The Thin Red Line Trivia Quiz

I don't usually go for war movies but this one's amazing! Based on the book by James Jones and with one of the best ensemble casts ever put together, this is a must-see movie. I've seen it a few times now, so I hope the questions aren't too tough.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the First Sergeant of C Company?

Answer: Welsh

Bell and Tella are Privates while Fife is a Corporal.
2. Who played the First Sergeant of C Company?

Answer: Sean Penn

Yup, it was Sean Penn. And he was terrific in it! The others all played other characters in the movie.
3. Who played Private Witt, one of the central characters?

Answer: Jim Caviezel

It was indeed the magnificent Jim Caviezel! Although this movie really is an ensemble piece, Witt would seem to be the main focal character and, in my humble opinion, the hero of the movie.
4. How long, according to the First Sergeant at the beginning of the movie, had Witt been in the army?

Answer: Six years

And, to Welsh's dismay, Witt still kept going AWOL.
5. What killed Sergeant Keck?

Answer: A grenade

He went to pull a grenade from his belt but accidentally grabbed it by the pin, leaving the active grenade still in his belt. Luckily, before it went off, he flung himself against the ground, taking the force of the explosion and saving the lives of the men around him at the time.
6. Who played Sergeant Keck?

Answer: Woody Harrelson

Certainly a far cry from his days serving behind the bar in 'Cheers'!
7. Who did Witt accompany on the fateful skirmish towards the end of the movie?

Answer: Coombs and Fife

And 'fateful' would seem to be the right word for it. As far as we learn from the movie, only one of the three returns.
8. What did Bell's wife do?

Answer: She had an affair

Not only did she have an affair, she also wrote and asked Bell for a divorce! And the only thing that had been keeping him going up to that point had been the thought of returning to her.
9. Who replaced Captain Staros as the Commanding Officer of C Company?

Answer: Bosche

Played by George Clooney. He's only on screen for the one scene which lasts just a minute or two, but he's pretty good, nevertheless.
10. How many Academy Awards was 'The Thin Red Line' nominated for?

Answer: 7

And it didn't win one! Not one! 'Shakespeare In Love' beat it to best movie and Steven Spielberg (for 'Saving Private Ryan') beat Terrence Malick to Best Director. Oh well, all's fair in love and war, I guess.
