When it is discovered that the sun has what is called a "Q-Ball" (an unstable nucleus that causes the other matter in the sun to stop working), Earth sends a team to re-ignite the sun so it will stay shining. The ship sent is the Icarus 2, named after its sister ship Icarus, that failed to complete the mission.

Answer: Kaneda

Captain Kaneda leads the crew of Icarus 2, while Harvey is second in command, Mace is the ship's engineer and Corazon in the ship's botanist.
Kaneda looks out for his crew and is always the first to volunteer for dangerous assignments and tasks. This eventually leads to his death.

Trey is the ship's navigator and is a regular down-to-earth guy. When the crew decides to alter the ship's course to investigate a distress signal, Trey fails to properly re-adjust the shields to protect them from the sun and feels directly responsible for Kaneda's resulting death.

Cassie tells the rest of the crew that Mercury will be orbiting by the sun. It is seen as a small black dot.

Kaneda is killed when he and Capa go outside to repair the ship's shield. Capa returns to the safety of the shield while Kaneda fixes the damages. He completes the job but doesn't have enough time to return.

Cliff Curtis plays him. The ship's doctor Searle is a fun loving man who is fascinated with the sun, often sitting in the bright light emitted by it, just so he can feel "engulfed in light".

After Pinbacker boards the ship he starts to sabotage Icarus 2, mainly stopping the engine coolant systems. Mace discovers this and jumps into the freezing coolant to fix the engines. He succeeds in restoring the engines, but his foot is caught in the coolant and he dies from hypothermia.

It is said that all of Earth's fissile material has been mined for the two Icarus ships, making the ships the Earth's last hope. This is said in Capa's monologue at the beginning of the film.

The crew of Icarus 2 find the first ship just several hundred kilometers from the end of the mission.
Pinbacker sneaks aboard the Icarus 2 while Harvey, Searle, Capa and Mace explore the first Icarus ship. Pinbacker releases the air lock, which is indirectly responsible for the deaths of Harvey and Searle.
Pinbacker claims that he is doing "God's Will" by disrupting the mission and wiping out humanity. He is homicidal and crazed.

When Cassie asks Capa if he is scared about the mission, he replies
"When a stellar bomb is triggered, very little will happen at first - and then a spark, will pop into existence, and it will hang for an instant, hovering in space and then, it will split into two, and those will split again, and again, and again... detonation beyond all imaging - the big bang on a small scale. - a new star born out of a dying one...
