Col. McNamara is a stern, but fair leader who has a hidden agenda. Some decisions he makes seem harsh, however there is a good reason for them.

Bruce Willis plays Army Col. McNamara. Willis is well known for his tough guy routine, and is indeed a very good fit for this part.

Lt. Hart is clearly not comfortable with this assignment, as he is not a lawyer. He is also ordered by Col. McNamara to have Lt. Scott lie about how he gets out of the barracks at night. He will later understand why McNamara gave this order.

Colin Farrell plays Lt. Hart. Did you know that he is an Irish actor born from Dublin, Ireland? He does a great job sounding like an American in this film. "Hart's War" is from 2002, very early in Farrell's career.

Answer: Staff Sgt. Vic Bedford

Staff Sgt. Bedford is the senior enlisted man in his barracks. He is the go-to man if a POW needs cigarettes, clothing, boots, etc. It is learned that he gets these items from the German guards in trade for information about POW activity. He is very insubordinate to officers, and seems to care only for his personal gain.

Terrence Howard plays an Army Air Corp. pilot in this film. Did you know that ten years later he would play the leader of the same fighter squadron in another World War 2 film? His second film as an aviator was "Red Tails", released in 2012.

Answer: The American plane wins. The German plane crashes into the POW camp yard.

An American P51 "Red Tail" Mustang shoots down a German Messerschmitt Bf 109, causing it to crash in the POW camp yard.

Answer: Marcel Iures

Marcel Iures is actually a veteran Romanian actor, not German, and has been in several foreign and American films. See if you can spot him the next time you watch "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", from 2007.

Answer: U. S. Army Courts-Martial manual

The German's keep a library of many U.S. Army manuals. Oberst Visser thinks the trial "should be fun, just like in your American movies".

Col. McNamara becomes enraged after Lt. Hart uses the manual to question trial procedure. He warns Hart not to ever let the Oberst Visser participate in the trial again.

Answer: They are black.

Lt. Scott and Lt. Archer are Tuskegee Airmen, members of an all-black fighter group.

A few of the white POWs openly express their displeasure that Scott and Archer are assigned to the enlisted men's barracks due to the officer's barracks being full. Lt. Archer is then framed when someone plants a weapon under his mattress and Germans find it.

Answer: Radio

The prisoners had built a radio to listen to BBC broadcasts. Once again, the Germans find contraband. Vic Bedford, it is later revealed, has been busy trading information for supplies.

With Oberst Visser watching, a German guard, smashes the radio with the butt of his rifle.

Answer: Lt. Hart

Lt. Hart confesses as a distraction in order for Col. McNamara's escape plan to work. Hart has learned about the escape plan and has seen the tunnel dug by the POWs. He shows his bravery, his honor, and his commitment to duty as he tries to sacrifice himself for the good of the men. This enrages Oberst Visser, who wants all the trial participants to be put to death by a firing squad.

Answer: Col. McNamara

Col. McNamara voluntarily returns to the camp after leading a sabotage mission following the escape. He wants Oberst Visser to kill him in trade for saving his men. Visser agrees and shoots McNamara in the head with a pistol.
