Mary Norton was born in London but came to America in 1941 to help with the World War 2 effort. She began writing her famous series, "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" during her time in America. "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" is actually a set of three stories; "The Magic Bedknob" (1943), "Bonfires and Broomsticks" (1947), and "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1957).

This information was found in Mary Norton's biography.
2. Where and what date was this movie set in?

Answer: England in the year 1940

This is written on the screen at the beginning of the movie along with these words: Again, a time for valor. A time of whispered events. Now faded with the passing years.
