1. In "The Lord Of The Rings", what does Gandalf tell the Balrog he is a servant of?

Answer: The secret fire

The contest between Gandalf and the Balrog was a great one because both were originally Maia. This scene looks great in the film version. In the 2001 film Gandalf is played by Ian McKellan.

2. What is Radagast's colour?

Answer: Brown

Gandalf is the grey and later the white, following his battle with the Balrog. Saruman is the white prior to his shaming. Saruman is eventually killed by Grima.

3. On whose horse does Frodo cross the Fords of Rivendell in the book?

Answer: Glorfindel's

In the animated film it is Legolas's. In the 2001 film it is Arwen's. Arwen has a much bigger role in the film than in the book- I think this was to introduce a love story into it. I do not really agree with the changing of Tolkein's work in this way.

4. What is Feanor's birth name?

Answer: Curufinwe

Feanor is Finwe's eldest son and has a different mother from Fingolfin and Finarfin. The house of Finwe are put under a curse because of the kinslaying at Alqualonde.

5. What does Grima throw from the window of Orthanc?

Answer: A Palantir

This reveals to Gandalf how Saruman was corrupted because Sauron can use the Palantirs to sway people's minds. The Palantirs are used like crystal balls for seeing what is happening elsewhere in Middle Earth.

6. Huan features in whose lay?

Answer: Beren and Luthien

The names of Beren and Luthien are on the gravestones of Tolkein and his wife. The story of Beren and Luthien is a masterpiece in itself and can be found in "The Silmarillion".

7. What is Fredegar Bolger's nickname?

Answer: Fatty

He was a minor character in "The Lord Of The Rings." He looks after Frodo's house in Crickhollow while he is away. It is unclear why he is called Fatty; we are not told much about him.

8. Who is the Steward of Gondor at the start of "LOTR"?

Answer: Denethor

He eventually goes mad and burns himself to death- another victim of a Palantir. Boromir was his heir until he was killed. Faramir becomes his heir, and Aragorn is the rightful heir to the throne of Gondor. When Denethor tries to kill himself, he also tries to take the unconscious Faramir with him.

9. What relation is Faramir to Boromir?

Answer: Younger brother

They are qute different. Faramir resists the temptation of the ring; Boromir cannot. Boromir dies as a result of this, but Faramir survives.

10. What does Tinuviel translate to in the Common Tongue?

Answer: Nightingale

This is because of the way she sings. Stormcrow is what Grima calls Gandalf. Tharkun, Mithrandir, and Olorin are also names for Gandalf.
