Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lisbeth and her first guardian, Holger Palmgren, enjoy what pastime during their periodic meetings?

Answer: chess

Although he never speaks in the film, we can tell by Lisbeth's attitude and treatment of him that Palmgren has been an effective and understanding guardian to her and that she trusts and respects him. We see her early on preparing to give him a chess book for Christmas and waiting for him to meet her.

When the meeting falls through and she cannot contact him she goes to his home and arguably saves his life at the time of his stroke. Later we see them playing chess as Palmgren works to rehabilitate and Lisbeth updates him on what she has been doing ("I made a friend.").
2. Lisbeth's relationship with her next guardian, Nils Bjurman, is far from ideal; and she is forced to take brutally creative action to deal with his abuse and exploitation. What does she not require him to do, in order to avoid internet exposure and even death?

Answer: give up his role as a guardian in the welfare system

The passages between Lisbeth and Bjurman, who is played in the film by Yorick van Wageningen, are tough to watch. Lisbeth manages to subdue, restrain, and punish Bjurman for his treatment of her. She threatens to release video proof of his abuse if any harm comes to her or if he does not return control of her money to her and file regular positive progress reports to the authorities about her.

She then threatens to kill him if she ever finds him with another woman and follows up that threat with a horrible reminder.

At no time does she tell him to abandon his guardian's role: indeed, she needs him to continue as such so that she can use him to regain her freedom.
3. Lisbeth's boss at the security company, Dragan Armansky, is a caring man who respects her privacy and values her skills.

Answer: True

Armansky considers Lisbeth one of the best researchers he has ever had and does his best to protect her ("She's had a rough life: can we please not make it any rougher?"), although he does help Mikael Blomkvist find Lisbeth to begin their professional association. In the film Armansky is played by Goran Visnjic.
4. Lisbeth embarks on a research trip for Blomkvist to learn more about the victims of the mysterious killer. Why does she tell the first police investigator she wants information from such an old, unsolved case?

Answer: "It interests me."

This whole passage in the film is very well-done and mesmerizing to watch, giving us a detailed sense of Lisbeth's skills. It refers back to Blomkvist's conversations 1) with Armansky about Lisbeth and 2) with Lisbeth when he comes to her apartment: ("He says you only take on cases that interest you." "I'm going to tell you a story, and if it interests you, maybe you'll decide to help.") Kudos to the actors who play the various police officers. Small roles, but memorably presented.
5. After presenting Blomkvist with a raft of detailed information on the murders, Lisbeth studies the photographic evidence he has assembled on his computer concerning Harriet Vanger at the parade and is impressed with how he was able to synthesize the still photos of the parade into a film-like narrative. Almost immediately she notices something to investigate that he has missed in one of the frames. What is it?

Answer: a woman taking photos which might show what frightened Harriet from across the street

The information Blomkvist later discovers in the woman's photograph helps solve some of the murders; but it ultimately poses more questions which lead to stunning revelations.
6. When Mikael is wounded by a gunshot, what does Lisbeth use to help treat his injuries?

Answer: vodka and dental floss

At Mikael's insistence Lisbeth uses the vodka to sterilize the wound above his eye and the needle and floss she uses to sew it up. He settles for drinking the vodka.
7. Lisbeth saves Mikael from the killer, who then flees. As she prepares to give chase, what does she ask Mikael?

Answer: "May I kill him?"

Her question shows how much Lisbeth has come to view Mikael as her partner and how willing she is to take cues from him on how to proceed in this matter. At one time she would not have hesitated to act on her own (witness her treatment of Bjurman in Question #2). But now she consults Mikael, even in this time-critical situation.

The ensuing chase is very exciting; but its resolution further complicates the investigation into the ultimate fate of Harriet.
8. Lisbeth secretly travels to Zurich in disguise to plant information which will implicate Hans-Erik Wennerstrom in the murders and the disappearance of Harriet.

Answer: False

Lisbeth does travel to Zurich in a great blonde wig, stylish clothes, and with tattoos concealed; but her purposes are 1) to manipulate Wennerstrom's finances to make it look like he was trying to abscond with company money, and 2) to appropriate at least some of the money for herself. No one knows she does this: she borrows money for the trip from Mikael but tells him it's to make a "safe, smart investment".
9. How does Lisbeth present the leather jacket she buys as a Christmas present for Mikael Blomkvist?

Answer: She throws it into the trash when she sees Mikael leaving his apartment with Erika Berger.

Lisbeth's solitary retreat on her motorcycle from behind Mikael's apartment building, while he and Erika cheerfully leave from the front entrance, sums up her isolation from the world and the ways in which events have thwarted even her tentative efforts to re-enter it.
10. Which actress plays Lisbeth in the film?

Answer: Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara is an American actress descended from two of the National Football League's royal families: the Rooneys of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Maras of the New York Giants. She began her acting career in a series of teen roles and made her breakthrough (and intro to David Fincher) in only a few memorable scenes as Mark Zuckerberg's onetime girlfriend in 2010's "The Social Network". Her performance as Lisbeth earned Rooney an Oscar nomination.
