Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I ruled for one year before Aegon IV, although I stewarded the disastrous reigns of my nephews, Daeron and Baelor. Who am I?

Answer: Viserys II

Aegon III was the brother of Viserys II, and ruled before Viserys' nephews Daeron and Baelor. Aerys I was a grandson of Aegon IV, coming quite a bit after Viserys. Aerion, who was never a king, was the second son of Maekar, called alternately "Brightflame" and "The Monstrous".
2. Which of these people was never king?

Answer: Duncan I 'The Small'

Aenys was the first son of Aegon the Dragon, and the second King of the Seven Kingdoms. Aerys II, the famous 'Mad King,' was the last Targaryen to sit the Iron Throne. Aegon V is of course most famous as the eponymous 'Egg' in 'The Tales of Dunk and Egg'. Duncan 'The Small' was the eldest son of Aegon V, but he gave up his claim on the throne to marry a commoner, Jenny of Oldstones, and then perished in the Tragedy at Summerhall.
3. If Viserys (second son of Mad King Aerys II) had sat the Iron Throne, he would have reigned with what title?

Answer: Viserys III

There were two kings named Viserys before the start of the books: Viserys I, father of Rhaenyra and Aegon II, who may arguably be to blame for the Dance of the Dragons, and Viserys II, who ruled for only a year in name, but far longer than that in truth. There is no Geoff (although there should be).
4. Which king accidentally killed his own beloved brother in a trial by combat?

Answer: Maekar

Maekar famously brained his brother, Baelor Breakspear, in a trial of the seven, as depicted in 'The Hedge Knight'. Aegon I was the conqueror, and had no true-born brothers. Baelor 'The Blessed' probably never hurt so much as a fly, and Jaehaerys 'The Conciliator' is perhaps the greatest Targaryen King
5. Which of these kings ruled for over fifty years?

Answer: Jaehaerys I

Aegon III and Daeron II both had relatively lengthy reigns - 26 and 25 years respectively. But Jaehaerys I ruled the longest, from 48-103 AC. Rhaegar, of course, never became king, as he was killed on the Trident by Robert Baratheon.
6. Which king is paraphrased here by Ser Barristan Selmy as having said that "madness and greatness were two sides of the same coin. Every time a new Targaryen is born, he said, the gods toss the coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see how it will land." ("A Dance with Dragons")

Answer: Jaehaerys II

These are of course the three kings for whom Selmy served in the Kingsguard, and the four kings in whose reigns he lived. It was the oft-forgotten Jaehaerys, whose reign was just three years, who uttered this memorable quote.
7. Which king claimed to have slept with over nine hundred women?

Answer: Aegon IV

Baelor I of course never slept with any women, and Aegon II and Viserys I were not notably promiscuous.
8. Which king fought his sister Rhaenyra in the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons?

Answer: Aegon II

Aegon won the war, but suffered horrible burns and lost the use of his legs, and died just six months after the war ended. Upon his death, the throne defaulted to Rhaenyra's eldest son, Aegon III.
9. Which king earned the epithet 'the Cruel' for, among other things, his harsh treatment of the members of the Faith Militant who rebelled against Targaryen power?

Answer: Maegor

Maekor and Maeger were never kings. Maekar was the father of Aegon V and the fourth son of Daeron II.
10. Which king launched a successful invasion of Dorne at the age of 14?

Answer: Daeron I

Daeron I 'The Young Dragon' conquered Dorne, though he lost it in a massive uprising just a summer later. Daemon I 'Blackfyre' was, of course, one of Aegon IV's Great Bastards, and the man around whom the First Blackfyre Rebellion rallied.
