Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Marty McFly first rides a skateboard in the chase scene in "Back To The Future", which film is advertised on the marquee of the Essex cinema in Hill Valley?

Answer: Cattle Queen of Montana

"Cattle Queen of Montana" is a 1954 movie with Barbara Stanwyck as Sierra Nevada Jones and the then-future 40th US President Ronald Reagan, honing his acting skills as hired gunman Farrell. The role was initially turned down by Robert Mitchum.

Whilst the other titles may possibly be considered more in keeping with the scene, "Hell Bent for Leather" and "Inherit the Wind" were 1960 productions and "The Great Race" first appeared in 1965. The action in "Back To The Future" takes place in 1955.

2. In which western movie did this conversation take place on the way to Boot Hill? Vin Tanner, "Where you from?" Chris Adams, "Dodge, you?" Vin Tanner, "Tombstone."

Answer: The Magnificent Seven

In "The Magnificent Seven" Vin Tanner (Steve McQueen) says "Where you from?" to Chris Adams (Yul Brynner) who says "Dodge, you?" to Vin Tanner, who says "Tombstone." to Chris Adams while they are both riding on a hearse.

This is at the start of the 1960 movie "The Magnificent Seven", before Chris Adams recruits six more gunfighters to protect a Mexican village from the bandit Calvera, played by Eli Wallach. The magnificent seven are James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner, Horst Buchholz, Brad Dexter, Steve McQueen and Robert Vaughn.

3. Which movie was about an Olympic sports team?

Answer: Cool Runnings

"Cool Runnings" is a 1993 movie staring John Candy, Doug E. Doug, Malik Yoba, Rowle D. Lewis and Leon Robinson. The movie is very loosely based on the story of the Jamaican National Bob Sled Team at the 1988 Olympics held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Most of the characters and events in the movie were a fictionalization. The fact that Jamaica had bob sled teams in that Olympics was fact.

"A League of Their Own" is a 1992 movie starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell. This movie tells the story of the first year of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. The real League was organized in 1943 and continued until 1954.

"Rudy" was a 1993 movie about Daniel Ruettiger, nicknamed Rudy, who's greatest wish was to play football for Notre Dame. The role of Rudy was played by Sean Astin.

"Field of Dreams" is a 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, a farmer who hears a voice telling him to turn one of his corn fields into a baseball diamond. The film also stars James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta and Amy Madigan.

4. "E.T. phone ...", Not home but where would he have to phone if he wanted to contact Elliott's recently-departed father in the 1982 Spielberg classic "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial"?

Answer: Mexico

Elliott's father has recently departed to Mexico, presumably with his new girlfriend. When Elliott's family don't take his claims seriously, he laments that his dad would believe him. His mother, played by Dee Wallace, suggests that he call his father and tell him. Elliott replies that he can't as his father is in Mexico with Sally. The awkward ensuing silence is broken by little sister Gertie (7-year-old Drew Barrymore) asking "Where's Mexico?"

Later, after Elliott goes missing overnight, Gertie states "My father's in Mexico." as her less-than-helpful comment to a police offer's line of questioning into reasons for Elliott's disappearance. Cue second awkward silence. "E.T." is the highest-grossing film of the 1980s.

5. From Persia to New York. On which island are The Warriors invited to "Come out to play-ee-ay" after reaching their 'home turf' at the end of their arduous nocturnal journey?

Answer: Coney Island

Having fought their way through various attacks, ambushes and traps, the remaining gang members of The Warriors finally make it back from Van Cortlandt Park to Coney Island whereupon the leader of The Rogues taunts the Warriors into a showdown in Walter Hill's 1979 film "The Warriors".

The film has its roots in Xenophon's c370BCE book "Anabasis", which translates as "The March Up Country", wherein a group of soldiers endure dangers and hardships on their flight from Sardes in Persia to reach the relative safety of the Black Sea. This in turn inspired Sol Yurick to write the novel "The Warriors" upon which the film is based.

The excellent soundtrack includes "Nowhere to Run" by Arnold McCuller and Joe Walsh's "In the City".

Coney is a type of rabbit and whilst there is no concensus on the origin of the name of Coney Island, County Sligo in Ireland also has a Coney Island named after the many rabbits there.

8. Which actor who has played King Philip II of Spain, King Lear and King Charles VI of France won the Academy Award for Best Actor playing a councillor to Henry VIII?

Answer: Paul Scofield

Paul Scofield played Sir Thomas More, councillor to Henry VIII and Lord High Chancellor of England in, "A Man For All Seasons" (1966). It starred Orson Welles, Robert Shaw, John Hurt, Wendy Hiller, Susannah York, Leo McKern and Nigel Davenport.

David Paul Scofield was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, in 1922. He left school in 1939 at the age of seventeen and began working at the Croydon Repertory Theatre. 9. The movie "Yours, Mine and Ours" (1968), was based on a true story. A widower named Frank Beardsley, with 10 children, married a widow with 8 children. Her surname was one of the cardinal directions. What was her surname?

Answer: North

Helen North married Frank Beardsley in 1961. She wrote a book about the family's experiences, "Who Gets the Drumstick?" which caught the attention of Lucille Ball, whose production company made the 1968 movie. A good old fashioned feel good movie, it stared Lucille Ball as Helen North and Henry Fonda as Frank Beardsley. The 2005 remake, staring Rene Russo as North and Dennis Quaid as Beardsley, strayed a great deal from the original and got mixed reviews.
North and Beardsley had 2 children together, bringing the total to 20.

In 2013, Tom North, son of Helen North, wrote the book "True North - The Shocking Truth About "Yours, Mine and Ours"" describing a very different life than the Hollywood dream. He claimed Beardsley was very abusive. The original North children support Tom's version while the original Beardsley children claim it isn't true.
