Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Elephanchine is a ballet-dancing elephant that leads all the other elephants through a ballet routine in which feature animation?

Answer: Fantasia

"Fantasia", considered by many to be one of Walt Disney's works of genius, is a feature that is a collation of eight separate stories. Each segment is set to a separate piece of classical music. The section that involves the elephants is set to Amilcare Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours" and showcases a ballet in four sections covering the hours of the morning, the afternoon, the evening and the night. Elephanchine and her troupe of elephants, who use their trunks to blow bubbles, provide the amusement that represents the evening section.

There is much amusement when one troublesome bubble lands on Elephanchine's foot and she cannot shake it off.
2. What is the name of the lead woolly mammoth in the "Ice Age" series of animated films?

Answer: Manny

The first in a series of "Ice Age" animated features was launched in 2002 and it follows the fortunes of Manfred, called Manny, the woolly mammoth, who is voiced by Ray Romano. He is joined by Diego, a smilodon (Denis Leary), a giant sloth called Sid (John Leguizamo) and the Chris Wedge voiced squirrel (he's a sabre tooth squirrel) called Scrat.

The group is is bought together by circumstance as they head south to escape the Ice Age. Manny is entrusted with the task of saving a human baby, not knowing that Diego has been given the job of killing it so that he can regain his honour amongst his tribe.
3. Who created the character Horton the Elephant, the star of the 2008 animated feature "Horton Hears A Who"?

Answer: Dr Seuss

Dr Seuss published 46 children's books during his career including "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "The Cat in the Hat". Horton, in this movie, is voiced by Jim Carrey and is a nature lover. One day as he's taking a swim in a pool a speck of dust floats by and he is convinced he heard a voice come from it.

He uncovers that the speck holds an entire universe including the city of Whoville. Whoville also features in the storyline to "How the Grinch Stole Christmas". Along with Carrey the movie also includes the wonderful talents of Steve Carrell and Seth Rogan.
4. Robert Pattinson plays the role of a veterinarian assigned to look after the animals in a travelling circus in which 2011 movie directed by Frances Lawrence?

Answer: Water For Elephants

"Water For Elephants" is based on a novel by Sara Gruen and stars Pattinson as Jacob, a Polish American veterinarian and Reese Witherspoon as his lover Marlena. Marlena also happens to be married to August, the circus owner, played by Christoph Waltz, a brutal and violent man. So long as they can perform, August cares little about the welfare of his animals and this leads to conflict between him and Jacob. Rosie, the elephant, becomes another source of frustration for August.

She is bought in as a replacement act but is proving to be extremely difficult to train.

It is then that Jacob discovers that her previous trainer was Polish and Rosie cannot understand the English commands.
5. In the 2008 animated film "Kung Fu Panda" the "Anvil of Heaven" is an army made up of one thousand elite fighting hippopotami.

Answer: False

The "Anvil of Heaven" is a squad of Javan rhinoceroses led by Commander Vachir. Their role in this film is to guard the sole prisoner of Chorh-Gom Prison, the dreaded Tai Lung who is prophesised to become the next Dragon Warrior. After 20 years Vachir becomes complacent and fails to take precautions, which leads to Tai Lung making his escape.
6. In order to keep a South Vietnamese village on-side, an army unit led by two Green Berets agree to transport an elephant to them across dangerous jungle terrain in which 1995 comedy?

Answer: Operation Dumbo Drop

Based on a true story, the film is set in 1968 during the Vietnam War and follows the attempts of Captain Sam Cahill (Danny Glover) as he tries to set up a good working relationship with the village of Dak Nhe. His goal is to have the village monitor the movements of the North Vietnamese Army.

When the NVA discover the collaboration they kill the village's elephant and Sam seeks to win back their support by delivering another to them. The film also stars Ray Liotta, Dennis Leary and features a wonderful comic performance by Doug E. Doug.
7. Gloria the hippopotamus is the "mother hen" type figure looking after a gang of escaped animals in which 2005 animated feature?

Answer: Madagascar

"Madagascar" tells the story of four animals who are residents of New York's Central Park Zoo that suddenly find themselves on a ship to South Africa and, eventually, shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. The four are Alex the lion, voiced by Ben Stiller, Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock) and, of course, Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith). Released in 2005, the film proved so successful that it has spawned a series of sequels.
8. Oliver Reed is a prisoner of war seeking to escape to Switzerland from Germany accompanied by Lucy the elephant in which 1969 movie?

Answer: Hannibal Brooks

Oliver Reed plays the title role as a POW assigned to look after Lucy at the Munich Zoo. When the zoo is bombed it's determined that the area is unsafe for the elephant and Brooks is ordered to transport her to the Innsbruck Zoo accompanied by two German soldiers and a female cook.

The film also stars Michael J Pollard as Packy (no that is not a pun), as an escaped American POW who has put together a group of partisans to fight the Germans. Directed by Michael Winner, better known for his series of "Death Wish" film collaborations with Charles Bronson, the movie was based on the true story of Olga the elephant, rescued from the Vienna Zoo in 1944.
9. The Dawn Patrol is a group of elephants led by Colonel Hathi that Mowgli tries to infiltrate in which 1967 Disney production?

Answer: The Jungle Book

"The Jungle Book", written by Rudyard Kipling, follows the adventures of Mowgli, a young orphaned human, who is rescued by Bagheera, a black panther, and raised by an Indian wolf mother. The character of Colonel Hathi, an elephant, as created by Disney, is far removed from the one written by Kipling.

In this film he is showcased as a bit of a bumbling comic who puts himself out to be more important than he is. Unfortunately for him he is regularly bought back to Earth and undermined by his sage wife, Winifred. Colonel Hathi is voiced by the talented J. Pat O'Malley and Winifred by Verna Felton. Sadly for Felton this was her last film role.

She passed away soon after, the day before Walt Disney.
10. In which South African comedy does the narrator advise us that "the rhino is the self appointed fire preservation officer"?

Answer: The Gods Must Be Crazy

Three stories collide to make one in Jamie Uys classical 1980 comedy. A Kalahari bushman seeks to rid his tribe's nemesis, an empty Coca Cola bottle, a band of rebels is being pursued by government forces and a bumbling scientist develops a romance with a school teacher who is new to the area.

The rhinoceros spots a campfire that has been lit by our intrepid biologist, Andrew Steyn, and charges in to stamp it out. Miss Thompson, the new school teacher, is in a state of semi undress in some bushes and does not see the rhino. Andrew, also in a state of semi undress, rushes in to protect her and they get entangled in a thorny shrub.

The rhino exits without being seen by Miss Thompson leaving our embarrassed biologist with some explaining to do.
