In the beginning of the movie, Mitch and Julianne got married. They left the church and headed straight for the cabin, where they would spend their honeymoon.

The carving was signed by SR and JR. Julianne later realized that SR stands for senior and JR for junior. She then knew it was Mitch and his dad who wrote it.
