Michael knew that he as playing a very dangerous game. By taking this case, he was signing on to work both sides, the prosecution and the defense. Somehow he must bring in a character witness that would open the door to their time at Wilkenson without anyone realizing what he was up to.

Danny Snyder was at best, a third rate lawyer, a drunk and he had a drug problem. He was useless as a lawyer, however, he was perfect for reading verbatum, the questions that Michael prepared for him to ask. Michael needed to expose Wilkenson and the abuse the suffered there. That would be the way to get back at each and every one of the guards. Finally, all the files he had kept for years on these men, were going to be of use.

As he told Shakes, the only way to get John and Tommy acquitted was to put theme somewhere else, for the time of the murder.

They needed a witness.

As long as these witnesses testified, John and Tommy were finished. They had to have King Benny's help in one way or another. Firstly, he had to get the word out to John and Tommy's crew in Hell's Kitchen to leave Michael alone. Once they found out he took the case against his friends, he was a marked man.

King Benny informed Shakes that the "suits at the bar" changed their minds about testifying and that Michaels questions to the Salinas' were aimed at discrediting them. But........they still needed a witness to put John and Tommy in another location for the key time.

Shakes met Carol, who never was told of the abuse they suffered at Wilkenson, and together they went to see Father Bobby. Shakes knew that he had to tell Father Bobby every horrible abuse they endured in order to allow him to make a fair decision about being a witness, and he did. Carol stood by and listened, in shock.

During this meeting Shakes showed Marchico pictures of Adam Styler doing actual drug deals. Iron clad evidence that could be used not only to evict him from the police force without pension, but to prosecute him.

Adam Styler was soon going to be in the hands of Internal Affairs, now there were two other former Wilkenson guards to deal with. Ralph Ferguson was a sunday school teacher and Addison worked in the mayor's office. Addison's sexual tastes hadn't changed, he also had a gambling problem and owed a great deal of money.

King Benny knew he had to sell this debt. He decided on someone to whom it would mean a great deal, and to have Addison in his debt. After looking into Addison's current job in the Mayor's office and his deplorable habits, King Benny realized his habits had not changed much from his time as a guard at Wilkenson.

Shakes was deeply worried that Father Bobby would not agree to perjure himself, even for the reasons that he agonized over hearing that night. His boys. Shakes went to light candles and pray and could not help having flashbacks of the abuse he endured at the guards hands, at Wilkenson.

When he attended mass and received Communion one Sunday and looked up, it was into Father Bobby's eyes.

Snyder was incompetent but he could read and Michael was the brains and author of each question he was asking. Michael was prosecutor and defense lawyer during this trial and he was wonderful at both.

As King Benny sat across from this drug lord, Little Caesare, he asked him for $8,000. Little Caesare knew of King Benny's reputation and remembered him from the old days when the Mafia ran Hell's Kitchen. He automatically told his bodyguard to get the $8,000, he respected the King but was curious as to why he asked him for $8,000. King Benny told him that this debt belonged to someone named Addison.

When Little Caesare looked puzzled and asked who Addison was. King Benny replied "he's the man who killed your brother". Little Caesare said he was told by Wilkensons that his younger brother Rizzo had died of pnemounia.

They had lied.

John and Tommy sat in the court watching Michael and their lawyer Danny Snyder and they became more and more confused about what was going on. Michael got up and joked with the jury, established comraderie with them. Snyder seemed forgetful and disoriented most of the time but the questions coming out of his mouth, were brilliant, they thought.

Then they looked up and and heard Michael calling Ralph Ferguson to the stand as a character witness, for the victim, Sean Nokes.

After admitting that he, Ferguson, and also Sean Nokes, were among those guards who were responsible for the mistreatment of boys at the school, he began weeping on the stand. Michael needed to open the door to Wilkenson while at the same time discredit the victim Sean Nokes.

It was done and the judge called the attorneys to the stand. Michael for reprimanded for opening a Pandora's box that the prosecution could not now escape from. Michael humbly bowed his head and took the responsibility for making that mistake.

Once Shakes had told him of the torture and rape that the boys had endured at Wilkenson, as a priest and their mentor he felt that he did not have any choice but to testify. Then Michael rose to cross examine the priest and asked how he had paid for the tickets - he said he always paid in cash.

Father Carillo shocked Michael and therefore, the prosecution, needless to say, John and Tommy who were dumbfounded. That afternoon, King Benny had made sure his bodyguard had placed the priceless stubs in a prayer book on one of the rear pews in Holy Angels.

As they sat around the table they were remembering a happier time. A time when they were all whole, before Wilkenson and life had changed them forever. They never saw each other again after that night.
