Answer: Bruce Brown

Bruce Brown directed six other surf films before "The Endless Summer". He also writes, edits and photographs most of his films. He is also an avid surfer himself.
2. Which of these surfers was one of the stars of the film?

Answer: Robert August

Robert August was eighteen when he filmed "The Endless Summer". He continued a life of surfing and eventually opened his own surf board shop, making and selling high quality, hand-crafted surf boards. Robert August also appears in "The Endless Summer 2".
3. Which of these surfers also starred in the film?

Answer: Mike Hynson

A great surfer of the 60's, Mike grew up in California. Mike, like Robert, designs and shapes surfboards and still surfs. Mike appeared in the 1972 film "Rainbow Bridge".
4. Which continent was the first stop for the surfers on their trip?

Answer: Africa

The two surfers visited both Northern and Southern Africa. They found a perfect wave at a place called Cape St. Francis, on the west coast of Africa. They also were able to see some interesting animals and introduce surfing to people that had never seen it before.
5. What animals did they NOT see in Africa?

Answer: Rhinos

At least, they didn't show any rhinos in the film. Robert and Mike tried to pet zebras, but they ran away.
6. What line did many of the Australians keep repeating when they couldn't find great surf?

Answer: "You should have been here yesterday."

According to Bruce's narration, all surfers say this, that the surf was better yesterday. Robert and Mike finally counter with stories of the great surf in Hawaii, specifically Waiamea Bay.

Answer: no

Everywhere they went, Robert and Mike were told there was no place to surf in Tahiti. Yet they found three great places, "El Stumpo", "Ins and Outs" and "The Other Spot".

Answer: South America

At the time of "The Endless Summer", there were few places to surf, and South America was not one of them. Today, there are great surfing spots in South America, such as Costa Rica and Rapa Nui, to name a couple.

The Sandals were originally known as the Twangs, a group formed by Walter Georgis and his brother Gaston. They were joined by John Blakeley, John Gibson and Danny Brawner and became The Sandells. The changed their name to The Sandals to better fit the mood of "The Endless Summer". They were the first surf-rock group to score a surf film.

Answer: false

Bruce Brown did win an Oscar for Best Documentary for his film "On Any Sunday". "The Endless Summer" won a National Film Preservation Board, USA Award in 2002, almost 40 years after its release.
