Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why were the four children staying at Professor Kirke's mansion in Coombe Halt?

Answer: They were evacuated because of the bombing.

The opening scenes of the movie show how horrible life was for everyone during the Battle of Britain, in the Second World War. Many children were evacuated to country homes, where they would be at less risk from falling bombs. Families being asked to provide shelter for these children seldom had any choice in the matter.
2. During a game of hide and seek, Lucy was the first to find her way into Narnia through the back of the wardrobe. She met up with the Faun Tumnus, who offered her a cup of tea, and possibly some sardines at his house. Once there, how did Tumnus lull Lucy to sleep?

Answer: by playing a lullaby on his pipes

While Lucy was drinking her tea, Tumnus played a Narnian lullaby on his wonderful pipes. While listening and watching magical figures dance among the flames, Lucy's eyes got heavier and heavier, and soon she was asleep.
3. Tumnus had intended to kidnap Lucy and turn her in to the White Witch, as he was supposed to do with any human. He was obviously feeling very guilty about this when he told Lucy of what he planned to do. What did Lucy say that helped him change his mind and let her go?

Answer: 'I thought you were my friend!'

Although Tumnus initially intended to follow the Queen's edict, he obviously did not feel good about what he was supposed to do. Lucy's simple appeal to his good nature had a big influence in giving him the courage to defy the Queen.
4. Initially no one believed Lucy's story about Narnia, and even after Edmund had also visited there, he pretended to disbelieve. One afternoon all four children hid in the wardrobe, finally finding the entrance to Narnia at the back. Why did they go into the wardrobe to hide?

Answer: They were hiding from the housekeeper.

The four children were playing cricket on the lawn of the mansion, when Edmund hit a ball through one of the old windows. They went inside to see the damage, and heard the housekeeper coming to investigate. Since they were afraid of her temper, they chose to run away from her.

She followed them, forcing them to either face her, or enter the wardrobe. This time the wardrobe yielded the entranceway to Narnia, even though it had been closed off the last time that Susan and Peter had checked.
5. After finding that Tumnus' house had been destroyed, they were befriended by Mr. Beaver and taken to his home. While eating dinner there, they were beset upon by wolves, and escaped through a secret tunnel. They started making their way to the stone table where rumour had Aslan amassing an army. When the Queen learned of this, she set off in fast pursuit. What kind of animals pulled her sleigh, and how many were there?

Answer: six white reindeer

When Edmund first met the Queen, only four white reindeer pulled her sleigh. It was during this scene that she fed him hot chocolate and Turkish Delight and coaxed him to bring his brother and sisters back. When she set off for the stone table, there were six white reindeer pulling her sleigh, presumably because more speed was needed. Edmund was also present in the sled, but he was bound and treated like a prisoner, and not plied with treats.
6. When they were at the Beavers' home, Edmund left to find the Queen, expecting to be treated like a prince. He was not given the welcome he expected, but was chained and thrown in her dungeon instead. Who was in the cell next to him?

Answer: Tumnus the faun

Edmund was dismayed when he realized who his cell mate was, after sharing some of his dinner with him. When the Queen came down, she made sure that Tumnus knew that he had been arrested because Edmund had betrayed him, when he'd told her that Tumnus had helped Lucy. Edmund obviously felt guilty about this, even though he hadn't realized what he was doing when he told the Queen that.
7. After Edmund rejoined his family, the Queen came looking for him. She claimed that according to the deep magic, every betrayer belonged to her and announced her intention of killing Edmund. Aslan offered to engage in a duel with the witch, with Edmund's life offered as the prize to the winner.

Answer: False

Aslan offered himself as a sacrifice, in exchange for Edmund's life and the Queen, anxious to get rid of the threat of Aslan forever, agreed. What the Queen did not bargain on was the fact that the ancient magic allowed for something like this. Whenever anyone of pure soul, who had not commited any crime, offered himself voluntarily in sacrifice, then the stone table would crack, and the death would not be permanent.
8. How did Aslan restore life to the creatures that the Queen had petrified?

Answer: He breathed warmth into them.

After coming back to life on the stone table, Aslan took Susan and Lucy to the Queen's castle, where he breathed life into everyone the Queen had petrified with her wand, including Tumnus. These creatures then headed back to the battle near the stone table where they provided reinforcements for the outnumbered army, being led by Peter.
9. Who placed the crowns on the heads of the four siblings, while Aslan introduced them to the people of Narnia?

Answer: Tumnus

While Aslan introduced the new queens and kings of Narnia as; Lucy the Valiant, Susan the Gentle, Edmund the Just and Peter the Magnificent, Tumnus placed a small crown on each of their heads. This was done at the palace of Cair Paravel, where the new kings and queens sat upon the four thrones, fulfilling the prophecy.
10. After many years had passed, Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter were riding their horses in pursuit of the white stag. What familiar landmark did they happen across, that marked the entrance to the back of the wardrobe?

Answer: the lamppost

It was under this very lamppost that Lucy first met Tumnus. Seeing it again sparked a memory of Spare Oom, which was how Tumnus interpreted her trying to name the room where the wardrobe had been located. They set off to explore, and found themselves returning through the back of the wardrobe into the mansion.
