Question 1 of 10
1. The first Razzies were handed out in 1981, for the cinematic failures that premiered in 1980. Who was the actress who won the first Golden Raspberry for her role as Emmeline, a young girl stranded on an uninhabited island with her young cousin? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The competition (if we may name it that way) for Worst Picture of 1984 was quite impressive, it seems. The following movies all were nominated for the title of Worst Picture, and for four to seven other categories (at a time when there were only ten categories). Which movie, created by the married couple John and Bo Derek, was awarded the title of Worst Picture of 1984? Hint

Question 3 of 10

Question 4 of 10
4. There are four Oscars for acting achievements: male and female; in leading or supporting roles. Likewise for the Razzies, but the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress occasionally goes to an actor in drag. Who was the first male Worst Supporting Actress, winning the Razzie for his drag appearance on "Haunted Honeymoon" (1986)? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The Golden Raspberry for Worst Screenplay has had far more recipients than any other category. This astonishing fact is due to the movie that won the Razzie for 1994, on which no less than 32 writers drafted part of the script. Which live action movie, based upon a television cartoon series where the story is situated in the fictional town of Bedrock, won the Razzie for Worst Screenplay? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Sequels tend to get more Razzies than other movies. So do action movies (not based on true events) and absurd comedies. And (not X-rated) nudity improves the probability of a Razzie. Combining these factors, you should be able to guess who won in 2000 the Razzie for Worst Actor of the Century. Who was he? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. One would expect the nominations for Worst Director to go to those directors known for empty-headed amusement, but even some of the best directors have been nominated as Worst Director. Who was nominated for at least five movies, including "The Bonfire of the Vanities" (1990) and "Mission to Mars" (2000)? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Not only fiction movies can win Golden Raspberries, documentaries can too. "Fahrenheit 9/11" won the Golden Razzie for Worst Leading Actor, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Supporting Actress and Worst Screen Couple. Which future US Secretary of State won the Razzie for Worst Screen Couple (together with the Worst Leading Actor)? Hint

Question 9 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Razzies were handed out in 1981, for the cinematic failures that premiered in 1980. Who was the actress who won the first Golden Raspberry for her role as Emmeline, a young girl stranded on an uninhabited island with her young cousin?

Answer: Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields plays the teen girl Emmeline in "The Blue Lagoon" (1980), and Christopher Atkins plays the teen boy Richard. These kids are alone on a deserted island from when they are very young, and when they come of age they fall in love with each other.
Brooke Shields was also nominated for a Razzie for her role in "Endless Love" (1981) and in "Sahara" (1984). Christopher Atkins was nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor for his part in "The Blue Lagoon", but would later also win a Razzie (for his role in "A Night in Heaven", 1983).
Polly Walker plays the part of Mary McGregor, the love interest of Robinson Crusoe, in the 1997 movie "Robinson Crusoe" (with Pierce Brosnan in the title role).
In "The Swiss Family Robinson" (1975), Pat Delaney plays the part of Lottie, the daughter of the family.
Marie Westbrook plays the lead in the direct-to-video production "Titanic II" (2010), a movie about a ship experiencing the famous Titanic disaster once again, exactly 100 years later.

Answer: Bolero

"Bolero" starred Bo Derek as a young woman hunting down the men whom she thinks are her ideal partners, an Arabian sheik and a Spanish bullfighter. The movie won six Razzies in total; besides Worst Picture, it also took home the Razzies for Worst Leading Actress (Bo Derek), Worst Director (John Derek), Worst Screenplay (John Derek once again), Worst New Star (Olivia d'Abo) and Worst Musical Score (Peter and Elmer Bernstein). "Bolero" was also nominated for a Razzie in the category Worst Supporting Actor (George Kennedy) and Worst Supporting Actress (Olivia d'Abo, once again).
This movie was denuded (pun intended) of a real plot; the screenplay was mainly a way to have the cameraman zooming in on Bo's assets - not necessarily on her face.
"Rhinestone" tells how Dolly Parton's character moves heaven and earth to teach Sylvester Stallone to sing. It was nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay. Sly won the Razzie for Worst Leading Actor, and one of the songs by Dolly Parton was awarded the Razzie for Worst Original Song.
"Cannonball Run II", a sequel about a race across the USA without any rules, amassed seven Razzie nominations (Worst Picture, Worst Leading Actor, Worst Leading Actress, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay) but didn't win any of these.
"Sheena" is the story about a young woman having to flee some mercenaries when her foster mother is wrongfully accused. On the run she finds out talking with jungle animals can come in quite handy. This movie was nominated in the categories Worst Picture, Worst Leading Actress (Tanya Roberts), Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Musical Score, but didn't win any Razzie.
3. The Razzie ceremony of 1985 had a novelty. It declared, for the first time, a female Worst Supporting Actor. Which actress won the Worst Supporting Actor Razzie for the movie "Sahara" (1984)?

Answer: Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields plays the role of the heiress of a race pilot. In order to enter a cross-Saharan car race, she disguises herself as a man by putting on a fake moustache, which she then discards as soon as the race is on. But the sand is not the only hazard in a Sahara race. Brooke is kidnapped by a local tribe, and falls in love with one of the sheiks.
Reviews of this movie on IMDB give a mixed image. Apparently sheik Jaffar (role by Lambert Wilson) gets many praises, but the opinions on Brooke Shields are quite divergent. Obviously the critics were unanimous in their judgement. Brooke won the Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actor and was nominated the Worst Leading Actress as well, for the same role.
Barbra Streisand played a male yeshiva student in "Yentl" (1983). Julie Andrews played both title roles in the comedy "Victor, Victoria" (1982). Gwyneth Paltrow showed up as Viola de Lesseps, who impersonates Thomas Kent to be able to play a part in some of Shakespeare's masterpieces.

Answer: Dom DeLuise

Dom DeLuise (1933-2009) stars in several comedies, including "Blazing Saddles" (1974) and both "Cannonball Run" movies (1981 and 1984). In "Haunted Honeymoon", he plays the eccentric great aunt of a future bridegroom (role by Gene Wilder).
Eddie Murphy won the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actress for one of his roles in the comedy "Norbit" (2007). Kurt Russell was nominated for his drag role in "Tango and Cash" (1989). And Kevin Kline was nominated for the disguise he adopted in "Wild Wild West" (1999).

Answer: The Flintstones

"The Flintstones" (1994) is a movie starring John Goodman as Fred Flintstone and Rick Moranis as Barney Rubble. Fred is promoted to an executive job at the quarry, only because the vice-president has set up a fraudulous scheme and likes the dumbest employee to pick up the blame.
It was based upon the animated TV series by Hanna and Barbera. The script was written by Tom Parker (the only writer credited on the end titles), Al Aidekman, Cindy Begel, Ruth Bennett, Bruce Cohen, Robert Conte, Michael Dames, Lon Diamond, Michael Di Gaetano, Fred Fox Jr., Lloyd Garver, Daniel Goldin, Joshua Goldin, Richard Gurman, Jason Hoffs, Brian Levant, Babaloo Mandel, Mitch Markowitz, Ron Osborn, Jeff Reno, Leonard Ripps, Gary Ross, Dava Savel, David Silverman, Nancy Steen, Stephen Sustarcic, Neil Thompson, Michael G. Wilson and Peter Wortmann.
"Flash Gordon" (1980) did not win any Razzie. It was nominated in the category Worst Actor (Sam Jones).
"Tarzan, the Ape Man" (1981) amassed six Razzie nominations. Bo Derek won in the category Worst Actress.
"Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" (2001) got away with a single Razzie nomination, in the category Worst Leading Actress (Angelina Jolie).
Who was he?

Answer: Sylvester Stallone

Stallone was the undisputed winner. He was awarded the Razzie for Worst Actor of the Century for "99.5% of everything he has EVER done" (to quote the official announcement).
Indeed, Stallone was the leading actor in several sequels for which he was at least nominated for one Razzie: "Rambo: First Blood Part II" (1985); "Rambo III", "Rocky IV" (1985) and "Rocky V" - all of which also qualify as action movies not based on true events. Other action movies of this kind include "Cobra" (1986), "Over the Top" (1987), "Lock Up" (1989) and "Tango & Cash" (1989). In the "Rocky" movies, we could admire his bare torso.
Absurd comedies for which Stallone was nominated or won a Razzie include "Rhinestone" (1984), "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot" (1990) and "An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn" (1999).
All in all, Stallone won seven Razzies and was nominated for another 14 Razzies before his crowning achievement as Worst Actor of the Century.
And since 2000, he continued to amass nominations at the annual Razzies, for instance as Worst Director ("The Expendables", 2011) or Worst Actor ("Escape Plan" and "Grudge Match", both movies from 2013).
Although George Lucas was indeed nominated for a Razzie, he merited his nominations for his primary occupations. He was nominated in the categories Worst Director and Worst Screenplay for "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" (1999). For the sequel "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" (2002) he repeated this double bill, and even won Worst Screenplay.
Ahmed Best won the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor in 1999 as the voice of Jar Jar Binks in "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" (1999). He was also nominated Worst New Star for the same role in the same movie.
Luciano Pavarotti acted in only two movies for theatrical release. And yet he was nominated as Worst Actor for one of these, "Yes Giorgio" (1982).
7. One would expect the nominations for Worst Director to go to those directors known for empty-headed amusement, but even some of the best directors have been nominated as Worst Director. Who was nominated for at least five movies, including "The Bonfire of the Vanities" (1990) and "Mission to Mars" (2000)?

Answer: Brian de Palma

Brian de Palma (born 1940) started his career as a movie director in the sixties. He got world fame with movies such as "Dressed to Kill" (1980), "Scarface" (1983), and "Body Double" (1984). Some of his other movies were "The Bonfire of the Vanities" (1990) and "Mission to Mars" (2000). All of these earned him a nomination for Worst Director. According to ratings by some internet sites, at least the nomination for "Scarface" was quite unfair.
M. Night Shyamalan won the title of Worst Director for "Lady in the Water" (2006) and for "The Last Airbender" (2010). He was also nominated as Worst Director for "The Happening" (2008) and "After Earth" (2013). On the other hand, he was nominated for an Oscar as Best Director for "The Sixth Sense" (1999).
George Lucas was nominated as Worst Director for "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" (2000) and "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones" (2002). However, he was nominated for an Oscar as Best Director for "Star Wars IV: A New Hope" (1977) and for "American Graffiti" (1973).
Oliver Stone was also nominated as Worst Director for "U Turn" in 1997 and for "Alexander" in 2004. He won the Oscar for Best Director for "Platoon" (1986) and "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989).

Answer: Condoleezza Rice

The official description of the Razzie for Worst Screen Couple ("George W. Bush with either Condoleezza Rice or with his pet goat") does evidently NOT imply that Condoleezza Rice was George Bush's pet goat - as I misread it the first time. On the contrary, Condoleezza Rice was nominated for Worst Supporting Actress, and the pet goat wasn't.
"Fahrenheit 9/11" (2004) is a documentary by Michael Moore about the Bush administration tackling the threat of Muslim terrorism. The American President (George W. Bush), with his Secretary of State (Condoleezza Rice) and his Secretary of Defense (Donald Rumsfeld), as well as the Iraqi President (Saddam Hussein) and the main suspect of instigating the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the WTC Towers (Osama Bin Laden) are some of the numerous persons of whom archived footage was used in this documentary.
George W. Bush won the Razzie for Worst Leading Actor, and Donald Rumsfeld was crowned Worst Supporting Actor. Worst Supporting Actress was in the end Britney Spears, for archived footage of an interview she gave about the terrorist threat.
Condoleezza Rice (born 1954) was US Secretary of State, the second female US Secretary of State, who served from 2005 until 2009. During the period described in Michael Moore's documentary, she was the US National Security Advisor, while Colin Powell (born 1937) held the office of US Secretary of State. The first female US Secretary of State was Madeleine Albright (born 1937, in office 1997-2001) and the third female US Secretary of State was Hillary Clinton (born 1947, in office 2009-2013).
9. The Razzies have occasionally been handed out for special categories. For instance, the 2007 special category was Worst Excuse for a Horror Movie. Which movie, starring Lyndsay Lohan, won this special category as well as six other Razzies?

Answer: I Know Who Killed Me

"I Know Who Killed Me" starts with Aubrey Fleming, a high school student (role by Lindsay Lohan), suddenly vanishing without a trace. A few weeks later, someone looking exactly the same (second role by Lindsay) is found. She claims to be Dakota Moss and to not know anything about Aubrey. The weird part is that Aubrey once wrote a short story for a homework assignment, introducing the character of Dakota Moss, and the real girl saying she is Dakota Moss behaves quite similarly to the fictional character with the same name.
The movie includes several torture scenes.
"I Know Who Killed Me" also won the Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Lindsay Lohan, tied for both roles), Worst Screen Couple (Lindsay Lohan and Lindsay Lohan, to quote the announcement, "as the yang to her yin"), Worst Rip-off, Worst Director and Worst Screenplay.
"Herbie Fully Loaded" (2005) was a comedy starring Lindsay Lohan and a Volkswagen Beetle with its own will.
In the comedy "Freaky Friday" (2003) Lindsay Lohan plays the daughter of Jamie Lee Curtis. One Friday they miraculously swap bodies.
Lindsay also had a part in the 2013 comedy "InAPPropriate Comedy" about a tablet computer running all kinds of politically incorrect apps.
10. Only a small number of winners collect their Razzies in person. At the ceremony held in 2010, the Worst Actress of 2009 did collect her Razzie in person. Her gratification speech was hilarious - you can check it out on Youtube. Who was this actress who thanked the audience for crowning her the Worst Actress?

Answer: Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock played Mary Horowitz on "All About Steve", a female cruciverbalist who instantly falls in love with Steve, the cameraman on a television news network. When Steve turns Mary down, she starts chasing him around and confronts him in the most preposterous ways.
Sandra made quite a show at the Razzie ceremony. First of all, she thanked the critics for having watched "All About Steve" (2009) - a movie that allegedly had no audience whatsoever. But as she won by a majority out of 700 possible votes, she calculated that at least 351 or 352 critics had seen the movie. Furthermore, she wanted to hand out the DVDs and she threatened to go over several pages of the script. Finally, she proposed to return the Razzie next year and buy everyone a drink if the audience could be convinced that she was not the Worst Actress.
The other actresses have also won a Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress. Liza Minelli won one for two movies, "Rent-a-Cop" and "Arthur 2: On the Rocks", both movies from 1988. Demi Moore won in 1996 (for "The Juror" and "Striptease") and in 1997 (for "G.I. Jane"). Sharon Stone won in 1994 (for "Intersection" and "The Specialist") as well as in 2006 ("Basic Instinct 2").
