Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Throughout the entire movie, the British Intelligence Agency was called by quite a different name. What was it called?

Answer: The Circus

In the beginning we met Control, the man who ran the Circus. In a late night meeting with Jim Prideaux they discussed the discovery of a mole in the Circus. It was never directly revealed to the audience why it was called that, but the term "Circus" was used through the rest of the film by every character.
2. The movie mostly revolved around one man named George Smiley (Gary Oldman). For almost 18 minutes into the movie, Smiley did not speak a word. What was the first thing he said when he finally spoke?

Answer: "I am retired, Oliver."

In the opening scenes of the movie, Control was fired from the Circus. He took Smiley with him, as Smiley had lost his job at the Agency as well. We then followed Smiley through a day where he swam and had an eye exam. When he was finally approached by some higher up named Oliver Lacon (Simon McBurney) and asked to help find the mole in their Agency, his response was, " I am retired, Oliver."
3. When Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) was shot outside a cafe, what country was he in?

Answer: Hungary

Early in the film, Jim took a late night meeting with Control. Control told Jim about a mole inside their agency. Control wanted safe passage of a Hungarian General who wished to defect to the West. This General had information about the mole. Jim was sent to Budapest by Control to bring back the General. Somehow, Jim's cover was blown and he did not get the General, but was caught by the Russians instead.
4. Control (John Hurt) was ousted out of his position within the Agency. Who replaced him as the director?

Answer: Percy Alleline

Percy was promoted to take over for Control. In flashbacks in the movie, we saw how toxic the relationship between Control and Percy had gotten. Somehow, Control was ousted, and Percy rose to replace him. Toby worked under Percy, and really carried no distinction. Roy Bland did not appear very much in the film, but was a suspect in the mole hunt. Bill Haydon showed little interest in being the head of the Circus, and did little to advance himself within their ranks.
5. Smiley spoke of a Russian spy named Karla. Smiley believed that Karla had placed the mole inside the British Agency. Smiley had met Karla years before, and had offered him asylum in England or somewhere in the West. Smiley said that Karla refused, and returned to Russia. However, Karla kept something of Smiley's. What was that item?

Answer: A lighter

Smiley shared with Peter this story about the encounter with Karla. Smiley said he had offered Karla a pack of cigarettes, and loaned him his lighter. The lighter was a gift from his wife and had a personalized inscription - "To George, From Ann with Love".

When Karla refused to be turned, he gave Smiley back the cigarettes (unopened), but he kept the lighter. The lighter made an appearance later in the film as Karla sat in a cafe in Hungary. You never saw Karla's face, but the lighter was on his table with the inscription clearly visible.
6. One of the members of the Intelligence Agency, Percy Alleline (Toby Jones), had an operation going where he traded low level secret information for what he believed was high end Soviet secret information. He used an unidentified Soviet source who had access to the highest reaches inside the Kremlin. What was the name of this operation?

Answer: Witchcraft

Operation Witchcraft was Percy's brain child. He thought he had gold, but ultimately was double crossed by his lack of focus, and his over ambitious nature. He demanded that nobody but himself and his men know the details of the operation. That included his superiors in the Circus. Ultimately, one of his cohorts in the operation would betray him and their country by giving the Soviets top level British secrets instead of the low level information intended.

His cohort was the mole Smiley was sent to search for.
7. Smiley sent Peter Guillam (Benedict Cumberbatch) into the halls of the Agency to retrieve a log book. This required that Peter steal it from the records room; a room where no outside bags were allowed. Smiley had Mendel (the other member of his team) call Peter as Peter was in the records room, so that he would have to come out to take the call. Who did Mendel pose as over the phone when he called Peter at the Agency?

Answer: His mechanic

As Peter came out of the records room to take the call, he had the log book stuffed in his shirt. Mendel went on to explain that the gear box in Peter's car was in need of replacement, and then quoted Peter a price. Unhappy with the price, Peter insisted that the mechanic call "his man" to see about a better price for the part.

This was where Peter asked the person who ran the desk of the records room to give him his bag for a second. As Peter retrieved his address book from his bag, he slipped the file in without being noticed.
8. Ricky Tarr (Tom Hardy) was an agent who had an assignment in Turkey to follow a Russian trade delegate. However, Ricky broke protocol when he left the trade delegate and struck up a relationship with the delegate's wife. She eventually asked Ricky for safe passage to the west, and a new life. What was her name?

Answer: Irina

Irina knew who Ricky worked for, and wanted to speak to his supervisor. Irina also had information about a mole that was placed in the Circus. When Ricky tried to wire this information to his superiors in London, he got such a strange response that he was confused. Shortly after he contacted his superiors, a Russian hit squad raided the headquarters in Turkey, and killed Ricky's other team member. Ricky escaped, and went into hiding. Irina was taken back to Russia despite Ricky's attempt to save her. Ricky would later be used as bait by Smiley to ultimately fish out the mole in the Circus.
9. Throughout the movie, Percy Alleline had a very secret safe house where he debriefed his Russian source. It was so secret that only a select few knew where it was. Even Percy's superiors were left in the dark about its location. Who did Smiley squeeze for the information as to the address of this safe house?

Answer: Toby Esterhase

In the early part of the movie, it was revealed that Toby was found and recruited by Control. Toby was a wanted man, and he got sent to England to work for the Circus. Smiley had figured out that Toby had a hand in Witchcraft, and he decided to squeeze Toby, and threatened to send him back to where he was wanted.

After being taken to a runway, Toby realized that Smiley's intent was to send him back to where he came from. Distraught by the idea of leaving England, Toby told Smiley what he wanted.

This was the last we saw of Toby, so it was not clear if he was sent back or not.
10. Smiley went to see a woman named Connie Sachs (Kathy Burke) who had once worked in the agency too. She ran background checks for all foreign people who were recruited by agents. When it came to a Russian recruit named Polyakov, Connie ran afoul with Percy and Toby. When she discovered something that should have raised suspicions about Polyakov, her concerns were of no interest to Percy. What was it about Polyakov that raised red flags for Connie?

Answer: He was once in the Russian Military.

Connie had footage of a Russian May Day parade in which Polyakov stood with Russian military officers who reviewed the troops. Polyakov was dressed as a civilian, but Connie noticed that an officer leaned over and saluted Polyakov. It was Connie's understanding that Polyakov told British agents that he had not served in the Russian military. Percy would not listen to Connie, mostly because Polyakov was Percy's secret source for Operation Witchcraft.

He had Connie fired instead. Smiley deduced that Polyakov worked for Karla.
11. We eventually learned that Ricky Tarr was working under the supervision of Peter Guillam. Ricky resurfaced in England after the debacle in Turkey and sought out Smiley. Eventually, Peter met up with Ricky face to face. What was the first thing Peter did with Ricky?

Answer: Punched him in the face

While Peter was stealing records from the Circus, Ricky laid low under the watch of Smiley. Peter was not told of Ricky's presence in England in the event he was caught in the records room. When Peter came back with the stolen log book, he saw Ricky for the first time. Peter proceeded to punch Ricky in the face and attempted to beat him up.

He was quickly restrained. Peter believed Ricky was the mole, but he was not.
12. Bill Haydon (Colin Firth) eventually got caught as the mole who gave high level secrets to the Russians. Bill confessed to Smiley that Karla knew he would find the mole. To that end, Karla suggested that Bill do what to hinder Smiley's focus?

Answer: Have an affair with Smiley's wife Ann

Ricky Tarr was wanted by the Russians after he escaped from Turkey with knowledge of the mole inside the Circus. Smiley used Ricky as bait to flush Bill out. From early on in the film, we were made aware of Ann's affair with Bill Haydon. Two flashbacks showed Anne with Bill at the Christmas Party, and a later flashback showed Bill at Smiley's house as he tried to put his shoes back on without alerting Smiley, who had just arrived home. Smiley never appeared to confront Ann, and she was absent from Smiley through out the film.

In the end, as Bill waited to be sent to Russia, he confided in Smiley that the affair was not personal, but that Karla had suggested it be done to compromise Smiley's focus on the mole hunt.
13. Jim Prideaux survived his ordeal in which he was shot outside a cafe. What kind of job did he take afterwards?

Answer: School teacher

After his incident in Hungary, Jim was seen pulling a travel trailer with his car to a boarding school. He was going to teach at a boy's academy. He made quite an impression on the boys the first day when he lit the fire in the fireplace, and an owl flew into the room from the chimney. Jim rolled up some papers, and struck the owl down in mid flight.

He then twisted its neck to kill it. The boys sat in their seats stunned by what they just witnessed. In a flashback, we saw that Jim survived the shooting, but was taken into custody by the Russians, and was shown being fiercely interrogated by their agents.

He was eventually traded back to the West, and then got his teaching gig.
14. Toby Esterhase (David Dencik) was a recruit who was originally brought in by Control. Toby was a wanted man where he came from. Where did Control find Toby before he decided to recruit him?

Answer: An art gallery in Vienna

In a flashback, we saw Control in an argument with Percy about the information that Operation Witchcraft had gathered. Control disputed its validity, buy Percy was not about to divulge any more information about his sources. Toby tried to interject a comment in support of Percy, but Control pounced on him too. Control reminded Toby, "When I found you, you were starving in an art gallery in Vienna." The three-way argument ended when Control threw everybody out of the meeting room.
15. At the end of the movie, there was a montage played of the events that followed the capture of the mole. Which of these events was NOT shown in the montage?

Answer: Ricky reunited with Irina

Sadly, Irina was executed after she was taken back to Russia. Ricky had begged Smiley to trade for her with the Russians, but nobody in the Circus knew that Irina's fate had been sealed. She was killed while Jim Prideauz was in the custody of the Russians, and he witnessed the execution.

As Bill Haydon stood outside his fenced-in holding cell, Jim Prideaux approached from out of a wooded area and shot him from distance. Bill was dead. After being separated for all of the film, Smiley returned home to see Anne as she waited for him in their kitchen.

The very last part of the montage showed Smiley as he returned to the Circus for the first time since he walked out with Control. He made his way back to meeting room we saw at the beginning, and he sat at the front of the table as Control had done before.
