quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening sequence of "Cabaret" gives us a taste of the sights and sounds of the Kit Kat club (the cabaret club which is the central metaphor of the movie). What song is being performed when we first see Sally Bowles?

Answer: Wilkommen

'Wilkommen' is sung by Joel Grey in his award-winning performance as the MC. He introduces Sally along with other performers, although she is not directly involved in this number. Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) first sings for us in 'Mein Herr'. She sings 'Maybe This Time' as she is falling in love with Brian Roberts (Michael York) and 'Cabaret' is the stunning final song of the movie.
2. Sally first speaks to Brian Roberts as she shows him the available room in the boarding house where she lives. On the way, Sally points out other occupants of the house. What does she say is Fraulein Mayr's daily fortune prediction for Fraulein Kost?

Answer: You will meet a strange man.

After meeting Brian at the boarding house door and brandishing deliciously decadent green fingernails, Sally escorts him through the house. As they pass two women in a sitting room, in typically melodramatic tones Sally tells Brian: "Mayr tells Kost's fortune every morning and it's always the same: "You will meet a strange man" which under the circumstances is a pretty safe bet."
3. The movie successfully splices together vignettes from the protagonists' lives and performances from the Kit Kat Club. Many of these acts are designed to shock and titillate the audience. One example we see is women mud wrestling. Who is ejected from the club during this scene?

Answer: a young Nazi who had been soliciting funds

All four of these characters make an appearance in this scene, but only the young Nazi is evicted. At this point it seems that people are successfully resisting the strengthening tide of Nazism, but shortly after this incident, the club owner is brutally beaten by Nazis outside his club.
4. During one of the early vignettes, we watch the blossoming relationship of Sally and Brian. Sally is fantasizing about her wonderful father, then abruptly asks Brian a question to which he responds, "Once, but it wasn't a lasting relationship." What was her question?

Answer: "Have you ever slept with a dwarf?"

It seems Sally's greatest fear is being considered boring or mundane. She is constantly trying to shock those around her, but often, as here, ends up being the one who is shocked. A homosexual lover, a landlady and minor royalty will all be involved in their lives before the end of the film, but we hear no more about the dwarf.
5. Fritz and Natalia are another pair of star-crossed lovers who appear in the movie. They receive advice from Sally about their relationship. Which of her suggestions, relayed by Brian, prompts Fritz to respond, "You do what Sally says and you end up, I think, in the prison cell"?

Answer: that he should 'pounce' on Natalia

The lives of these four characters - Fritz, Natalia, Brian and Sally - become intertwined after they all meet in the boarding house. Fritz is eager to captivate the beautiful Natalia. Natalia is interested but unsure of herself. These lovers seek the counsel of Brian and Sally, though Sally appoints herself the authority on the issue.

The pineapple, which features as a gift in the stage play, is never mentioned in the movie. Serenading a bedroom window is much too tame for Sally's taste. She might have suggested a naked photograph, but her actual proposal was 'pouncing'!
6. At some moments in the movie, Sally is uncharacteristically honest in sharing her emotions. When she says, "He tries to love me, perhaps even thinks he does; but the real truth is that he just doesn't care", about whom is she talking?

Answer: her father

Sally is speaking to Brian when she says this. She is constantly fantasizing about the wonderful relationship she imagines she has with her father, and presenting this as fact to others. In reality, we find out, a business engagement was more important to him than a visit with his daughter.

In the process of revealing this truth to Brian for the first time, she really invests herself emotionally in their relationship. We then see her perform at the cabaret, singing 'Maybe This Time', a song of deep emotion which stands in stark contrast to her earlier performances.
7. Back to the cabaret - as the MC performs the song 'Money, Money', where does he place coins?

Answer: down his pants

This move gives Joel Grey a fantastic opportunity to really work his character. The song reflects the central role of financial difficulties faced by many of the characters outside of the club. Given how well it fits into the movie, it is surprising to discover that, like 'Mein Herr' and 'Maybe This Time', it was written for the movie and was not in the original Broadway production.
8. As well as entertaining the audience, the musical numbers at the Kit Kat Club provide commentary on events outside the club. To which trio is reference being made when the performers sing "Twosie beats onesie, but nothing beats threes"?

Answer: Max, Sally and Brian

The MC and two of the cabaret girls seem to have a lot of fun giving this risque performance. Sally and Brian do not have as much fun living it out as both of their hearts are broken by the scurrilous Baron von Heune (Max).
9. In the only musical number set outside of the Kit Kat Club, what is being worn by the primary singer of the song 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me'?

Answer: a Nazi uniform

This young Nazi, singing a song clearly written to mimic a traditional German folk song, makes obvious reference to tactics actually employed by the Nazis. As the song progresses and everyone joins in, we see a striking contrast to the resistance seen earlier in the film. After observing this performance, Brian turns to Max and asks, "Still think you can control them?"
10. The relationship between Brian and Sally ultimately falls apart, but Natalia finally does agree to marry Fritz. What does he tell her in order to make this possible?

Answer: that he is Jewish

During the movie we see Natalia and her family suffering as a consequence of the increasing persecution of Jews. Already suspecting that things are going to get worse for Jewish people, she is unwilling to expose Fritz to these dangers by marrying him. Both Fritz and Natalia are delighted when his secret is shared and they can finally marry.
