Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born Shimon Hayut, the man Netflix dubbed The Tinder Swindler in its 2022 documentary changed his name to Simon Leviev as a young man in order to associate himself with a rich mogul, but where was he born?

Answer: Israel

Simon Leviev was born in Bnei Brak in Israel in 1990. His father was a rabbi who officiated for an Israeli airline. He later moved to New York, but changed his name to associate himself with a Russian-Israeli businessman which, presumably, was intended to give him credibility as the millionaire he was posing to be.
2. Simon Leviev presented himself as the son of a rich Russian-Israeli businessman named Lev Leviev. Lev has a distinct nickname, earned from his years in a specific trade. What is his nickname?

Answer: The Diamond King

Lev Leviev is a diamond mogul and investor who founded Africa Israel Investments, a conglomerate that invests heavily in diamond mining and resale. His net worth in 2018, according to Forbes, was over US$ 1 billion which made him a very useful name to be able to quote for Simon Leviev.
3. The Tinder Swindler used the popular dating app to meet women, who he charmed and later conned out of vast sums of money. One of his victims, Cecilie Fjellhøy, told the documentary filmmaker that on their first date, he flew her where on a private jet?

Answer: Bulgaria

After being flown to Bulgaria from London on their first date, Cecilie was drawn into the story that Simon Leviev told of his vast wealth and lavish lifestyle. She was later defrauded of thousands of dollars as a result.
4. Who was Piotr, the man who assisted Leviev in his schemes and of whom Leveiv shared pictures with his victims following an alleged assassination attempt?

Answer: Bodyguard

After a few weeks of portraying himself as a rich businessman and heir, Leviev would claim that his "enemies" were looking for him and that he needed to flee. He would then send pictures of Piotr bruised and bleeding from an apparent attack and state that he was the subject of an assassination attempt.
5. Victim Pernilla Sjöholm developed a platonic relationship with the Tinder Swindler, but he still defrauded her of thousands of dollars. Where was she living when he first matched with her on Tinder?

Answer: Stockholm

Simon Leviev swindled women across multiple countries. His lavish lifestyle meant that he was often travelling (usually paid for by one of his victims) and he told his victims that he travelled a lot for business reasons. This mean that he was able to visit each victim only infrequently, maintaining his lifestyle as well as their trust.
6. What did Simon Leviev often ask his victims to obtain in their own names and to allow him to use in order to provide him with money when he was travelling?

Answer: Credit cards

Leviev asked his victims to take out credit cards in their own names and to let him use them. he stated that this was to prevent "his enemies" from finding him through his own credit card use and/or because his own cards were not working following dangerous enemies' actions against him. One of his victims, Cecilie Fjellhøy, provided him with an American Express card on which e ran up debts of over US$200,000.
7. What did the Tinder Swindler often tell his victims he received in the mail which represented a threat to his life from "his enemies"?

Answer: Bullets

Though he never really provided any detail about his alleged "enemies", the Tinder Swindler would tell his victims that they were "after him" and that he needed money to be provided to him in someone else's name so that he could stay under the radar. He told his victims that the enemies sent him bullets in the mail which were a clear threat.
8. To gain her trust, Leviev invited Pernilla Sjöholm on a trip with him and his new girlfriend, Polina, which he paid for with money defrauded from another victim, Cecilie Fjellhoy. Where did they go?

Answer: Mykonos, Greece

Pernilla did not know about Cecilie and accepted the invitation to Mykonos. She believed that the cash Leviev was spending there was all his own. Whilst they were in Mykonos, Cecilie had invited Simon to visit her family in Oslo but he declined, stating that his security team had told him not to go due to danger from "his enemies".
9. After being defrauded out of thousands of dollars by Simon Leviev, Dutch victim Ayleen Charlotte learned of his deceit through a newspaper. What belongings of Leviev's did she sell and keep the cash?

Answer: Designer clothes

Ayleen Charlotte beat the Tinder Swindler at his own game. After finding out about his lies she decided to continue acting as though she loved him and let him believe she wanted to help him. She offered to sell his designed clothes on eBay and then kept the money for herself to pay off the debts she had incurred whilst with him.
10. At the end of Netflix's documentary about the Tinder Swindler, we learned that Simon Leviev had been arrested in Greece in 2019. But what was he arrested for?

Answer: Passport fraud

Leviev was arrested in Greece in 2019 for passport fraud. He was subsequently extradited to Israel where he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a number of earlier crimes committed there, including fraud, theft and forgery. He only served five months of that sentence as he was released for good behaviour following a Covid-19 initiative to release non-dangerous prisoners and free up space in Israeli prisons.

As at April 2022, he had not been charged with any offence in respect of the three women featured in Netflix's "The Tinder Swindler" documentary.
