Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Based on the novel by James Hilton, which 1937 movie had Ronald Colman and a group of companions discovering Shangri-La high in the Himalayas?

Answer: Lost Horizon

In director Frank Capra's "Lost Horizon" (1937), Colman's character and a group of others were flying over the mountains when their airplane crashed. To their surprise they discovered a hidden valley, Shangri-La, which was protected from the strife of the outside world. The question became whether to stay in this sheltered land or to return to the duties of life beyond the valley.

The photo of a hazy horizon as the sun set over Lake Huron might have helped you choose the correct title.

The incorrect choices all starred Ronald Colman.
2. In which of these films did Ronald Colman play the dual roles of an English traveller and a Prince of the fictional land of Ruritania?

Answer: The Prisoner of Zenda

In "The Prisoner of Zenda" (1937) Colman portrayed Rudolf Rassendyll, and his identical cousin Rupert who was about to be crowned King of Ruritania when he disappeared. Rudolf was recruited to impersonate his royal cousin until he could be found, in order to keep the evil Prince Michael (Raymond Massey) from grabbing the throne. The 1952 remake starred Stewart Granger in the dual roles.

The photo of my cat in her carrier was meant to suggest a prisoner.

Again, all of the incorrect choices starred Colman.
3. Which fabulous movie land was populated by Munchkins, flying monkeys, witches and a wizard?

Answer: Oz

In "The Wizard of Oz" (1939) a little girl named Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her little dog Toto were swept up in a tornado from their home in Kansas, and deposited in the land of Oz, where they met both good and bad witches, little people called Munchkins and terrifying flying monkeys. As they travelled along the Yellow Brick Road to find the wizard they fell in with a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion who were also trying to reach the wizard, who each hoped would grant them a different favour.

The "Not Kansas" image was meant to remind players of Dorothy's line to Toto, stating that they weren't in Kansas anymore.
4. Upon the export of what item was the economy of the Duchy of Grand Fenwick dependent, in "The Mouse That Roared"?

Answer: Wine

"The Mouse That Roared" (1959) was a comedy about a tiny, fictional, European nation, the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, that decided to declare war on the United States of America, when their economy faced ruin due to a cheap American-made knockoff of their only export. Peter Sellers played three roles, and others in the cast included Leo McKern, William Hartnell and Jean Seberg.

The photo of a nearly empty bottle of wine and a half-drunk glass of the same were meant to point you in the right direction.
5. In "Coming to America" (1988), why was Prince Akeem of Zamunda doing that?

Answer: To find a bride

Unhappy with his father's choice of bride for him, Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) left the fictitious country of Zamunda, in Africa, to go undercover in New York City in an attempt to find a woman who would marry him for himself and not for his kingdom. Both Murphy and Arsenio Hall played multiple roles. James Earl Jones played the king (Akeem's father) and Samuel L. Jackson had a small role.

The photo of bride and groom teddy bears was meant to help you choose the "bride" answer.
6. When the Pevensie children visited Narnia in a 2005 movie, which character was associated with the actor Ray Winstone?

Answer: Mr Beaver

In "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" (2005), led by Lucy the youngest, the four children found the fabulous land of Narnia by going through the back of a wardrobe. The other three were named Susan, Edmund and Peter, and during their adventures they met Mr Tumnus (James McAvoy), a talking lion named Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson), Mr Fox (voiced by Rupert Everett) and Mr and Mrs Beaver (voiced by Ray Winstone and Dawn French). There was also an evil witch played by Tilda Swinton. Mr and Mrs Beaver helped the children during their adventures, but at one point Peter became annoyed enough with Mr Beaver's crankiness to threaten to turn him into a hat!

The photo is of actual damage done to a tree stump by a real Canadian beaver, which was meant to help you choose the correct answer.
7. To what fictitious moon did marine Jake Sully travel in "Avatar" (2009)?

Answer: Pandora

Paraplegic Jake (Sam Worthington) took his twin brother's place, after the brother was killed, in a special mission to the mineral-rich world of Pandora. Given the ability to walk in avatar form, he was promised he would be restored to full health after the mission was completed. Complications arose when Jake formed a bond with an indigenous Na'vi woman (Zoe Saldana) and began to question which side he was on.

The photo of a box was meant to make you think of the myth of Pandora, who was said to have unleashed all sorts of evils on the world when she opened a particular box. Even if it didn't, Mars and Jupiter are not fictitious, and Boxster is a model of Porsche sports car.
8. In which movie did the nation called Panem first appear?

Answer: The Hunger Games

"The Hunger Games" (2012) starred Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark, the two young people chosen from their home District 12 to compete against similar pairs from Panem's other districts in the titular contest. The catch was that only one "tribute" would be declared the winner, after all the others had been killed. A change in the rules gave these two some hope as they fought for their lives. A number of sequels, also based on books by Suzanne Collins, followed.

The image of playing pieces from several games was meant to help in the choice of answer.
9. What sort of building, located in the fictitious Republic of Zubrowka, appeared in the title of a 2014 movie starring Ralph Fiennes?

Answer: Hotel

"The Grand Budapest Hotel" followed the adventures of M. Gustave (Fiennes), concierge of the titular hotel between the world wars, who had his own methods of keeping guests happy. He and his lobby boy, Zero (Tony Revolori), engaged in escapades that were not always entirely legal, but most often very amusing. Others in the cast were F. Murray Abraham, Jude Law, Saoirse Ronan and many others.

The image is of a hotel banquet room, which might have been helpful.
10. What did T'Challa of the hidden African kingdom of Wakanda have to ingest in order to become the namesake of the pictured creature?

Answer: A heart-shaped herb

In "Black Panther" (2018), T'Challa succeeded his father as king of the technologically advanced, yet hidden (and fictitious) kingdom of Wakanda. A concoction made from a heart-shaped herb, which had been exposed to the metal vibranium, gave him powers to become the Black Panther, a super hero who could protect Wakanda from threats from the outside world. Old foes returned to challenge his authority, and T'Challa and his allies were called on to defeat them. Chadwick Boseman starred as T'Challa, with Michael B. Jordan, Martin Freeman and Lupita Nyong'o also in the cast.

The photo is of a melanistic jaguar, or a black panther.
