"The Chemist" by Stephenie Meyer Quiz

I hope you like my quiz based on Stephenie Meyer's "The Chemist". Note: the main character went by many different names in the story, but for the purpose of this quiz-and because it's the name she used most often-I'll be using Alex.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What could Alex not sleep without every night?

Answer: A gas mask

Alex was incredibly paranoid. And it was for a reason, because her former employer kept sending assassins to kill her. So each night she set up a trap for anyone who may cause her harm. Instead of sleeping in her bed, she slept in her tub. Alex created a system that went off if anyone disturbed the bed she was supposed to be sleeping in: when it happened, gas would be released and would kill the attacker; that's what the gas mask was for. Alex eventually got used to not sleeping with one, and she was surprised by that.
2. Which of the following was something Alex did NOT wear for protection?

Answer: A necklace

Around her waist, Alex wore a belt that hid small syringes. The rings she carried had small barbs, and when the barbs touched a person, poison was released, killing them. Her earrings broke if she was pushed or attacked-they exploded, releasing a gas. Should she be attacked, she could hold her breath, but her attacker wouldn't know to do that.

The large necklace she wore was merely a red herring, meant to make people focus on it and not the truly deadly things on her person. Alex also owned special shoes with blades inside of them.
3. Why was Alex so confident Daniel was guilty?

Answer: She had pictures of him

Carston, one of Alex's old bosses, convinced her that a great threat to the country needed to be neutralized. He told her "the agency" was no longer trying to eliminate her and that she as the only one who could help her country. His case was so convincing, and, after Alex went through great lengths to make sure she wasn't being followed, she took the job.

The files from Carston showed Daniel in Mexico meeting with a rotten drug lord. He was a hard-looking man. When she met Daniel, Alex found it hard to believe it was the same person.
4. Kevin came alone to save Daniel from Alex.

Answer: False

Kevin brought a secret weapon with him: his beloved dog, Einstein. The name fit because he followed every command given to him. Kevin arrived at the barn equipped with weaponry and wore a suit that protected him. Einstein was so powerful he was able to break down the door to a room Alex had placed him in.

When Kevin woke up from the gas Alex had released, he demanded to know if Einstein was okay.
5. What was the name the Kevin had given Alex?

Answer: Oleander

Kevin told Alex that the Agency talked about a woman who had "never had a miss" and was supposedly very deadly-The Oleander. Alex was disgusted that she was nicknamed after a flower. She thought it was too passive of a name and had nothing to do with poison. Kevin admitted he assumed the Oleander would be some gorgeous, tall, powerful woman, and not the short Alex.
6. When the group went to Kevin's hideaway, one of the dogs took a special liking to Alex. Which one?

Answer: Lola

Arnie ran Kevin's farm for dogs and each one was strong, powerful, and would one day become protective guard dogs. When Alex first saw Lola, she noted that the dog looked like the dog whose leg got broken in the movie "Lady and the Tramp". Lola let Alex pet her and gave her a kiss on her hand, which Alex thought was "disgusting, but also kind of sweet".

She never really liked dogs before. Einstein eventually warmed up to Alex and vice versa.
7. Kevin left, but he gave Daniel a saying to tell to Einstein if things went bad. What was the phrase?

Answer: Escape protocol

Before Kevin left, he pulled Einstein, Gunther, and Khan to his brother and explained to them that Daniel was now their "honey" and that they needed to protect their "honey". He also slipped Daniel a slip of paper with the words "escape protocol" written on it just in case.

When the farm was attacked, Daniel whispered "Escape protocol" and Einstein lived up to his name. He made Alex and Daniel follow him to a route that led to their safety, even to a river and into a boat that carried them away from the house.
8. What did Alex do in order to free Kevin?

Answer: She kidnapped a child

Desperate times called for desperate measures. When Alex got a phone call but didn't hear Kevin talk, she knew they had been found and that he could be dead. She devised a plan-quickly because she figured Kevin was being tortured for information. She listened to Carston's phone recordings and realized his granddaughter would be at a local zoo.

It was there that she cleverly stole the little girl away. She kept the child comfortable and never harmed her.
9. What did Alex give Kevin when she was supposed to be torturing him?

Answer: A potion called Survive

Alex tricked the enemy into letting her interrogate Kevin, who was hard to break. She inserted an IV and injected a mixture she had created called "Survive". It was a chemical that gave a person energy and pretty much took away all of their pain. Kevin had already been tortured, and his skin was broken and bruised, acid poured all over him and his feet raw.

When she gave it to him, he screamed and his interrogators gasped in shock upon seeing the tough man finally break. But it was all a façade; Alex had already given him a key to his shackles and soon he was free from the table-and his pain.
10. Who had the last perspective of the story?

Answer: A new character

Adam Kopecky-a new character never mentioned in the story-was in charge of arranging dates with up-and-coming restaurants for a TV show called "The Great American Food Trip". When he called a restaurant (appropriately named "Hideaway") we got to learn that Daniel had his own restaurant, Kevin was a bouncer, and Alex was now married. Of course, everyone had new names at that point. Adam even heard dogs barking in the background.

It was a happy ending for everyone.
