Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which survivor was seen first in the novel?

Answer: Michonne

Michonne returned to the battle site and saw Tyreese lying outside of the prison. He had been beheaded and was staring up at the sky as a zombie. She stabbed her sword into his head, ending his "life." She cried as she did so, because they had been close. Then, Michonne noticed the tracks leading from the ruined RV and decided to follow them.
2. What was physically wrong with Rick in the beginning of the story?

Answer: He had an infection

Rick had been shot in the stomach earlier and had been bedridden for a time while Alice healed him. She patched him up and tried to convince him to rest, but he refused and continued to fight. Eventually it caught up with him and he got a painful infection along his stitches. Rick sweated profusely as Carl frantically tried to figure out how to help him.
3. What did Carl tell his father after being out on the road for so long?

Answer: "I don't think I need you anymore."

Because Rick was out battling his infection, Carl was left alone to defend the house they stayed in. He panicked when he saw two zombies pawing at a window. He cleverly led them away, but not before he bumped into another zombie and was surrounded. He took his gun out and killed all three of them.

He said to his unconscious Dad "I don't think I need you anymore." Later Carl admitted that he was scared.
4. What made Carl change his mind after those words?

Answer: He thought Rick had become a zombie

Before defeating the handful of zombies that had attacked the house, Carl had dragged his dad away from the window, to protect him. At night, Carl watched over Rick as he sweated his sickness away. When Carl heard Rick grunt and raise his hand toward him, he began to cry.

He assumed that his dad had become a zombie. At first he aimed his gun, but then cried, "Just eat me." Rick was alive, however. He told Carl that he was sick, and that he should stay inside.
5. What shocked Rick while he was leaving the house with Carl?

Answer: He heard a phone ringing

He yelled at Carl to get inside the house. He ran to the phone and was shocked to hear a woman's voice on the other end. The woman, who said she had a total of fourteen people with her, explained that she had been dialing several numbers, hoping to reach someone. Both Rick and the woman were excited to speak to another person.
6. Why did Rick and Carl stay in the house they found?

Answer: They were waiting for something

Rick was waiting to hear from the woman again; she promised that she would call back. Meanwhile, they were running out of food. While hunting, they heard a man scream and witnessed a human being devoured by zombies. Carl was upset, but it turned out to be a blessing. The man had a car filled with food and weapons that the boys took over for themselves.
7. Who saved Carl from a zombie attacking him on the road?

Answer: Michonne

Rick was teaching Carl how to drive. While Rick was exploring an abandoned truck, a zombie quietly made its way to the car. The zombie was almost in the car when Michonne stabbed her sword right through its head. Carl, who didn't have a weapon on hand, leapt out of the car and hugged Michonne. When she asked if she could join them on the road, Rick said, "You don't even need to ask."
8. Who did Rick speak to during most of the story?

Answer: Lori

The woman on the phone was actually Lori. Rick simply pretended she was speaking to him; he loved hearing her voice. When he left the house with Carl, he insisted on bringing it with him. He hated the thought of never hearing her voice again. Michonne admitted to him that the person she always spoke to was her dead ex-boyfriend.

She asked Rick if he thought she was crazy, and he admitted that he was essentially doing the same thing.
9. Who was NOT introduced in this story?

Answer: Sophia

Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita met Rick and the others at Hershel's farm. They explained that they were traveling to Washington, D.C to try and stop the zombie virus. Abraham wanted the others to join them, because there was strength in numbers. Eugene, a scientist, said that he might have the answer to stop the zombies for good.
10. Who did Abraham call "Little Miss Death Threat?"

Answer: Andrea

Andrea alerted the others that they had company. From the roof of Hershel's home, she kept her sniper rifle aimed at the new arrivals. She demanded that they drop their weapons; the experience with the people from Woodbury had left her- and most of the survivors- paranoid. Abraham knocked her in the face and called her "Little Miss Death Threat."
