Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Frodo Baggins stops reading a book when Gandalf approaches

This happens in the first scenes of the film, after the prologue (narrated by the Elvish queen Galadriel) informs us of the story of the One Ring and how the Dark Lord Sauron was thwarted in his first attempt to rule over all Middle-Earth.

Frodo Baggins, nephew of Bilbo Baggins, is reading a book, while the entire vicinity of the Shire is preparing for Bilbo's 111st birthday. Upon hearing Gandalf's cart, he stops reading and goes on to welcome him, initially exclaiming that the wizard is rather late, only to be reminded that wizards arrive precisely when they mean to. Gandalf knows more about Bilbo and the Ring he has in his possession, including the fact that Bilbo plans to disappear after the party and leave the Shire.
2. Strider the Ranger makes his first appearance

After Bilbo disappears during the party by using the One Ring and then gets angry when Gandalf instructs him to leave it behind, the Grey Wizard has even more entrenched suspicions about the origins of the object. By his research, he surmises that the Ring is the very same that was crafted by Sauron, to control all others and subjugate Middle-Earth. He drops by Frodo's home and informs him of all this, telling him that he must leave the Shire, because Sauron knows who has the artifact and intends to retrieve it. He plans to link up with Frodo in the nearby settlement of Bree, in the Prancing Pony Inn, after meeting up with the head of his Order, Saruman the White (who, however, has concocted a vile treachery and is doing Sauron's bidding).

On his way to Bree, Frodo and his trusted gardener and friend Sam Gamgee meet two other Hobbits, Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck and Peregrin "Pippin" Took, before getting chased by the Dark Lord's undead servants, the Nazgul. After reaching the inn, they are dismayed to learn that Gandalf has not appeared. A strange man called Strider is also present in the inn and espies Frodo, later rescuing him and his companions when the Nazgul attack the inn at night. Strider is later revealed to be Aragorn, son of Arathorn, heir of Isildur, who can claim the vacant throne of Gondor, the greatest Kingdom of Men.
3. The four Hobbits and Strider confront the Nazgul in Amon Sul

After narrowly escaping Bree, the Hobbits and Strider set out for Rivendell, the domain of the Elvish Lord Elrond. Midway through the journey, they bivouac in the abandoned watchtower of Amon Sul. Strider gives the Hobbits short swords to defend themselves and goes on patrol. Foolishly. Frodo's companions light a fire while he is asleep, inadvertently alerting the Nazgul.

In the ensuing melee, Frodo gets stabbed.
4. Frodo Baggins wakes up in Rivendell on the 24th of October

After being wounded, Frodo is in great peril: he might turn undead like the Nazgul. Although Strider tries to slow down the speed of the poison, only Elvish medicine can heal him. Thankfully, Elrond's daughter, Arwen, has been seeking the Hobbits and Strider and finds them. Arwen rides fast towards Rivendell with Frodo, hotly pursued by the Nazgul until they reach the river Bruinen.

The Nazgul demand that Arwen surrenders Frodo to them. The Elvish princess replies, "If you want him, come and claim him." The Nazgul start crossing the river, but Arwen performs a spell, leading the water to assume the shape of charging horses and wash the evil wraiths away.

Although Frodo has been terribly weakened by his ordeal, he is healed, waking up on October 24, with Gandalf watching over him.
5. The Fellowship is formed

Shortly after Frodo is healed, Elrond calls a Council where all the Free Peoples of Middle-Earth are going to be represented. The aim of the Council is to agree on how to combat the threat of Mordor. After much deliberation and the occasional heated disagreement, the consensus is reached: the One Ring must be destroyed. Frodo volunteers to be the one to take it to Mount Doom, deep inside Mordor, where it was forged, and cast it into the chasm whence it came.

The Fellowship of the Ring is formed around him, consisting of the other three Hobbits, Gandalf, the elf Legolas, the dwarf Gimli, Strider (who during the council is revealed to be Aragorn, the heir to the throne of Gondor) and Boromir, son of the Steward of Gondor.
6. Gandalf faces a Balrog of Morgoth

After the Fellowship is formed, they initially attempt to enter Mordor by the southern pass (which however is kept under close watch by Saruman the White, who has turned evil) and Caradhras (where the snows and Saruman's Voice foil them). As a result, they have to go through the Mines of Moria, where several dangers await, including a monstrous Watcher at the gates, hordes of Orcs, a Cave Troll and ultimately, a Balrog, a fell creature which Gandalf descibes as "a demon of the ancient world". The Grey Wizard confronts this mighty adversary on a very narrow bridge, breaking it with his staff, after defiantly telling the Balrog "You shall not pass!".

In the process, the Balrog wraps his fiery whip around Gandalf's feet, dragging him to the abyss. Wizard and Balrog, champions of good and evil respectively, fall together, with the rest of the Fellowship believing that Gandalf is dead. (However, he will meet his friends in the next film, having come back as Gandalf the White.)
7. Frodo looks at the Mirror of Galadriel

After Gandalf's gallant stand, the rest of the Fellowship manages to exit the Mines and eventually reach the woods of Lothlorien, which is ruled by the Elvish King Celeborn and his wife, Queen Galadriel. There they are able to find some rest, if only corporeal, since their hearts and minds are troubled by the enemy's looming shadow and the grief for Gandalf's apparent demise. During the night, Frodo sees Galadriel approaching her Mirror, which in fact is a vessel filled with crystal-clear water upon which one can gaze. Asking what is he going to see, Frodo receives the answer that the Mirror "shows many things - things that were, things that are, and some things that have not yet come to pass". So, he looks and he sees what will happen in case Sauron takes the Ring back, including gruesome scenes of the Shire being torched and his friends tortured.
8. The Fellowship receives gifts from Galadriel

After Frodo has looked at the Mirror, Galadriel reveals that she fears the same things with him. She warns him that Boromir will try to take the Ring by force and that, one by one, the Ring will destroy them all. Out of his free will, Frodo offers Galadriel the Ring, which she confesses she had greatly desired, musing that, if she took it, she would become an almighty Queen, whom all should love and despair. Coming back to her senses, her ambitions overcome, she declares that she will remain Galadriel, even if that means that she will diminish. Frodo then remarks that he knows what should be done (meaning he will go to Mordor all alone), although he is afraid. The elvish Lady shows him her own Ring of Power, Nenya, coming to the conclusion that bearing a Ring of Power means to be alone.

The next day, Galadriel gives each of the Fellowship members (save Aragorn, who has his own precious gift from Arwen of Rivendell, Lord Elrond's daughter) a gift. Merry and Pippin receive knives, Legolas a bow, Boromir a belt, Sam Gamgee some Elvish rope, Gimli three hairs from Galadriel's own head and Frodo the light of Earendil, most beloved star of the Elves, with a wish that it illuminates his path in dark places "when all other light is gone".
9. Boromir perishes at the hands of the enemy

After leaving Lothlorien, the Fellowship travels down the great River Anduin. At a place called Amon Hen, as Galadriel had warned, Boromir attempts to take the Ring from Frodo, which he fails to do when the Hobbit puts the ring on momentarily and evades his pursuer. Yet, this is only the beginning of the trouble, as a great host of Uruk-hai from Isengard, Saruman's fortress, attack the Fellowship. Frodo, encouraged by Aragorn to leave and complete the Quest, crosses to the eastern side of the river, ultimately accepting Samwise as his only companion.

The Uruks, tasked with "finding the Halfling" (Halfling is another name for Hobbit), capture Merry and Pippin. Boromir, trying to defend them, slays many Uruks, but perishes after receiving wounds from three arrows. Before succumbing to his injuries, the valiant warrior acknowledges Aragorn as his King.
10. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli start pursuing the Uruk-hai

After Boromir's death and Frodo's crossing of the river Anduin with Samwise, the rest of the Fellowship has to either cross the river or try to rescue their captured companions. Aragorn decides for the latter.

Will Merry and Pippin be alright? What will happen with the main quest to destroy the One Ring? One can learn by watching the rest of the trilogy and reading the books!
