Stu's father, Stephen Simmons, played by Kevin Costner, made it back from Vietnam, only to face serious emotional problems after returning home to his wife Lois, daughter Lydia, and of course, his son Stu.

Answer: Elvadine's mood ring.

When Lydia Simmons unknowingly made a racist comment about her smokes to her black friend Elvadine, Elvadine demanded that Lydia return her mood ring. Their friendship was later reconciled when Lydia stood up to their summer school teacher, Miss Strapford, in Elvadine's defense.

She insisted to the teacher that she was going to learn Elvadine's name instead of referring to her as "colored girl", and that Elvadine would also take her seat in the front from then on where she could see.

Answer: She moved all of the black students to the back rows of the classroom.

Shortly after the class started, Miss Strapford moved all of the black students to the back of the room, claiming the need to "put this class into some kind of order". This angered the black students, along with the white students who were not racist, and believed this action to be unfair. Miss Stapford did make a comment to a student about his hearing aid, but it was a black student, not a white one.

Answer: She yelled, "And stop tryin' to look through my dress!"

Mrs. Higgins, the Simmons family's overly paranoid next door neighbor, did indeed angrily tell Mr. Simmons to stop trying to look through her dress. Being the nice man he was, Mr. Simmons ignored this comment and entered his house.

Answer: Miss Strapford

Elvadine said this, among other things, to Miss Strapford when she was falsely accused of talking during her first summer school class. She was referring, sarcastically, to what she planned on writing about for her memoir assignment, using the book "How My Life Is Like a Bowl of Cherries" as a guideline. After this little speech, Lydia stood up for Elvadine, reconciling their friendship.

Answer: The Lipnickies

Lydia, Stu, and their four friends were constantly at "war" with the fiesty Lipnicki kids, a poverty-stricken and mistreated family of children whose father ran the town's largest junkyard.

Answer: Ice cream

Billy's big brothers and sisters found him passed out in the junkyard from eating all the ice cream he bought with his money. In order to make him tell them where he got the money from, they roughly shaved his head.

Answer: He gave it to two of the younger Lipnicki children.

After he saw his father giving the cotton candy to two of the Lipnickis, Stu angrily asked his father why he would do that for the kids he'd just been beaten up by. His father replied, "Because they look like they haven't been given anything in a long time."

Answer: He was crushed when the mine he was working in collapsed, and died later in the hospital.

When the mine he was working in collapsed, Mr. Simmons was determined to save his fellow worker and friend who was stuck under a large piece of rock. He was unable to do so for his best friend in Vietnam. He stayed behind to rescue his friend and the cave collapsed further on him. After several days of struggling for his life in the hospital, he died.

Answer: An angel that looked a lot like Stu helped return him to safety.

Billy Lipnicki climbed to the top of the water tower in order to retrieve the key to Stu's father's padlock from the war. The old roof collapsed on him, and he plunged into the draining water below. After he was rescued from the water and resuscitated, Billy claimed that an angel that looked a lot like Stu, presumably the angel of Mr. Simmons, helped to keep him from drowning in the water tank until help arrived.
