Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An unemployed, henpecked drunk unintentionally captures a bank robber and is given a job at the bank.

Answer: The Bank Dick

This comedy classic, written by and starring W.C. Fields, is just as funny today as it was then. Fields played Egbert Souse, accent on the SAY. Joe the bartender was played by Shemp Howard, brother of Moe and Curly and sometime Stooge himself.
2. Various animated segments are set to the music of the masters.

Answer: Fantasia

The other choices are three of the musical selections in the film. The other two are "The Rite of Spring" and "Ave Maria". Conductor Leopold Stokowski and musicologist Deems Taylor were featured in the live action segments.
3. An American reporter and a lovely lady track down spies in London.

Answer: Foreign Correspondent

For Hitchcock, Joel McCrae was an atypical choice as star. Hitch later preferred Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart, but they hadn't appeared in any of his movies yet. Laraine Day had the female lead. She later married baseball manager Leo Durocher.
4. A poor family tries to start life anew in a different part of the country. The title is "The ______ of _____". Please fill in all four words.

Answer: The Grapes of Wrath

Many consider this film version of Steinbeck's immortal novel to be one of the best American films. It was as much a masterpiece of realism as "Citizen Kane" would be a masterpiece of artifice the following year. Henry Fonda's monologue near the end is an unforgettable moment.
5. A political leader tries to increase his power while a humble barber tries to escape persecution.

Answer: The Great Dictator

In 1940, Adolf Hitler, spoofed in the movie as Adenoid Hynkel, probably seemed like a better target for satire than he does today. Charles Chaplin played both dictator and barber. Jack Oakie, classic "big lug" type, played fellow dictator Benzino Napaloni.
6. A man thrives as a crooked politician, but his honest wife ruins him by making him do something good.

Answer: The Great McGinty

This movie proves the adage "No good deed goes unpunished". Preston Sturges wrote and directed, and Brian Donlevy, not accustomed to leads in "A" pictures, played McGinty, perfect type casting.
7. A newspaper editor tries to get his reporter/ex-wife to stay on the staff by finagling her into writing one last story, about a convict's execution.

Answer: His Girl Friday

"The Front Page" was the title of the original play, by Ben Hecht and Charles McArthur, wherein the reporter was a man! Cary Grant played editor Walter Burns, with Roz Russell as reporter Hildy Johnson.
8. A young woman from an ordinary family falls in love with her upper-class boss, but his family disapproves. She gets pregnant.

Answer: Kitty Foyle

Ginger Rogers had the title role and won an Oscar for this somewhat soapy melodrama.
9. Multiple, interwoven stories of the lives of the crew of a freighter.

Answer: The Long Voyage Home

This adaptation of four of Eugene O'Neill's plays was directed by John Ford, so you will not be surprised to know that John Wayne starred and that Ward Bond and John Qualen also appeared. Eugene O'Neill's daughter, Oona, married Charlie Chaplin.
10. The son of a Spanish nobleman tries to free California from the grip of a cruel regime.

Answer: The Mark of Zorro

Tyrone Power, one of Hollywood's most handsome, starred as Don Diego, AKA Zorro (The Fox). Linda Darnell played the lovely Lolita. Basil Rathbone, of course, played the baddest of the bad guys, Captain Pasquale.
11. In the Old West, a con man "marries" a woman of doubtful virtue, and that's how the trouble starts! A masked bandit terrorizes the town for good measure.

Answer: My Little Chickadee

This was the classic pairing of W.C. Fields as Cuthbert J. Twilly and Mae West as Flower Belle Lee. They also got credit for the screenplay. This is the movie where Fields is about to be hanged and the hangman asks him if he has any last requests. Fields says, "I'd like to see Paris before I die". When the hangman continues with the execution, Fields quickly adds, "Philadelphia will do".
12. A spoiled rich woman is about to re-marry when her ex-husband and a reporter show up and throw a monkey wrench into the works.

Answer: The Philadelphia Story

Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, and Jimmy Stewart starred. This classic won Stewart a Best Actor Oscar.
13. A humble Italian worker and his "son" wish for something that seems impossible.

Answer: Pinocchio

That's Gepetto and Pinocchio in one of Disney's best.
14. To quote the imdb: "When a naive young woman marries a rich widower, they settle in his gigantic mansion, where she finds the memory of the first wife maintaining a grip on her husband and the servants." If you know movies, you can fill this one in:

Answer: Rebecca

The Oscar-Winning movie of 1940, directed by Hitchcock, starring Joan Fontaine, Laurence Olivier (in his pre-Sir, pre-Lord period), and Judith Anderson, in her pre-Dame days, as the nasty Mrs. Danvers. Boo! Hiss!
15. A prince is imprisoned, his throne is usurped, and he hooks up with a good-hearted criminal for lots of adventures that lead to the recovery of his power.

Answer: The Thief of Bagdad

The title role was played by none other than Sabu, the Elephant Boy. Wicked Vizier Jaffar was played by Conrad Veidt, best known for his later role as Major Strasser in "Casablanca". They spelled "Bagdad" without the "h" we use today. Hope you enjoyed my quiz. Brace yourself for the top movies of 1941.
