Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Instead of cell/mobile phones, people in "The Expanse" used what?

Answer: Hand terminals

A hand terminal is the same as a modern smartphone, but with a more appropriate name. People use them as small computers more frequently than as communications devices.
2. When passing through the ring gates, sometimes a ship would not come out the other side. What was this phenomenon called?

Answer: Going Dutchman

Naomi Nagata figured out that the ring gates would make ships disappear if there was too much energy in the system. Ships moving faster or with more mass had more energy. If a threshold was exceeded, then the transiting ship would disappear. The system needed time to "cool down" between transits. The Transport Union was set up to regulate traffic through Ring Space.
3. One ship had three different roles with three different names. Which of the following was NOT a name/role for that ship?

Answer: People's Home (void city)

The Nauvoo was commissioned by the Mormons to be a generation ship that would take them, hopefully, to a new habitable planet. Fred Johnson was finishing the ship at Tycho Station in "Leviathan Wakes" (book 1), and commandeered it to ram into Eros to save the Earth from protomolecule infection. The Mormons were not happy.

Eros dodged the Nauvoo, which meant the generation ship was hurtling out of the solar system at full speed. Tycho Station built the Chesapeake to chase it down and bring it back in "Caliban's War" (book 2). When they got it back, they claimed it as salvage and reworked it into the Outer Planet Aliance's only battleship, renamed "Behemoth," in "Abaddon's Gate" (book 3).

After the events of "Abaddon's Gate," the Behemoth became a permanent fixture in Ring Space, getting renamed again. "Medina Station" was named after the city on the Arabian peninsula. Alex thought it was a good name, saying it was, "A safe place where people gather." It also controlled all traffic through the new choke point.

The void cities were a series of ships built in the thirty years between "Babylon's Ashes" and "Persepolis Rising" (books 6 and 7). People's Home was the first one. Medina Station had maintained its place in Ring Space.
4. Where did Winston Duarte and his fellow Laconians come from before creating their own empire?

Answer: Mars

Mars was the most militaristic faction in the solar system, with the most advanced technology and weapons. Winston Duarte managed to convince about a fifth of the Martian military to, in secret, take their ships and run to a new colony to set up a new society because Mars was not martial enough for them. Duarte enabled Marco Inaros' devastating war to cover his defection.
5. In "Tiamat's Wrath" (book 8), Naomi Nagata met Chava Lombaugh on Auberon's lunar station. Where had Naomi met Chava before?

Answer: Chava had crewed the Rocinante in "Babylon's Ashes" (book 6)

Chava Lombaugh was a replacement pilot for the Rocinante in "Nemesis Games" and "Babylon's Ashes" (books 5 and 6). Naomi flew a couple missions with Chava in "Babylon's Ashes," but did not really interact with her. Chava was not surprised that Naomi did not recognize her more than thirty years later.
6. Colonel Aliana Tanaka was a viewpoint character in "Leviathan Falls" (book 9). Where had she shown up before?

Answer: As Governor Singh's chief of security in "Persepolis Rising" (book 7)

Tanaka was Singh's first chief of security. He dismissed her when he felt she was insufficiently respectful and not taking the situation seriously. Singh was self-aware enough to acknowledge his mistake when Admiral Trejo pointed it out. Singh apologized to Tanaka, but he couldn't undo the dismissal.
7. Detective Miller started "Leviathan Wakes" (book 1) with a partner from Earth, Dimitri Havelock. Where did Havelock show up again?

Answer: Working for Royal Charter Energy in "Cibola Burn" (book 4)

Havelock exited "Leviathan Wakes" by taking a new job. He showed up in "Cibola Burn" as a viewpoint character. Havelock was fundamentally a good man, but he tended to adopt the traits of his managers/superiors. During the Ilus incident, adopting Murtry's uncompromising personality prevented him from helping the situation. With Naomi's help, he changed his mind.
8. Erich was a childhood acquaintance of Amos who was running a Baltimore gang when Earth was hit by asteroids in "Nemesis Games" (book 5). Where did Erich rebuild his gang?

Answer: On the colony of Auberon in "Auberon" (book 8.5)

Erich lived his whole life in Baltimore until Marco's rocks hit Earth. He didn't know what to do on Luna. But crime was similar enough wherever humans went. He rebuilt his organization on Auberon and got a prosthetic arm to replace his original shriveled one. Agnete, a viewpoint character in "Auberon", just called him "the old man."
9. Major Overstreet was Governor Singh's chief of security in "Persepolis Rising" (book 7). Where did he show up after that?

Answer: As the chief of security for Governor Biryar Rittenaur in "Auberon" (book 8.5)

At the end of "Persepolis Rising", Overstreet had to execute his first governor, Santiago Singh, for breaking Laconian law. After that he was assigned to Governor Biryar Rittenaur. Rittenaur was placed in a position where he also had to break the law, but with the help of the local crime boss, this time it was the chief of security who died.
10. Naomi Nagata thought her son, Filip, had died at the end of the war with the Free Navy in "Babylon's Ashes" (book 6). He had actually deserted right before the final battle and started a new life. Where did Filip end up?

Answer: Jannah, a colony world

Filip was the viewpoint character of "The Sins of Our Fathers", the final novella of "The Expanse". It took place after the final book, when the ring network connecting humanity was shut down. Filip was one of less than 2000 humans on Jannah left to figure out how to survive on their own. No one from Filip's old life knew what happened to him, and no one from his new life ever found out who he had been.
