The entire movie is about Chris Brander and his feelings towards Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart). He comes back to New Jersey, after ten years of living in California as a stud, and thinks that things with Jamie will be different. He soon finds out that he is still in love with her, but she still thinks of him as just a friend.

When Chris left New Jersey he was in the friend zone with Jamie. When he finds himself back in New Jersey, he is back where he started with her, even though he does come back completely gorgeous. His "project", Samantha, isn't making things any easier for him with her constant complaining.

Dusty has liked Jamie since high school, just like Chris, and like Chris he has just returned to New Jersey. Even though Dusty seems to be into Jamie, he's really just looking for payback because he couldn't have her in high school.

Mike fiddles with her tazergun, forgets it's a weapon, and points it straight at Samantha. He shoots her and she falls from the second story balcony at the mall. Afterwards, she has an ice pack around her head, she eats toothpaste, and thinks she's a bubble. Later, she gets booed when she sings at the Metal Shop (formerly the Coffee House), and gets in a fight with a drunk.

The line is taken from the song "Jamie Smiles", which Dusty wrote for Jamie in high school. We see this at the very beginning of the movie when Chris is attempting to confess his love for Jamie. Dusty comes into the room (with a bad case of acne, nerves, and a stutter) singing this song for Jamie.

Chris is hoping for a romantic evening with Jamie, but she has a surprise for him. She brings Dusty along, and in turn Dusty invites Chris' mom.

Chris says this (to his boss) in reference to Samantha James. He had gone out with her before and his boss had just assigned him to get Samantha to sign a contract with them. This means that he has to spend more time with her and her craziness.

"Wait a minute, am I being PUNKED? Where's Ashton?". Samantha's extremely self-centered and doesn't understand that there is a world outside of her. She almost sets a plane on fire and doesn't grasp the concept that she almost killed everyone on board the plane. Instead she thinks she's being "Punk'd".

"Simply Dusty, is there any other kind?", Chris says this as kind of a remark on how lame Dusty really is. We all know how Chris really feels about Dusty, but this is the first time he shows his hatred for him to Jamie. Even though Chris is intoxicated, he still makes enough of an impression on Jamie that she realizes what a fake Dusty really is.

Answer: New Year's Eve

Chris runs away, again, and is back in California when he realizes how much he needs to be with Jamie. He gets on the next plane to New Jersey, because he needs to tell Jamie just how much she means to him. Just before Jamie answers the door, we see her watching the ball drop in New York. This signifies New Year's eve, and a new beginning for Jamie and Chris' relationship!
