Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the book, Katniss met up with her best friend Gale Hawthorne in the woods on the morning of the Reaping. She took some food with her, and added it to what Gale had collected. As they began their meal, they both said a part of the signature line, "Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be EVER in your favor." Who is the person from the Capitol who said this line every year at the Reaping?

Answer: Effie Trinket

Effie Trinket was District 12's representative from the Capitol. Every year, Effie came to District 12 to select the tributes for The Hunger Games. At the Reaping every year, Effie opened the Reaping with her signature line, "Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be EVER in your favor." Katniss and Gale mimicked Effie's line while they enjoy their meal together before the Reaping.
2. After Primrose Everdeen's name was selected at the Reaping, Katniss volunteered to take her sister's place in the Hunger Games. After Katniss reached the stage, Haymitch staggered over to her and said, "Look at her! Look at this one! I like her! Lots of ______!" Finish Haymitch's statement.

Answer: spunk

Haymitch, drunk as usual, staggered over to Katniss and put his arm around her while he said this line. After that statement, Haymitch pointed at the cameras and said, "More than you! More than you!" It isn't exactly clear to Katniss what he meant with that statement, but she believed Haymitch was either addressing the audience of Panem, or even calling out the Capitol itself.

He was so drunk, he stumbled forward and plunged off the stage. Haymitch was always so drunk, the Capitol never took anything he said seriously, which was clearly a good thing.
3. Katniss and Peeta were taken into custody after the Reaping, and they were allowed a few brief moments to say good-bye to their loved ones. One person that came to see Katniss was a surprise to her. He told her before he left the room, "I'll keep an eye on the little girl, make sure she's eating." Who was Katniss' surprise visitor?

Answer: Peeta's father

Peeta and his family worked at the bakery in District 12. His father often bought game from Katniss, and helped her keep her mother and sister alive. He told Katniss he would keep an eye on Prim and make sure she was eating and staying as healthy as possible. Peeta's father gave Katniss a package of cookies for her trip to the Capitol. On the train ride to the Capitol however, Katniss threw them out the window after she decided to keep her distance from Peeta. Peeta's mother was considered by Katniss to be a cruel, cold-hearted witch.

She didn't care to see Katniss, although she knew Katniss would be a contender in the Games. Katniss' mother and Prim came and said good-bye to her, and she made sure they knew what to do when she was gone. Her father was killed in a mine accident several years earlier.
4. When Katniss was called forward to her interview, the first question she was asked was very simple. "So, Katniss, the Capitol must be quite a change from District 12. What has impressed you most since you arrived here?" Who asked Katniss this question and conducted the interviews for the tributes?

Answer: Caesar Flickerman

Caesar Flickerman had been a Hunger Games fixture for over 40 years. He conducted the interviews for each of the tributes, and always made the tributes feel comfortable. Caesar asked Katniss what impressed her about the Capitol, her costume for the opening ceremony, her training score, and about what it was like when she volunteered for Prim at the Reaping.
5. Katniss and the other 23 tributes were launched into the arena, and before they were allowed to move, they were required to wait one minute until they could leave their metal circles. Before that one minute began, the tributes heard the voice of Claudius Templesmith echoing through the arena. Finish his line: "Ladies and gentlemen, let the ____th annual Hunger Games begin!"

Answer: 74

Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark, and 22 other tributes are selected, prepared, and cast into the arena for the 74th annual Hunger Games. This was the final Hunger Games before the next dreaded "Quarter Quell", as described in "Catching Fire". Every 25 years designates a Quarter Quell, which is a fancy way of saying there is an extra cruel twist to the Hunger Games.

For example, the 50th Hunger Games, which were won by District 12's very own Haymitch Abernathy, required that each district offer twice the number of tributes to compete in the Games. That meant that instead of 24 tributes, there were 48 tributes, two boys and two girls from each district.
6. After being stung by tracker jackers, Katniss woke up two days later. She was stiff and sore, but alive and trying to get her strength back. While she was preparing a meal, she met Rue. Katniss said the Careers were not the only ones who could be allies. What was Rue's response?

Answer: You want me for an ally?

Rue and Katniss teamed up to survive against the Career Tributes. They knew their alliance would only be temporary since only one tribute could win, but they knew their chances for survival were greater as a team. Eventually, Rue fell at the hands of Marvel, the boy from District One. Katniss avenged Rue's death by taking out Marvel seconds after Rue fell.
7. After Rue was lost to the Careers, the Gamemakers changed the rules to allow two tributes to win, if they both came from the same district. With Peeta still alive, Katniss set out to find him. Along the riverbank, Katniss heard Peeta's ragged voice call her. What did he say?

Answer: You here to finish me off sweetheart?

Peeta used this line to get Katniss' attention before she stepped on him. The term "sweetheart" came from Haymitch earlier in the book. The phrase was used between the team several times after that. Katniss helped Peeta recover from his injuries and the two found shelter.
8. Peeta protected Katniss from Cato during the tracker jacker attack. However, he took a sword in the thigh that cut straight to the bone. As Katniss dug him out of the mud and back to health, she noticed the streaks running up Peeta's leg. Finish Peeta's comment: "I know what blood poisoning is, Katniss, even if my mother isn't a ________."

Answer: Healer

Peeta knew that blood poisoning would kill him if it wasn't stopped. He didn't want Katniss to risk going to the feast for the medicine to heal him. His full intention was to protect Katniss every step of the way because he truly loved her.
9. Katniss tricked Peeta and knocked him unconscious so she could go the Cornucopia to get the medicine he needed. She was caught by Clove and was about to be dissected, but she was saved by another tribute whose last line to Katniss was "You better run now, Fire Girl." Who was this tribute?

Answer: Thresh

Glimmer was killed in the tracker jacker attack, and Foxface had grabbed her backpack and fled before anyone could react. If Cato had caught Katniss, he wouldn't have let her get away. Thresh let Katniss go to repay the debt that he and all of District 11 felt they had when Katniss teamed up with Rue.
10. Katniss and Peeta both survived the Hunger Games after threatening to kill themselves at the end. Haymitch and Katniss worked on the "romance" plan to keep her and Peeta alive. When Peeta found out, he turned his back on Katniss. When they reached home, his last comment to Katniss was hollow, not angry. What was it?

Answer: One more time, for the audience?

Katniss said that Peeta's comment being hollow was worse than being angry. Katniss did not know what her feelings for her friend Gale were, and did not want to commit any feelings to Peeta. But she knew she did have feelings for him, which showed later in the series.
