Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who or what is Baby?

Answer: a leopard

Baby was supposedly trapped by Susan's brother Mark, in Brazil, which is odd, since leopards aren't native to Brazil. Katherine Hepburn was reportedly quite comfortable around the leopard (until one day, attracted by the movement of her skirt as she turned quickly, it lunged at her). Cary Grant, on the other hand, was always uncomfortable around it, so a stunt double was used whenever his character had to interact with the leopard.
2. Cary Grant plays the role of Dr. David Huxley. Where does he work?

Answer: A museum

He works at the Stuyvesant Museum of Natural History. While talking to David on the phone, Susan tells him about her leopard and describes David as a zoologist. Apart from apparently asking her if she knows what a zoologist is, he doesn't correct her but he appears, from his work, to be a paleontologist.
3. Susan's Aunt Elizabeth is going to give something away that both Susan and David would like to have. What is it?

Answer: A million dollars

David, who finds himself stuck with Susan through a variety of mishaps, doesn't realize that she is the niece of the woman who is giving away the money, and much of the movie's comedy arises from this point. The role of Aunt Elizabeth was played by character actress Mary Robson, who appeared in over fifty films.

She has the rather unusual distinction of being the actress with the earliest birth date (April 19, 1858) to be nominated for an Oscar.
4. David has received something very important from an expedition in Utah. What is it?

Answer: The intercostal clavicle of a dinosaur

David says that the intercostal clavicle is the last bone he needs to finish assembling a brontosaurus skeleton. There are a few oddities here. The term "intercostal" is normally used to refer to muscles in the rib cage not bones and the clavicle is the collar bone.

The dinosaur skeleton shown in the movie is not that of a brontosaurus. In fact, it isn't the skeleton of any single dinosaur but is a hodgepodge of bones from various dinosaurs. There is also the fact that, before the clavicle arrives, David already has a bone in his hand that he is studying because he can't figure out where it goes in the skeleton.
5. The intercostal clavicle is later stolen. Who steals it?

Answer: George

George is played by Skippy, a wire-haired fox terrier better known for playing Asta in the "Thin Man" movies, despite the fact that, in the book, Asta is a schnauzer. Skippy had a good training pedigree. Two of his trainers, brothers Frank and Rudd Weatherwax, owned Pal, the original Lassie. Another of his trainers was Frank Inn, best known for his work with Benji.
6. In order to hide David's identity from her Aunt Elizabeth, Susan makes up a new last name for him (and neglects to tell him). What last name does she give him?

Answer: Bone

Susan develops a habit of routinely telling her Aunt various made-up things about David, without bothering to let him know - that his name is Bone, that he knows her brother Mark, that he's a big game hunter and that he's had a nervous breakdown. David's lack of knowledge of these "facts" repeatedly leads to confusion.

For example, when Aunt Elizabeth presents David to Major Applegate, she finds herself having to "remind" David what his own name is.
7. What song does Baby like?

Answer: I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby

When David first meets Baby, the leopard is locked in a bathroom. In order to show David how sweet Baby is, Susan puts on a record of the song and then, much to David's horror, opens the bathroom door to show David that Baby will go right to the record player, saying, "Now watch, David. You'll see.

He'll go right toward the music." David, doing his best to stay as far away from Baby as possible, asks, "Susan, if we put the victrola in the bathroom, will it go back in?" to which Susan airily replies, "Oh, yes, but the music sounds better out here..."
8. What is the name of David's fiancee?

Answer: Miss Swallow

The role of Miss Swallow was played by Virginia Walker. She was married to William B. Hawks, the brother of the movie's director, Howard Hawks. She only acted in a few movies before dying at the age of 30. Information about her is scarce, but she is reported to have been hospitalized before her death and to have died after a long illness.
9. The role of Major Applegate was played by an actor who appeared in many TV shows and movies including "The Parent Trap" and "The Ugly Dachshund". What is his name?

Answer: Charlie Ruggles

Major Applegate (who David once addresses to as Major Appletree) is a big game hunter and a friend of Susan's Aunt Elizabeth. Charlie Ruggles appeared in nearly 100 movies and numerous TV shows. Though he appeared in films with such stars as Charles Laughton, Bing Crosby and Shirley MacLaine, many people will know him best from his recurring role on "The Beverly Hillbillies" as Mr. Drysdale's father-in-law.
10. Susan tells the sheriff that David is really a notorious crook. What does she tell him David is known as in the underworld?

Answer: Jerry the Nipper

In the same sequence, Susan identifies herself as Swingin' Door Suzie. When Constable Slocum questions David about who his confederates are, he disgustedly names Mickey the Mouse and Donald the Duck. RKO, the studio that made "Bringing Up Baby" was, at the time, the distributor for Walt Disney.
