Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What film did Bob claim that his brother Doug "had seen 17 times, eh"?

Answer: Return of the Jedi

At one point, Bob says "He saw 'Jedi' 17 times, eh!". What isn't obvious, two decades later, is that "Return of the Jedi" opened in May 1983, while production of "Strange Brew" had wrapped up five months earlier, in December 1982. Not only hadn't the McKenzie brothers seen "Jedi" - but they couldn't refer to it by its full title, since the "Revenge"/"Return" issue was still up in the air while they were filming.
2. What is the name of the brewery where the brothers get a job inspecting beer bottles?

Answer: Elsinore Brewery

When Bob & Doug drive up to the Brewery in their van, they clearly see a road sign that shows "Elsinore Brewery" to the left and the "Canadian Institute for the Criminally Insane" to the right. In addition, Max von Sydow, who played the Brew Meister in this movie, was also in the film "The Seventh Seal" (1957).

In that film he and his squire were heading towards the village of Elsinore, but decided not to because the plague was there.
3. What is Bob and Doug's last name?

Answer: McKenzie

Bob & Doug McKenzie, or the McKenzie Brothers as they are sometimes called, got their start as characters on the sketch comedy show "SCTV" in the late 1970s.
4. What is the name of the Brew Meister at the brewery?

Answer: Brew Meister Smith

When the brothers first meet Brew Meister Smith, he is introduced to them by Pam Elsinore while he is taste-testing some of the fresh beer from the large copper vats. He later attempts to "control the world" by adding a secret ingredient to Elsinore beer, which he tests on the inmates of the nearby asylum.
5. The basic plot, as well the name of the brewing company, are references to what well known Shakespearean tragedy?

Answer: Hamlet

The castle in Hamlet was named Elsinore, and the brewery in Strange Brew is named Elsinore Brewery. Hamlet's father was murdered by his (Hamlet's) uncle, and the father of the heir to Elsinore Brewery (Pam Elsinore) was murdered by her uncle. Hamlet's murdered father came back to him as a ghost, and Pam's father came back to her as a ghost.
6. Bob and Doug went to the beer store, claimed that they had found a cockroach in a bottle of Elsinore beer, and demanded free beer.

Answer: False

They actually claimed to find a mouse in a bottle of beer. Apparently, Bob & Doug had made this ruse famous during their "SCTV" sketches and decided to add it to the film as well.
7. How did Bob and Doug survive under water, after their van sunk in the harbor?

Answer: By breathing the air out of empty beer bottles

In one of the funniest scenes of the film, Bob & Doug are shown still sitting in the van under water, after it crashes into the harbor. When the rescue divers approach the door, Bob & Doug can be seen breathing the air from beer bottles floating on the roof of the van.
8. What is the name of Bob & Doug's family dog?

Answer: Hosehead

When Bob and Doug are arguing over the last beer, at the beginning of the film, they refer to the dog as Hosehead. Also, when they drop the glass that contains the last of the beer, you can see the dog's water dish that shows his name as well. At the end of the film, Hosehead dons a Superman cape and flies to Octoberfest to save the day from the dastardly Brew Meister Smith.
9. The directors of this film are also its two main stars. What are their names?

Answer: Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas

Rick and Dave created these characters for the highly acclaimed "SCTV" sketch comedy show. Thus, they were the logical choice to star in and direct the film "Strange Brew".
10. What delectable baked good does Bob use to bribe the secretary at the brewery, to get her to tell them more about Claude and Pam Elsinore?

Answer: A jelly donut

Sensing that the overweight secretary may respond more readily to a donut bribe rather than a monetary one, Bob & Doug's intution paid off and they got the information that they were seeking.
