1. "Ruthless People" and "Stella"

"Ruthless People" is a 1986 comedic film. It tells the story of a couple, Ken and Sandy, who hate Sam Stone, a fashion mogul, for stealing their designs and money. They kidnap his wife, Barbara, and try to get a ransom for her. However, they realize that he has about zero interest in getting her back because he has a mistress that he's more interested in and just wanted to kill her anyway to get the insurance money. However, the mistress, Carol, wants to extort Sam for money also, so she sends her lover, Earl, to get some damning evidence. In the end, it all seemingly works out for Ken, Sandy and Barbara.

The 1990 film "Stella" is the third remake of the 1923 film "Stella Dallas". This drama tells the story of a single mother, Stella, who had an affair with a well-to-do man, Stephen, and got pregnant with his baby. Raising her child on her own, Stella does what she needs to do in order to give her daughter, Jenny, everything. However, when Stephen gets back into Jenny's life, things start to get complicated.

These two films have one actress in common - Bette Midler. In "Ruthless People" she plays Barbara Stone, the mogul's wife who gets kidnapped and then gets her revenge on her husband. In "Stella", Midler has the title role.
2. "Sense and Sensibility" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

"Sense and Sensibility" is a novel by Jane Austen which has been remade into a movie several times. The 1995 film was directed by Ang Lee and the screenplay was written by Emma Thompson, and she also starred in the movie. It tells of John, a half-brother who promises to take care of his stepmother and her daughters, but is convinced by his miserly wife Fanny to do no such thing. the three Dashwood daughters, Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret, now have to fend for themselves.

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a cross between a science-fiction and a romance film. It tells of a time when you can have unpleasant memories erased, which is something that Joel wants to do, of his relationship with Clementine. She has already been erased, something that has hurt Joel deeply. However, during the erasing, he realizes that he wants to retain his memories of Clem and hides her in other memories. In the end, the two find each other and are drawn to one another despite not having their original memories.

Kate Winslet, who acts in both of these movies, plays Marianne Dashwood in "Sense and Sensibility", a woman trying to make a life for herself and finally finding love. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" was the first time that Winslet did not feature in a period piece which opened up many opportunities for her.
3. "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Avatar"

"Guardians of the Galaxy" was the tenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Released in 2014, this is an adventure science-fiction film based on the comic book characters of the same name. It follows Peter Quill, self-titled as 'Star-Lord', and his misadventures as a smuggler. He acquires an Orb that everyone in the galaxy seems to want, but along the way forms a crew consisting of Groot, a sentient tree, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, and eventually Gamora as well.

When "Avatar" was released in 2009, it was the cutting edge of film technology. A science-fiction film, it tells of the exploitation of another planet, Pandora, and the native species living there, the Na'vi. In human interaction with them, humans take on an avatar of a local so that they can blend in. That way, Jake Sully is able to learn about the Na'vi and see that they are worth saving.

Zoe Saldana is in both of these films. In "Guardians of the Galaxy" she takes on the role of Gamora, the daughter of Thanos who realizes his evil ways and teams up with Peter Quill. She is Neytiri, daughter of the chief of the Na'vi in "Avatar" and the love interest of Jake Sully.
4. "Race the Sun" and "Swordfish"

"Race the Sun" was a 1996 drama that was loosely based on a true event. Sandra, a new teacher at a Hawaiian school, is sent to teach science even though she is an English teacher. There she meets six students who think of themselves as stupid (or 'lolo') and have to come up with a science fair project. When going to a local fair for ideas, they come up with the idea for a solar-powered car. After a few misadventures, the students build the car and race it successfully. They are then sent to Australia to race in a worldwide solar car event.

"Swordfish" is a crime drama which follows Stanley, an ex-con hacker, who has to work for a mysterious man, Gabriel, and Ginger, a DEA agent who is trying to bring Gabriel down. They want to get Stanley to create a program that will steal money from the US government. However, as the plot progresses, relationships aren't always as they seem and people aren't always who they say they are.

In both films you can see Halle Berry in starring roles. She is Sandra, the high school teacher who believes in her students in "Race the Sun" and she is Ginger, the DEA agent, in "Swordfish".
5. "The Horse Whisperer" and "Lost in Translation"

"The Horse Whisperer" is a 1998 drama that tells the story of a man who can connect with horses. Tom Booker is hired to deal with a horse called Pilgrim and his rider, Grace MacLean, after the two have a terrible accident. Tom manages to mend the relationship between Grace and Pilgrim and also raises questions about her mother, Annie, and her relationship with her husband, Robert.

The 2003 drama "Lost in Translation" tells the story of Bob Harris, an actor who has had better days, who is asked to film a commercial in Japan. It also tells of Charlotte, a young wife and student who is in Japan with her husband, a photographer. Bob and Charlotte form a bond over the few days they are together and they begin to make sense of their lives.

Scarlett Johansson was in both of these films. She played the role of Grace, the teenager who suffered an accident with her horse in "The Horse Whisperer". She was Charlotte in "Lost in Translation", the young wife who questions her choices.
6. "The River Wild" and "The Bridges Of Madison County"

"The River Wild" is a 1994 adventure film which teaches about the strength of family. When Gail wants to take her son Roarke on a whitewater rafting trip on the Salmon River in Idaho, her husband Tom is too busy and says that he will stay behind. However, he joins them at the last moment, and the family also run into three men, Wade, Terry, and Frank, who are also along for the trip. When Frank mysteriously disappears, Terry and Wade join the Hartmans because they have no guide. However, when it turns out that Terry and Wade are escaped robbers, things get ugly and the two convicts pull a gun on the family. However, the Hartmans find family strength and manage to overcome their captors.

"The Bridges Of Madison County" is a 1995 romance film based on a book by Robert James Waller. It tells the story of Francesca Johnson and her brief four-day love affair with photographer Robert Kincaid. He comes to Madison County to take pictures of the famous bridges and meets Francesca who accompanies him to show him where they are. Despite their intense passion, they part ways at the end of the four days and go live their lives.

Meryl Streep plays in both of these movies. In "The River Wild", Streep has the role of Gail Hartman, the mother and the former river guide. In "The Bridges Of Madison County" she is Francesca Johnson opposite Clint Eastwood as Kincaid.
7. "The Next Karate Kid" and "Boys Don't Cry"

"The Next Karate Kid" is the fourth movie in the "Karate Kid" franchise. Released in 1994, it tells of Mr. Miyagi reuniting with the wife of a former commander of his. He also meets her spirited daughter, Julie, who is having trouble coping with the loss of her parents in a car accident. Mr. Miyagi helps out the family by watching over Julie. When she gets mixed up with the wrong crowd, Miyagi helps her get out of it by teaching her discipline of body and mind.

The 1999 biopic "Boys Don't Cry" tells the story of Brandon Teena, a trans man who is trying to live a simple life in Nebraska. He befriends some ex-cons, John and Tom, and some women, Candace and Lana. Lana and Brandon start a relationship and want to move to Memphis together. However, when his past catches up with him, he is subjected to hate crimes and Lana is caught in the middle, torn between her love for Brandon and what Tom and John are trying to make her see. When it all comes to a head, the end is callous and tragic.

Both of these films feature Hilary Swank. "The Next Karate Kid" has Swank in the role of Jenny, the troubled teenager who finds herself through karate. In "Boys Don't Cry", Swank takes on the role of Brandon, the trans man. For her work, Hilary Swank was nominated for an Academy Award.
8. "Kalifornia" and "The Other Sister"

The 1993 thriller "Kalifornia" takes on a similar spin to the television movie "Too Young to Die?" which features some of the same actors. It tells the story of a reporter, Brian, who is researching serial killers. He is travelling in his van for research with his girlfriend Carrie to move to California when they pick up Early and Adele to ride-share the trip with them. Unbeknownst to Brian and Carrie is that Early is a serial killer himself and the trip turns scary when he continues his killing spree and takes Brian and Carrie as hostages.

"The Other Sister" is a 1999 rom-com that tells about Clara, a slightly mentally disabled woman, who meets Danny, a man who has a similar illness to hers. The two fall in love and have to overcome obstacles like income and alcohol in order to make sure their relationship lasts. They also need to break free of Clara's mother, who treats Clara like an embarrassment, in order to achieve independence.

Juliette Lewis plays in both of these films. In "Kalifornia" she has the role of Adele, serial killer Early's girlfriend. In "The Other Sister" Lewis is Clara and her love interest, Danny, is played by Giovanni Ribisi.
9. "Nine Months" and "The Big Lebowski"

"Nine Months" is a 1995 movie about relationships that was directed by Chris Columbus. It tells the story of Samuel and Rebecca, where Samuel is against marriage and enjoys the way the relationship is, and Rebecca wants marriage and children. When Rebecca gets pregnant, they have to reassess what their priorities are if they want to stay together.

The 1998 cult classic "The Big Lebowski" tells the story of 'The Dude', a slacker who applies himself only to bowling, and how he gets mixed up in a kidnapping. When a millionaire's wife gets taken for ransom and 'The Dude' gets involved because the millionaire and he share the same name, things are bound to go sideways. In the end, things do work out, and 'The Dude' is even going to become a father after having impregnated the millionaire's daughter, Maude.

"Nine Months" had Julianne Moore in the role of Rebecca opposite Hugh Grant, in his first Hollywood film, as Samuel. In "The Big Lebowski" Moore has the role of Maude, with Jeff Bridges as 'The Dude'.
10. "Heathers" and "Mermaids"

The 1989 movie "Heathers" is considered a black comedy which follows Veronica Sawyer, a high school student. She is part of a very powerful clique along with three other girls named Heather, but wants to go back to her carefree days. When she meets a new student, J.D., she is attracted to him. As a prank, they decide to give one of the Heathers a fake hangover cure, however, Veronica gives her drain cleaner accidentally (though orchestrated by J.D.) and kills her. J.D. also gets Veronica to kill two boys from the school. When she realizes she is in trouble, Veronica fakes her own death and prevents J.D. from blowing up the school pep rally.

"Mermaids" was a 1993 film directed by Richard Benjamin. It follows the messed up life of Charlotte Flax, her mother Rachel, and her half-sister Kate. Uneducated about relationships and sex, Charlotte begins to explore her urges but gets worried that she may have gone too far. However, when a nearly-tragic accident happens to Kate, this brings Charlotte and Rachel closer together.

Winona Ryder starred in both of these movies. In "Heathers", Ryder played Veronica Sawyer, the tragic heroine alongside Christian Slater as J.D. In "Mermaids", Ryder has the role of Charlotte and her mother, Rachel, is played by Cher.
