Robert E. Lee is portrayed as the general facing the great decision of whether to retreat or whether to continue attacking. He chooses the latter. James Longstreet strongly disagrees with Lee's plan of attack throughout the entire film. Chamberlain is a colonel in the Union Army and, when his regiment runs out of ammunition, he orders a counter-attack that is successful.

Joshua L. Chamberlain is a Union Colonel commanding the 20th Maine Regiment of Volunteers. On July 2, 1863, he and his men successfully defend Little Round Top against charging Confederates. Jeff Daniels also stars as Chamberlain in "Gods and Generals".

James Longstreet is a Confederate General who tries to persuade General Lee not to carry out the attack on July 3. Longstreet favors defensive warfare, and is opposed to a charge over open ground. Lee does not change his mind, and a disastrous defeat for the Confederates follows. Tom Berenger also plays Rembrandt Macy in "True Blue".

Robert E. Lee orders this disastrous charge on the third day at Gettysburg. Longstreet and others strongly disagree with the strategy, but must carry out their orders, sending thousands to their deaths.

Ted Turner, for a brief moment in the film, portrays this Confederate colonel who dies during Pickett's Charge on July 3. Ted Turner was also the producer of the film. He is America's largest private landowner, owning approximately two million acres. In 1991, Turner became the first media figure to be named "Time Magazines" Man of the Year. Turner also received the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal for Humanitarianism.

Michael Shaara wrote "The Killer Angels" from which "Gettysburg" was taken. Kilrain has a line in the film about men being "killer angels". This is the only reference to the book's title.

Heth has a relatively minor role as a general who commands some Confederate troops during the first day of fighting at Gettysburg. He unwisely, and against orders, chooses to attack a the Federal Army, led at the time by General Buford. Heth is rebuked by Lee for taking this action.

It is General Pickett who commands the attack on the third day at Gettysburg. He is thrilled with the opportunity to command, but ends the day depressed and grieved over the loss of men. Stephen Lang plays Pickett. He also stars in the prequel to "Gettysburg", called "Gods and Generals", but not as Pickett. He plays Stonewall Jackson in that film.

Answer: Cooper Huckabee

Cooper Huckabee has also portrayed the marshall in "Urban Cowboy" and Ernie in "Night Eyes". His character in "Gettysburg" is a rather obscure spy used by General Longstreet.

Kemper is one of Pickett's brigadier generals, and is mortally wounded during Pickett's charge. This actor, Royce D. Applegate, plays Dutch Doogan in "Seabiscuit" and Walter in "Talking in Your Sleep".
