Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This movie takes place in a high school setting in the 80's and the star makes the ultimate sacrifice for the girl he loves via time travel. The song is "Head Over Heels" by Tears For Fears.

Answer: Donnie Darko

This is a great independent film that's dark and unpredictable. It's refreshing to see accomplished actors take risks by enrolling in projects that aren't the cookie cutter products of Hollywood.
2. This action thriller made references to "Alice In Wonderland" and used breakthrough technology that allowed the viewer to see 180 degrees of the action. The song is "Dragula" by Rob Zombie. Are you awake or dreaming?

Answer: The Matrix

This innovative movie has a great opening scene with Carrie Ann Moss as a super tough woman kicking arse. One can appreciate the fighting scenes, since the actors underwent some hardcore martial arts training. Though a lot of the stunts were done on wires, some consider this cheating.
3. This movie is based on a true story of crime and family loyalty in the farmlands of Pennsylvania, starring Sean Penn. The song is "Live To Tell" by his then wife Madonna.

Answer: At Close Range

This movie made me into a Sean Penn fan. Christopher Walken costars with Sean Penn, but Sean upstages him with an amazing performance.
4. This highly edited Oliver Stone film made a blatant statement on the sensationalism in media. The song is "Back In Baby's Arms" by Patsy Cline.

Answer: Natural Born Killers

This song was played during the sitcom piece of the move when Micky first meets Mallory and her deranged family. Rodney Dangerfield plays the dad and the song lends a superficial, creepy, feel. Great choice in music.
5. This movie stars Ben Stiller who experiences unrequited love with a high school sweetheart. The song is "Is She Really Going Out With Him" by Joe Jackson.

Answer: There's Something About Mary

This movie borders on the truly gross, but one cannot expect anything less from the creators, the Farrelly Brothers.
6. This musical/love story uses many great songs not performed by the original artists. The song is "It Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana.

Answer: Moulin Rouge

This movie creates a whole new category for musicals. Who knew the stars could sing?
7. This animated feature starred Cameron Diaz as the fairytale princess searching for true love's first kiss. The song is " I'm A Believer".

Answer: Shrek

A great movie for all ages. The scene with "The Dating Game" bit is hilarious. The creator of the actual "Dating Game", Chuck Barris, now has a movie out based on a book he wrote called "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind". It's on my list of movies to see.
8. This quirky comedy, based on a book by the same author of "High Fidelity", has a self absorbed Hugh Grant playing guitar with a 12 year old child in front of the entire school covering the song "Killing Me Softly" by Roberta Flack.

Answer: About A Boy

Nick Hornby is the author of the book the movie is based on. This is one of those rare occasions that the film outshines the novel.
9. This movie is based on a true story and is directed by Martin Scorsese. The song is "Layla" by Eric Clapton and only the end of the song is played while the camera pans on a pink Cadillac with a dead couple inside and other various murders.

Answer: Goodfellas

This movie is a classic and almost makes you want to become a wiseguy. The piano solo at the end of "Layla" played while discovering a slew of corpses is genious.
10. Yet another movie based on a book. This psychological thriller keeps you and the star (Christian Bale) guessing whether or not coworkers and hookers have been murdered. The song is "The Greatest Love Of All" by Whitney Houston.

Answer: American Psycho

Christian Bale is in peak physical form for his role in the "Me Decade".
