Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jamie Farr plays "The Sheik", who delivers the following line to his sister, to justify his entry into a mad-cap, cross-country race, in which 1981 movie, directed by Hal Needham? "My driving is rivalled only by the lightning bolts from the heavens"!

Answer: Cannonball Run

Jamie Farr, who found fame as Corporal Max Klinger in the TV sitcom "M*A*SH", plays the oil rich sheik who's determined to win the race at any cost, even if that means he has to buy the race. Rather appropriately he is seen driving a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow in the race.

He is joined by an all star cast headed by Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise. Others in the race are Roger Moore, driving an Aston Martin DB5 in an obvious send up of James Bond, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Farrah Fawcett and Jackie Chan.

The race is an illegal contest that sees competitors come to grief in comical ways and resort to various methods of cheating. All the while the police are in pursuit.
2. "This car just winked at me". This quote was uttered by NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, but what was the title of the movie, starring Lindsay Lohan, that it came from?

Answer: Herbie: Fully Loaded

Herbie, who first appeared in "The Love Bug" (1968) is a Volkswagen Beetle that basically has a mind of his own and the ability to do a range of things, including driving himself. In this movie Herbie tricks Maggie (Lindsay Lohan) into racing him against a NASCAR champion, played by Matt Dillon; a race which Herbie wins narrowly.

This in turn leads to Maggie looking to return to racing after having been involved in a street racing accident. There were a number of cameo appearances by NASCAR drivers in this film, including Tony Stewart, Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jimmie Johnson and the aforementioned Jeff Gordon.

The quote above does not play a major role in the movie, apart from delivering a moment of comedy; Gordon is speaking to fellow driver Jimmie Johnson who looks at him with a wry smile and inquires if he (Gordon) is okay and whether the pressure is getting to him.
3. A country not renowned for its prowess at winter sports enters a team in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. So buoyed by the moment is team member Sanka Coffie that he exclaims "I'm feeling very Olympic today, how about you?", in which 1993 Jon Turteltaub movie?

Answer: Cool Runnings

It's the first day of racing for Olympic bob sled competition and, after overcoming so many obstacles, including an overturned disqualification, Jamaican team member Sanka Coffie is so excited he wants the world to know. Unfortunately he's in the midst of the Russian team at the time, who have no idea what he's talking about and look at him as if though he's a little bit weird. The film stars John Candy as a disgraced former bob-sledder who agrees to coach four young men as Jamaica's first ever bob-sled team. Three of the team members, played by Leon Robinson, Malik Yoba, and Rawle D. Lewis, are motivated by their failure to gain a place in their country's 100 metre sprint team for the 1988 Summer Olympics. Distributed by Disney Pictures Limited the film was made on a budget of $14 million dollars and took in excess of $150 million at the box office.
4. "I am a British Citizen, I have nothing to fear! [Gunshot goes off in background] ... except bullets.", were the hesitant words of inventor and adventurer Phileas Fogg, played by Steve Coogan, in which 2004 film?

Answer: Around the World in 80 Days

This movie is based on the novel, carrying the same name, by Jules Verne, however, the story in this film version deviates a great deal from Verne's original work. Phileas Fogg takes on a bet to race around the world in the set time (80 days). Success will see him become the Minister for Science, failure will see his lab destroyed with the rider that he is not to invent another thing.

In the race he is accompanied by his valet, Passepartout, played by Jackie Chan who, unbeknownst to Fogg, has stolen the Jade Buddha from the Bank of England.

It was given to Lord Kelvin of England by the Chinese General Fang in exchange for military aid. Fogg and his valet are being pursued by the General's warriors at the time he utters the initially defiant quote at them.

They hastily make their escape in a hot air balloon.
5. A young Elizabeth Taylor utters the line "I want it all quickly 'cause I don't want God to stop and think and wonder if I'm getting more than my share", in which 1944 movie that sees her ride a horse called The Pie in the Grand National?

Answer: National Velvet

Based on the novel by Enid Bagnold, the movie sees Velvet Brown (Taylor) win the horse in a raffle and then train him with the help of her father, played by Donald Crisp and a hired hand played by Mickey Rooney. The above line is one of Taylor's movie quotes that's often used to highlight her career.

At the time she is imploring Mi Taylor (Mickey Rooney) to help train and race the horse who's having second thoughts about the wisdom of the venture and his own abilities. One of Taylor's most famous roles, the film was selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry because of its cultural and historical significance.
6. A devout Scottish Christian, played by Ian Charleson, indicates that he has been gifted his speed by God as he prepares for the 1924 Olympic Games, in which 1981 film directed by Hugh Hudson? "I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure".

Answer: Chariots of Fire

One of the best British films of all time, "Chariots of Fire" was nominated for seven Academy Awards and succeeded in winning four of them, including the coveted Best Picture award. Charleson plays Eric Liddell, who qualifies for the final of the 100 metres but is unable to run because his beliefs prevent him from working (racing) on the Sabbath, the day of the race.

The script, beautifully crafted by Colin Welland, uses the conflict between Liddell's beliefs and his desire to run. Liddell sees his running as a way of glorifying God and uses the above line to justify his actions to his sister Jennie, who strongly disapproves of his course to enter competitive racing.

The film also contains a memorable score written by the Greek composer Vangelis.
7. Who exclaims "I'm a precision instrument of speed and aerodynamics" in a 2006 Pixar animated feature and what was the name of that film?

Answer: Lightning McQueen (Cars)

"Cars", whose characters are anthropomorphic motor vehicles, was Pixar's final feature before it was purchased by Disney. The movie centres on Lightning (voiced by Owen Wilson), a rookie who is in a position to win the famed Piston Cup. A series of events sees him stranded in a run-down town called Radiator Springs.

It is here that he meets a former champion, Doc Hudson, voiced by Paul Newman, and learns some valuable lessons about life and racing. Lightning is young and brash, as evidenced by the above quote, which he blurts out to Mater, the tow truck, when they first meet. Mater, a little slow on the uptake, replies "You hurt your what"? The movie was directed by John Lasseter and made on a budget of $120 million.

It would return in excess of $450 million from the box office.
8. In a film not noted for its dialogue, the following line is a standout: "Ask any racer, any real racer. It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile; winning's winning". It was spoken by Vin Diesel's character, Domenic Toretto, in which 2001 film directed by Rob Cohen?

Answer: The Fast and the Furious

"The Fast and the Furious" sees LAPD lawman Brian O'Conner, played by Paul Walker, infiltrate a street racing gang in a bid to uncover a gang of thieves. Brian has been narrowly beaten by Dominic in a street race and is feeling rather smug. Dom cuts him down to size with a brutal assessment that identifies all the mistakes Brian has made before, delivering the line above as a coup de grace. Made on a relatively small budget of $38 million, the film took in over $200 million at the box office, while propelling Vin Diesel to superstar level. Diesel had previously received good reviews for his voice work on "The Iron Giant" (1999) and created a strong impression as the anti-hero Riddick in the movie "Pitch Black" (2000).
9. Ricky's father Reese passes on the following advice, "And the first thing you gotta learn if you're gonna be a racecar driver, is that you don't listen to losers like your know-it-all teacher here.", in which 2006 movie, that stars Will Ferrell?

Answer: Talladega Nights

The full title of this movie is "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" and it was directed by Adam Mckay. The quote is directed at Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) by his drunken father during a Career's Day at school. The resultant speech sees Ricky expelled and he is delivered this advice by his father; "If you're not first, you're last".

This becomes Ricky's creed for life. It drives (pun intended) Ricky to the top of the NASCAR world. The film then follows his spectacular fall from grace and endeavours to regain his former glories.

The film has a strong ensemble cast, received positive reviews and continued a great run of success for Will Ferrell.
10. The character Charles Howard (Jeff Bridges) points out the following, "The horse is too small, the jockey too big, the trainer too old, and I'm too dumb to know the difference", during which film, that is loosely based on the story a horse that became a hero during The Great Depression in America?

Answer: Seabiscuit

Charles Howard is the principal owner of Seabiscuit. Tobey Maguire plays Red Pollard, his jockey, a young man whose family has lost its fortune as a result of The Great Depression, and Chris Cooper plays Tom Smith, the horse's trainer. The film is loosely based on Laura Hillenbrand's book "Seabiscuit: An American Legend" and it tells the tale of three men who are down on their fortune and a horse who is, at the start, considered a hack and their growth with the success of the horse.

The above line is delivered pompously by the self promoting Howard, at a press conference, asking what his competition is afraid of. The story is an uplifting tale that deals with second chances and is rather poignantly summed up by a line from Maguire's character, Red Pollard, at the end of the film. "You know, everyone thinks that we found this broken down horse and fixed him, but we didn't.

He fixed us, every one of us, and I guess in a way we kinda fixed each other, too."
