Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Here are the characters that DO appear in "The Fellowship of the Ring":

Played by actress Liv Tyler, Arwen is more prominent in the film than in the book. In the book, it is the elf Glorfindel who finds Frodo after the Nazgûl attack and helps him on the road to Rivendell. But in the movie, it is Arwen who finds Frodo after he is wounded and bravely rescues him from the pursuing Ringwraiths, using her horse to outrun them and calling upon the river to wash them away.

Barliman Butterbur is portrayed by actor David Weatherley in the film, and his character is greatly reduced from what it was in Tolkien's book. In the film, Barliman Butterbur is the innkeeper of the Prancing Pony; his scenes are mostly walk-ons, and much of his backstory and role in the plot, like the references to the letter from Gandalf, were edited out.

Bilbo Baggins, the main character in the book, "The Hobbit" is portrayed in the film series of "Lord of the Rings" by actor Ian Holm, the elderly hobbit who has possessed the One Ring for decades. The story, in both the film and book, begins with Bilbo celebrating his 111th birthday, dashing about trying to find food and drink for the Wizard. Before leaving the Shire, Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his nephew, Frodo Baggins. It was with some difficulty too, as the Ring has such a pull on the holder.

Elendil is portrayed by actor Peter McKenzie, making a brief appearance during the film's opening CGI prologue, depict the Battle of the Last Alliance, in which Elendil is the High King of the Dúnedain, the High King of Arnor and Gondor, and the High King of the Realms in Exile. His famous sword, Narsil, is broken when he is killed in battle by Sauron, and it is his son, who takes it up, then cuts the One Ring from Sauron's hand, an act that defeats Sauron for that age.

Elrond is played by Hugo Weaving (whom you may recognize as Mr. Smith in "The Matrix") and appears as the Lord of Rivendell, where Frodo and the others in the fellowship go after leaving the Shire. In the movie's prologue, he is the leader of the Elven forces in the War of the Last Alliance, fighting alongside Elendil. After Sauron's defeat, Elrond leads Elendil's son to the fires of Mount Doorn, urging him to destroy the One Ring. When that directive is refused, the core the Ring's history is underway, as Elrond recounts later to the fellowship, "I was there the day the strength of men failed."

Gollum (aka Smeagol) is only barely glimpsed in "The Fellowship of the Ring"; his key role in the series will later in the two sequels, as he portrayed via motion capture and voice, by Andy Serkis. The film's prologue explains how Gollum possessed the Ring for 500 years before it abandoned him and was found by Bilbo. Gollum's shadowy presence later in the film is noted by the fellowship, as he has been trailing them, following them, waiting for his chance to snare the Ring back.

The Gondorian Archivist is the elderly, scholarly robed keeper of the archives in Rivendell, who leads Gandalf down a winding staircase into the archives to search for information about the One Ring. Played by actor Michael Elsworth, he is one of the first humans from Minas Tirith (Gondor) shown in the movie, and appears at the Council of Elrond in Rivendell, a representative of Gondor. Fun fact is that the actor portraying him, had another small role in the film, but also served as a stand-in for actor Ian McKellen on the set.

Haldir is the elf who leads the Fellowship when they enter Lothlórien, after they escaped the Mines of Moria, guiding them to meet Celeborn and Galadriel, the Lord and Lady of the forest. Played by New Zealand actor Craig Parker, Haldir is initially unwelcoming of the fellowship, insulting the Dwarf by saying, "The Dwarf breathes so loud we could have shot him in the dark" and "We have not had dealings with the dwarves since the dark days." His role in the movie is bigger than in the book, as he is the only Elf of Lothlórien in the film who speaks the Common Tongue fluently, communicating directly with the hobbits and the rest of the company.

Full name Meriadoc Brandybuck, he is called Merry for the most part and is a hobbit in the Shire, a cousin of our hero. Portrayed by actor Dominic Monaghan, Merry is one of the four hobbits who leave the Shire forming part of the fellowship. Billy Boyd plays Pippin, aka Peregrin Took, and is another one of the hobbits. Merry is brave and resourceful, often displaying more confidence than Pippin. Pippin has perhaps the more mischievous nature, getting him into a bit of trouble sometimes as when he drops a stone in a well in the Mines of Moria, prompting Gandalf to chastise him, "Fool of a Took!" Merry and Pippin, are cousins and best friends. Merry and Pippin act in unison a lot, for instance getting caught trying to steal a firework in the beginning at the birthday party, to heroically misdirecting the Uruk-hai away from our hero, allowing him to escape near the end, but getting captured for this noble act.

And now, here are the choices that are not characters in "The Fellowship of the Ring":

Aidan is a central character in the horror film, "The Ring", a movie that like "The Fellowship of the Ring" was released in 2001. Aidan is the young son who has watched the videocassette that once viewed, curses the watcher with a 7-day deadline for death. Also from that film was the character Samara, the deadly ghost who is seen on the videocassette crawling out of the well, and lurches spasmodically toward the TV screen.

"The Ring" is based on the 1998 Japanese horror film called "Ringu", and Kanrinin is a character from that film; he is the manager of an apartment complex. Also from "Ringu," is the character Masami; she has witnessed firsthand the supernatural horror curse in action.

A very different film is 2005's "The Ringer" starring Johnny Knoxvile as Steve Barker, pretending to have a disability so he can compete in the Special Olympics. Stavi, is a character in this film, a friend of Steve's.
