Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the letter that Barliman Butterbur gives Frodo at Bree, Gandalf has included eight lines of verse that apply to Aragorn. However, Gandalf did not compose them. Who did?

Answer: Bilbo

The last 4 lines are quoted in the movie version of "Return of the King" as Arwen prepares Narsil to be reforged.
2. Who hears these words, and where? "Cold be hand and heart and bone, and cold be sleep under stone: never more to wake on stony bed, never, till the sun fails and the moon is dead."

Answer: Frodo, in the barrow

The barrow wight gives this incantation in "The Fellowship of the Ring". Its power is contradicted by another song - the rhyme Frodo uses to call Tom Bombadil.
3. On the way to Rivendell, Aragorn sings the story of Tinuviel. What is this song's real name?

Answer: The Lay of Leithian

Tolkien actually wrote about half of this story in very structured verse; it may be found in "The History of Middle Earth" series edited by Christopher Tolkien. Full prose versions are found in "The Silmarillion" and "The Book of Lost Tales 1".
4. What language is Galadriel's song of farewell written in?

Answer: Quenya

Tolkien created several languages for Middle Earth, including numerous tongues and dialects of the Elves. Quenya is the High-Elven tongue. This song is called "Namarie", which means "Farewell."
5. At the house of Elrond, Bilbo's song about Earendil is performed. What is the name of Tolkien's earlier song upon which this one was based?

Answer: Errantry

"Errantry" is much more whimsical than Bilbo's song. It is found in "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil".
6. In "The Two Towers", whom does Treebeard lament in his song about bygone days?

Answer: Entwives

The male Ents loved wild trees, but their Entwives were drawn to gardens and cultivation. Eventually, the Entwives left Fangorn Forest forever.
7. Throughout the trilogy, the name of Elbereth has power over forces of darkness, including both the Witch King and Shelob. Elbereth Gilthoniel is also mentioned in several songs. Who is she?

Answer: Queen of the Valar

Varda Elentari is known as Elbereth in the Sindarin tongue. She is the wife of Manwe Sulimo, King of Arda (the world). Standing by his side on Mount Oiolosseo, she can hear every word spoken in Middle Earth.
8. This isn't really a song - just a quote - but in the movie "The Return of the King", Aragorn sings these words at his coronation: "Et earello endorenna utulien. Sinome maruan arr' hildinyar tenn ambarmetta." In the book, who is Aragorn quoting?

Answer: Elendil

Elendil spoke these words, which are in the Sindarin tongue, when he came from Numenor to the shores of Middle Earth.
9. In the tower of Cirith Ungol, Sam sings a beautiful song. What emotion inspired the song, according to Tolkien?

Answer: defiance

In the next chapter, "The Land of Shadow," Tolkien writes, "For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach. His song in the Tower had been defiance rather than hope; for then he was thinking of himself."
10. Towards the end of "The Return of the King", the people of Gondor sing songs in praise of the "pheriannath". What are "pheriannath"?

Answer: hobbits

This is a Sindarin word. Gondor was founded by men of Numenor, who used the Elven tongues often, especially in names of people (like Elessar), places (like Minas Tirith), and things (like the plant athelas).
