Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the Elvish word for "friend"?

Answer: Mellon

When the Fellowship arrived at the Mines of Moria, there was Elvish writing inscribed on the doors. Gandalf translated it as, "The Door of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter." Frodo realized that it was a riddle and asked Gandalf the Elvish word for "friend". "Mellon," Gandalf replied, and the massive doors opened.
2. The sign posted on the gate to Bilbo's house in the Shire read, "No admittance, except on _____ business". What was the exception?

Answer: party

Gandalf came to the Shire to visit Bilbo and wish him well on his 111th birthday. He entered the gate and when it swung closed the sign read clearly, "No admittance, except on party business". Gandalf was welcomed by Bilbo (after several knocks) and was surprised to see that he hadn't aged a bit.
3. When Gandalf surprised Bilbo with a visit, Bilbo scurried around the house looking for food to serve. Which food did Bilbo not mention?

Answer: Peach cobbler

Gandalf was bumping into the walls of the small Hobbit house (and walked right into the chandelier) as Bilbo searched his kitchen. Bilbo mentioned cold chicken, a bit of pickle, cheese, raspberry jam, apple tart, sponge cake, and eggs. Gandalf replied, "Just tea, thank you."
4. Merry and Pippin mentioned taking all of the following from Farmer Maggot's crop, except which?

Answer: Squash

As they ran through the field, away from the angry Farmer Maggot, the Hobbits said they had taken only a couple of carrots and some potatoes. Pippin reminded Merry of the cabbages and the three bags of potatoes they had lifted the week before, and the mushrooms the week before that. Merry replied, "My point is, he's clearly overreacting!"
5. Before Gandalf escaped from Saruman, Saruman told him, "Embrace the Power of the Ring, or embrace your own ________" what?

Answer: destruction

Gandalf replied, "There is only one Lord of the Ring. Only one who can bend it to his will. And he does not share power." This happened when he was on top of the tower, after learning of Sauron's betrayal. At that moment, a piercing call broke the air and the eagle swooped down to Gandalf's rescue.

The two flew off from the tower and into the stormy sky as Saruman muttered from behind, "So you have chosen death."
6. Lord Elrond told Gandalf, "This evil cannot be concealed by the power of the ________."

Answer: Elves

Lord Elrond told Gandalf that the Elves did not have the power to take on both Mordor and Isengard. He said this as they were both in Rivendell, waiting as the enemies approached. Much to Gandalf's dismay, he was told that the Ring could not stay in Rivendell. Gandalf knew that Frodo would have to continue to bear "the burden he should never have had to bear".
7. According to Lord Elrond, "It is because of _______ that the Ring survives."

Answer: Men

While in Rivendell, he told Gandalf, "I was there 3,000 years ago. I was there the day the strength of men failed." He flashed back to the battle on the day that Isildur took the Ring and refused to destroy it. Lord Elrond said the Men were leaderless and scattered, but Gandalf said there was one who could unite them and reclaim the throne.
8. What is described as "light as a feather, as hard as dragon scales"?

Answer: Mithril

Bilbo gave the Mithril vest to Frodo, and it saved his life after Frodo was stabbed by the cave-troll in the Mines of Moria.
9. Arwen gave to Frodo the Light of Earendil, named after the most beloved star.

Answer: False

It was Galadriel who gave the Light to Frodo. As they rowed away from Lórien, Frodo remembered when Galadriel gave him the light. He saw her appear on the shore, glowing in graceful white light. Her voice echoed, "May it be a light for you, when all other lights go out."
10. According to the narrator, the Elves were all but which?

Answer: Swiftest of all beings

At the beginning, the Narrator told the story of how it all began with the forging of the Great Rings. It was mentioned that the Elves were the "immortal, wisest, and fairest of all beings". All who were given rings were deceived when Sauron created a Master Ring, in the fires of Mount Doom - the One Ring to rule them all.
11. When facing the Balrog, Gandalf told the Fellowship to draw their swords.

Answer: False

On the way to Khazad-Dûm the Balrog appeared, surrounded by a hissing glow of flames.
"What is this new devilry?" Boromir whispered.
Gandalf calmly replied, "A Balrog. A demon of the ancient world." As it approached Gandalf said, "This foe is beyond any of you... Run!" And the group took off running for Khazad-Dúm.
12. At Khazad-Dúm, after being chased by the Balrog, who was the first to jump over the gap in the crumbling rocks?

Answer: Legolas

Legolas jumped first, and called to Gandalf (who jumped second). Third was Boromir, holding Merry and Pippin. Sam was tossed by Aragorn, but Gimli said, "Nobody tosses a dwarf!" He barely made the leap (Legolas caught him by the beard). Finally only Aragorn and Frodo remained as the rocks collapsed beneath them. Aragorn told Frodo to lean forward and the two reached the other side before the rocks crumbled behind them.
13. The Crebain of Dunland, spies of Saruman, appeared when the Fellowship was on a course in what direction from the Misty Mountains?

Answer: West

The Fellowship was on a course west of the Misty Mountains and heading south towards the Gap of Rohan when the creatures appeared. Legolas spotted a "wisp of cloud" in the sky, moving fast, and against the wind. Gandalf realized that the creatures were spies of Saruman and the path south was being watched. He announced, "We must take the Pass of Caradhras."
14. Boromir referred to Aragorn as all but which?

Answer: My Leader

When Boromir was wounded after fighting valiantly against the opposing army, he spoke for a moment with Aragorn. He showed that he had finally accepted Aragorn not only as the king of the throne, but his king as well. His last words were saying, "My brother, my captain, my king."
15. What were Gandalf the Grey's last words?

Answer: fly you fools

Gandalf faced the demon on the bridge of Khazad-Dúm, willing it not to pass. He said, "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn." It tried to strike him and Gandalf demanded, "Go back to the Shadow. You shall not pass!" The creature fell into the depths, pulling Gandalf off the rocks with it.

As he struggled to hold, Gandalf said, "Fly, you fools!" and tumbled into the darkness. His words were the first to be heard, echoing through the mountains in "The Two Towers".
