Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first "Back to the Future" movie, Marty goes back in time and gets hit by his grandfather's car. When he wakes up he is in his grandfather's house with young versions of his mother, aunts and uncles. His grandfather is excited because with his new TV he can now watch who when they eat?

Answer: Jackie Gleason on "The Honeymooners"

When Marty goes back in time and is eating supper with his grandparents, mother, aunts and uncles (who all think he is a local named Calvin Klein), they are watching "The Honeymooners". Marty then mistakingly yells out, "Hey I've seen this!" which causes confusion since it is brand new at the time.
2. In "The Godfather Part II", Michael goes to visit Hyman Roth in a home down in Florida. Michael sits down with Hyman while he is watching TV. What is on TV?

Answer: Football

After Michael tells Hyman that he has not followed sports in a long time, Hyman tells Michael this about baseball: "I loved baseball ever since Arnold Rothstien fixed the World Series in 1919." Hyman Roth had worked with Michael's family since before Michael was born.

In this scene, Michael is trying to figure out if Hyman was the one who attacked his home. This will later cause tension between Michael and his brother Fredo as Fredo betrayed Michael to Hyman Roth.
3. In the movie "Rain Man", Raymond likes to watch certain TV shows. At one point in the movie Charlie tries to convince a housewife in the midwest to let them into their home to watch which TV show?

Answer: The People's Court

Charlie needs a TV fast or Raymond will have a fit from not getting to watch Judge Wapner on "The People's Court". Charlie poses as a man from the Nielsen ratings company, which doesn't work, and finally begs the housewife to let them watch "The People's Court". She replies, "Well we like to watch cartoons. Do you think he would settle for that?" He, of course does not.
4. In "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones", Obi-Wan and Anakin chase an assassin through the skyways and streets of Coruscant. The chase ends in a bar. What kind of programming was playing on the TVs in this bar?

Answer: Sports

The chase ends in a sports bar where TVs are featured that show many different sports including what appears to be something like soccer played by robots. There is a great scene in the bar where Obi-Wan uses a Jedi mind trick on a local, mirroring him using it in "Episode IV" when he is much older.
5. In "2001: A Space Odyssey", the first time we see Dr. Dave Bowman he is watching TV and eating. What is he watching?

Answer: A news report from BBC channel 12

Bowman watches a report called "The World Tonight" on the BBC. The report is about his own mission and is a clever way of letting the audience know what is going on. We are introduced to HAL in this scene as well. In the next scene we see Frank Poole watching TV. He is getting a birthday message from his parents.
6. The Oliver Stone movie "JFK" has a few scenes where the characters watch history unfold on TV news programs. Near the beginning of the film, Jim Garrison goes to a local establishment to watch the report of President Kennedy being shot. From which famous news caster does he hear of the president's death?

Answer: Walter Cronkite

Oliver Stone sets the tone for the movie early on in scenes like this one. He has some people very upset at the news while others are happy that the president was shot. In the next few scenes we see Jim Garrison watching on the news all kinds of information and footage about Lee Harvey Oswald, including his shooting by Jack Ruby.
7. In "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", the lead character is haunted by a vision that he can't quite place. He finally sees what he is searching for on TV. What is it that he sees on TV?

Answer: Devil's Tower

The Aliens had wanted to meet with humans and so planted a vision of Devil's Tower in Wyoming in some people's heads. The ones that made the connection then ran off, leaving all behind, to go to the meeting place. Devil's Tower is a 1,267 foot tall mountain of rock and was the first national monument for the USA.
8. In "Taxi Driver", there is a great scene where Travis Bickle is watching TV with his gun in his hand. How does he destroy the TV?

Answer: He pushes it over with his foot.

Right after the scene of Travis shooting a robber in a small local store, we go to a scene of him watching "American Bandstand" while holding his gun. We then go to a scene of him secretly watching a presidential candidate speak, then right to the scene of a couple arguing about intimacy which is when he kicks over the TV.

In the next scene, Travis meets with a prostitute, played by Jodie Foster, in an attenpt to save her. As is shown in these scenes, Travis struggles with intimacy, loneliness and the right thing to do thoughout the film.
9. In "Napoleon Dynamite", Kip is watching a commercial on TV and as a result, later asks Napoleon for a lift downtown. What does Kip see on TV?

Answer: A commercial for Rex Kwon Do Self Defence

Since Kip wants to be a cage fighter, he gets inspired when he sees this commercial. He later puts on his rollerskates and asks Napoleon to pull him into town on his bike. After taking a free Rex Kwon Do lesson, he leaves calling it a rip-off.
10. In Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction", Jules mentions that Marsellus Wallace's wife was in a TV pilot when Vincent is trying to figure out how Marsellus met his wife. Vincent says, "Pilot, what's a pilot?". Jules says, " Well you know the shows on TV?" What is Vincent's response to this?

Answer: "I don't watch TV."

After making sure that Vincent has actually heard of TV, Jules then goes on to explain what a pilot is. The following quote is his explanation: "Well, the way they make shows is, they make one show. That show's called a pilot. Then they show that show to the people who make shows, and on the strength of that one show they decide if they're going to make more shows.

Some pilots get picked and become television programs. Some don't, become nothing. She starred in one of the ones that became nothing." Vincent is asking questions because his boss, Marsellus, wants him to take his wife out while he is away.

He is very nervous and is trying to get his game plan together.
