Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Australian film featured a pig that enjoyed singing Christmas carols?

Answer: Babe

"Babe" (2002) - A cute little pig named Babe is adopted by a sheepdog who had to watch all of her puppies get sold. Babe then learns how to herd sheep at an award winning level.
This film is so cute. It was a huge success, not only in Australia but all over the world.
Of the others, only "Shine" is Australian, and it's about a pianist who failed due to mental illness and gained fame later in life. As far as I know, there aren't any pigs in it.
2. In which Australian film were the lines, "Tell 'im he's dreamin'" and "How's the serenity?" spoken by Darryl Kerrigan to members of his family?

Answer: The Castle

"The Castle" (1997) - The story of Darryl Kerrigan, the everyday family man who takes on a major airport in order to stop his house from being demolished. He says the lines on multiple occasions throughout the film. Darryls son-in-law, Con, is played by "Troy" star Eric Bana.
I absolutely adore this film. It's sweet, it's hilarious, and it's about the battle of the underdog. Worth noting is the fact that this film needed to be dubbed over for its international release.
3. "Dark City", starring Keifer Sutherland and Jennifer Connelly was Australian made.

Answer: True

"Dark City" was made in 1998 by Mystery Clock Cinema, Australia. It's the story of a man who discovers that his world is being controlled and changed by a group of beings called Strangers.
This film was ground-breaking for the Australian Film Industry. It won numerous awards, including the Academy of Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Film (U.S.A) Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film.
4. Australian actor Eric Bana is gaining international recognition through films like "The Hulk" and "Troy". Which Australian film caused him to be noticed by the international market in the first place?

Answer: Chopper

"Chopper" (2000) - The biographical story of Mark "Chopper" Read, one of Australia's most notorious criminals. The film tells the story of his crimes, from his attempt to kidnap a judge, to the publishing of his book.
This film is still considered to be Eric Bana's best performance. It's intriguing, funny, disturbing, and ultimately very impressive. It's because of this film that Bana was asked to do "Black Hawk Down".
5. This film featured two more Australian actors who have gained international fame. It's the story of a blind man who takes photographs of situations and asks people to describe them to him.

Answer: Proof

"Proof" (1991) - This film stars Hugo Weaving ("Lord of the Rings", "The Matrix") and Russell Crowe ("Gladiator", "A Beautiful Mind"). My favourite part of this film is when Hugo Weaving (who plays Martin, the blind man) tries to drive a car and has an accident.

Doctor: "You've been blind all your life."
Martin: "I know"
Doctor: "What were you doing driving a car?"
Martin: "I forgot."
6. This film is the ultimate ANZAC Day movie. It outlines the story of two Western Australian lads and their experiences in World War 1.

Answer: Gallipoli

"Gallipoli" (1981) - Starring a young Mel Gibson, this film illustrates the terror that was found in Gallipoli and the "lambs to the slaughter" fighting tactics that caused so many Australians to die there.
I first saw this film at school, which was really annoying because the ending is tragic and I nearly cried.
7. Which Australian film won Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel the Oscar for Best Costume Design in 1995?

Answer: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" (1994) is about two drag queens and a transsexual who are driving a bus (Priscilla) to Alice Springs (a town in the middle of the Australian outback) to perform in a cabaret show.
8. The Australian movie "Two Hands" (1999) starred which well known Australian actor?

Answer: Heath Ledger

"Two Hands" is the Australian version of a gangster film. It tells the story of Jimmy (Ledger) who accidentally loses a large sum of money that he was delivering to his boss, and his attempts to get it back. This is an absolutely brilliant film!
9. This movie was filmed in Coober Pedy, South Australia. It features a lot of Australian talent, as well as show-casing a new hot new American actor. (Hint: Afraid of the dark?)

Answer: Pitch Black

"Pitch Black" (2000) - This film stars Vin Diesel and is the story of a group of space travelers that find themselves stranded on a planet with 2 suns, just in time for a solar eclipse. Beneath the surface of the planet lurks a nasty group of aliens who only come out at night.
The barren wasteland of Coober Pedy makes it very useful for films like "Pitch Black". Other desert films, like "Mad Max", have also been shot there.
10. The relatively new film "Thunderstruck" (2004) tells the story of 5 guys who make a pact that if one of them dies, the other 4 will bury him next to Bon Scott. Which cemetery features in this film?

Answer: Fremantle Cemetery, W.A.

For those who aren't aware, Bon Scott was the lead singer of AC/DC. He was from Perth and hence was buried in Fremantle Cemetary. The movie was filmed there.
