Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In both books, the Wicked Witch of the West has familiars. Which group is not under her control in "The Wizard of Oz", but is in "Wicked"?

Answer: the winged monkeys

This is one thing Maguire took almost completely from Baum's work. The major change was that the winged monkeys were independent, but cursed to obey the Golden Cap in "The Wizard of Oz", whereas in "Wicked", they were created by Elphaba.
2. Which answer shows the correct order in which the Wicked Witch of the West sent her familiars to stop Dorothy and her friends?

Answer: wolves, crows, bees, winged monkeys

Maguire makes all the familiars animals the Witch cares about, whereas Baum indicates they are her slaves, and that she makes slaves of all who trespass on her lands.
3. Which familiar is Elphaba's first?

Answer: bees

In "Wicked", all the familiars are "collected" on the way to Kiamo Ko, beginning with the bees, then the dog, the crows, and lastly, the monkey. In "The Wizard of Oz", all the "familiars" are actually wild animals called to the Witch magically, using her silver whistle, but she refers to them as "her wolves", "her crows", and "her bees", possessively, much as does Elphaba.
4. The Witch in "Wicked" has the same physical "deformity" portrayed in the movie; she has green skin. In "The Wizard of Oz", however, she has a strikingly different deformity. What is it?

Answer: She has only one eye.

Many people are completely unaware that Baum's Witch has only one eye. This is not described in much detail, and only mentioned twice. There is no indication of her having lost an eye, and so having only one left. In fact, the eye she has is super-powered, "as powerful as a telescope", which would seem to point to her only ever having had one. Elphaba actually creates a telescope for herself, as she needs it!
5. In both stories, Dorothy and her friends are saved twice by one member of the party. Who is it?

Answer: the Tin Man

The Tin Man (or Nick Chopper) cuts off the heads of the Wolves to save them first, and then later remains the only one accessible for the Bees to sting, thereby killing them as they "broke off their stings" and died. The Scarecrow wrung the Crows' necks, and no one defeated the Monkeys in either book.
6. Maguire's Witch changes her mind several times about injuring Dorothy, whereas Baum prevents her from even considering this by having Glinda place a warning mark on her forehead. Which two familiars are not ordered by Elphaba to injure Dorothy?

Answer: wolves and winged monkeys

The wolves are sent by Elphaba as a welcoming party, meant to guide the "guests" to the castle. She apparently underestimated the fear factor of a pack of wolves and/or dogs rushing towards the group from the Wicked Witch's castle. Crows are ordered to peck their eyes out, the bees to sting them, and the monkeys are to bring only Dorothy and the Lion.
7. Maguire, Baum and the screenwriters for the movie had very different ideas about the motivations and qualities of the characters in the story. They all portrayed one character, however, in an amazingly uniform way. Which character is this?

Answer: Dorothy

Dorothy is drawn throughout all three as honest, sensible, sweet, charming and good-hearted, with good manners to boot! She accidentally kills the Witch in all three, and only becomes righteously angry, and that rarely. Glinda is actually the Witch of the South, according to Baum, and the Witch of the North is short, rotund and old.

The Wizard is weak in all, but to the point of being evil in "Wicked". The Witch of the East is nearly anonymous but for Maguire, who makes her real.
8. In "The Wizard of Oz", how is Dorothy's encounter with the Witch portrayed?

Answer: She is kept as a slave for days.

The Witch makes Dorothy work cleaning and tending the fire. She attempts to starve the Lion into agreeing to be harnessed like a horse, but Dorothy feeds him at night. She hits Toto with her umbrella (which she always carries), and he bites her on the leg, an incident changed to Miss Gulch in the movie.

She wants the silver shoes badly, and finally trips Dorothy with an invisible bar, and snatches one shoe that comes off. Her refusal to return it to Dorothy angers the girl, who drenches her with a bucket of water.
9. There are many differences between the two books, but there are also similarities. Which of the following does not appear in both books?

Answer: the China country

The China country is encountered on the way to Glinda, Witch of the South, in Quadling country. It is surrounded by high walls, with a giant spider-terrorized forest on the other side. Beyond that is a hill guarded by the Hammer-Heads, armless beings with shooting heads.

Interesting to note is that Elphaba's sister, Nessarose, is implied to be the daughter of the Quadling Turtle Heart, and is born armless.
10. There are many animals in both books, and in "Wicked" there are both Animals and animals. One creature, however, is seemingly unknown in Baum's Oz, but not so uncommon in Maguire's. Which is it of the following?

Answer: dog

Baum's Toto is an oddity everywhere, sometimes feared, sometimes befriended. Elphaba, however, has her own pet dog, Killjoy, which she "inherits" from a cook. Tigers, crows and monkeys appear in both books.
