The first time H.I. is paroled, he is seen about to rob Short Stop, and the second time he is paroled, he is seen fleeing the scene after robbing Short Stop. Short Stop is also the store from which H.I. steals the Huggies.

H.I. and Ed meet when he arrested and she is the booking officer on duty. With each arrest H.I. and Ed's relationship blossoms. Each time Ed books H.I., an unseen officer shouts reminders at her. The three reminders are: snap a profile shot of H.I., give him his one phone call, and take his fingerprints.

After H.I. and Ed marry, he gets a job at Hudsucker Industries drilling holes in sheet metal. The company's name can be seen on H.I.'s jumpsuit when he collects his paycheck. The book continues on Nathan Jr.'s journey, including being splattered with blue paint when he is in the care of Gale and Evelle, and being scorched in the explosion that kills Leonard Smalls.
