfully at the cottage. All looks tranquil and serene. But behind the cottage is a pile of bones. Small bones. Child-sized bones.

Answer: Hansel and Gretel

This is a tale celebrating the triumph of children over predatory adults. In the original version, Hansel and Gretel looted the witch's house before they left, but the modern versions have been somewhat sanitized.
2. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? Across a moat is a huge royal castle with towers reaching to the sky. Night has fallen, but in one of the towers there is a light in the window. As we look within we see a peasant girl, a miller's daughter, wringing her hands in despair. At a spinning wheel sits an ugly gnome working the wheel. To one side of him is a pile of straw. On the other side is a pile of gold.

Answer: Rumpelstiltskin

What is troubling about this tale is how it all turns on deception and greed. The miller deceives the king into thinking his daughter can turn straw into gold. The greedy king proposed to marry the daughter for the gold he thinks she can provide him.

The daughter finds a way to trick Rumpelstiltskin into working for her, then cheating him out of the payment she has promised him. The only truly honest character in the story is Rumpelstiltskin.
3. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? In a clearing in the forest is a tall tower with no door - nothing but a single window high up in the tower. From the window comes the sound of singing in the sweetest voice you have ever heard. Below on the ground is an old crone, an enchantress, staring up at the window. At the edge of the woods is a prince, hidden behind a bush, completely enchanted by the sweet song coming from the window.

Answer: Rapunzel

This is a popular tale that has even been adapted into a Disney movie and has even been adapted into a 1978 British movie titled "Rapunzel, Let Down Your Hair". The basic theme is a common one, protecting young maidens from young men. It is thought by some to be based on the legend of Saint Barbara, who was locked by her father in a tower.
4. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? A man stands on the banks of the sea, in a discussion with a talking flounder out in the water. Up the hill is a small, but tidy cottage with a woman in front staring intently on.

Answer: The Fisherman and his Wife

When William J. Bennet wrote his "Book of Virtues", he included a reworked version of this story to demonstrate how too much of something, even something good, can be your undoing. To me it seems to be a more an example of unrestrained greed and someone not knowing when enough is enough.

Answer: The Bremen Town Musicians

In a way this story is a little like "The Wizard of Oz". Instead of Dorothy picking up three other characters, each with his own problem, on her journey to see the wizard, we have a donkey picking up three other characters on his journey to travel to Bremen to be a musician. In the end, each group finds what they were looking for by cooperating with each other.

Answer: The Frog King, or Iron Heinrich

The moral of this tale is that once you make a promise, you must keep it. Even if it is to a frog. The princess had promised the frog that she would allow it to be her companion and share her food and drink if he retrieved her ball from the pond. Once she had the ball, she attempted to dismiss the frog, but the king forced her to keep her promise.

In the end, of course, the frog turns into a prince, they get married and live happily ever after.

Answer: The Brave Little Tailor

Folklore around the world celebrates the trickster, and the more naïve the hero is, the more successful he seems to be. This is certainly true of the brave little tailor who stitches himself a belt celebrating his killing of seven flies with one swat.

But when he runs into a giant, the giant thinks he has killed seven men with one blow. What follows is a series of contests between the tailor and the giant, with the tailor outwitting the giant at every turn through trickery and deceit.

Answer: Little Red Riding Hood

Like the story of Hansel and Gretel, we have a young, innocent child pitted against a monster. This time it is a wolf. There were actually several versions of this story, but the more graphic ones were rejected by the Grimms in the interest of propriety.

Answer: Snow White and Rose Red

The unusual aspect of this story, at least for a Grimm tale, is that you have two same-sex sisters who get along well with each other. Contrast this with Cinderella and her evil step-sisters. There may even be some sort of correlation between these two sisters and the Grimm brothers.
10. Which Grimm fairy tale does this setting describe? A number of young kids are alone in a house as their mother sets out to the woods to forage. They recall her admonition to not open the door to anyone, so when they hear a knock on the door and a voice saying that "Open the door. Mother's back and she has brought something for each of you", they can tell by the sound of the voice that it's the wolf.

Answer: The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats

The original version of this had six of the seven kids being eaten by the wolf, but there was no rescue by mother. The Grimmm brothers elected to use an ending that has the children being rescued and reunited with their mother.
