Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the opening of this film, what season did Melvin Udall's lady neighbor say it was which made her "oh so happy"?

Answer: tulip

Melvin Udall, the successful novelist, was definitely not liked by his neighbors. He appeared a weird loner who had peculiar ways and his OCD habits probably contributed to their opinion of him. Before the lady said this, she was looking at Melvin and cursing him under her breath.
2. What breed of dog was Simon's dog Verdel?

Answer: Brussels Griffon

Verdel's eyes said it all. The camera angles were wonderful and the dog's expressions spoke to you. Melvin, however decided that he did not want the dog living next door, so he decided to capture him in the hall and throw him down the garbage chute.
3. What university was Dr. Betz's son accepted to?

Answer: Brown

Melvin was devoid of social graces. Not even with his publisher who, by the way, he had just asked a favor of involving her husband, Dr. Betz. She was proud that her son got into Brown, but Melvin could not be bothered and was abrupt and rude to her.
4. What are the two things Melvin Udall said he took away from a man, to be able to write about women so well, in the order he said them?

Answer: reason and accountability

He was a wonderful novelist and mainly his books were about relationships and he excelled in portraying the feelings of women. It was incredible to know him and how he was, and understand how he could so accurately be inside a woman's mind. This receptionist made the mistake of asking him how he was able to do it.
5. What does Melvin bring to Simon's door, when he first begins to show some empathy for his plight?

Answer: chinese soup

Melvin was extremely homophobic and Simon's very existence annoyed him, which he did not, in any way, attempt to hide. Somehow, babysitting Verdel while Simon was in the hospital softened Melvin toward Simon. His heart began to kick in and he did try to help.
6. What channel was Melvin watching on TV when Carol went to his apartment, to tell him that she wasn't going to sleep with him?

Answer: NIK

Carol suspected an ulterior motive when Melvin sent over Dr. Betz to help Spencer, and in turn, Carol. It was difficult to her to understand how Melvin Udall, the person she served breakfast to every day, could be capable of this generosity and not want anything back.

8. When Melvin looks after Verdel, what is the question he asks out loud, when the dog won't eat?

Answer: "Where's the trust?"

Melvin began loving Verdel almost immediately, only he didn't know it himself. He could not get over the fact that the little dog captured his heart.
9. How does Melvin describe how he drives to Frank, Simon's manager?

Answer: like the wind

Frank was committed to another artist and even offered Melvin his convertible in order to take Simon to Baltimore to ask his parents for financial aid. 10. What did Carol find out, when she called home from Baltimore, that made her so happy that she wanted to go out dancing?

11. While in the restaurant in Baltimore, with Carol, what does Melvin tell her he thinks her dress resembles?

Answer: a housedress

12. When Carol asked Melvin why he asked her to come along on the trip to Baltimore, what was one of the reasons he gave her? The reason that caused her to walk out and leave him there in the restaurant...
