Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a 1938, Academy Award winning, biographical drama directed by Norman Taurog. Spencer Tracy starred as Father Flanagan with Mickey Rooney as Whitey Marsh. I tell the true story of Father Flanagan and the help he gives to disadvantaged and delinquent boys. What movie am I?

Answer: Boys Town

Father Edward J Flanagan founded a home that he named Boys Town, as he believed that there was no such thing as a bad boy and he spent his life trying to prove it.

"Boys Town" also stars Henry Hull, Leslie Fenton, and Gene Reynolds, among others. The movie was nominated for five Academy Awards and won two: Best Actor in a Leading Role (Spencer Tracy); and Best Writing, Original Story.

Without consulting Spencer Tracy, MGM issued an announcement that Tracy would donate his Best Actor Oscar for this film to the real Boys Town in Nebraska. Tracy agreed to the donation on the proviso that he keep the original Oscar and another one be struck to be donated. This was done and the inscription read "To Father Flanagan, whose great humanity, kindly simplicity, and inspiring courage were strong enough to shine through my humble effort. Spencer Tracy."

A sequel, "Men of Boys Town" in which Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney reprised their roles, was released in 1941.
2. I am a 1930, Academy Award winning movie based on a book of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. I am considered to be a realistic and harrowing account of warfare in World War I. I tell the story of a group of German schoolboys who are talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War I and of the experiences and tragedies they encounter. What movie am I?

Answer: All Quiet on the Western Front

"All Quiet on the Western Front" was written in German and translated into English. It was directed by Lewis Milestone and starred Louis Wolheim and Lew Ayres.

The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and won two, Outstanding Production and Best Director. This was the first talkie war film to win Oscars.

On the list of American Film Institute's "10 Top 10" in 2008, "All Quiet on the Western Front" ranked number seven in the epic genre, and the film was selected and preserved by the United States Library of Congress' National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Because of the anti-war and perceived anti-German content, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party banned the film from being shown in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s.

A made for television movie of the same name was released in 1979. It starred Richard Thomas and Ernest Borgnine.
3. I am a 1935, swashbuckling, action/adventure directed by Michael Curtiz. I tell the story of a doctor, falsely convicted of treason and sold into slavery. He escaped with friends and they took over a Spanish ship and became the most feared pirates on the Seven Seas! What movie am I?

Answer: Captain Blood

"Captain Blood" starred Errol Flynn (as Peter Blood), Olivia de Havilland, Lionel Atwill, Basil Rathbone, and Ross Alexander. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards but did not win one.

Robert Donat was originally cast as Captain Blood, but because of illness had to turn it down. Leslie Howard, Fredric March, Ronald Colman and Clark Gable were all considered for the role. After Errol Flynn screen-tested, it was decided to cast the unknown Australian actor as Captain Blood. This was the first of eight films made by Warner Brothers starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland.

"Captain Blood" was the first talkie to be based on a novel by the then very popular author Rafael Sabatini. Some of his other novels turned into films were "The Lost King", "Scaramouche", "The Black Swan", and "The Sea Hawk".
4. I am a 1939, crime/film-noir directed by Michael Curtiz. My story is set in Hell's Kitchen and tells of two boyhood friends, one who grows up to be a gangster and the other a priest. What movie am I?

Answer: Angels With Dirty Faces

"Angels With Dirty Faces" stars James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart and Ann Sheridan. It was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Actor (James Cagney); Best Director and Best Writing, Original Story. James Cagney won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor.

This was one of seven movies to feature the Dead End Kids. They made movies from 1935 until 1958 under various names - Dead End Kids, East Side Kids, Little Tough Guys and the Bowery Boys.

James Cagney based his character, Rocky Sullivan, on a man who lived in Cagney's neighbourhood when he was growing up in a tough area on the upper east side of New York City. This man had such mannerisms as hitching up his trousers, jerking his neck and repeatedly saying "Whadda ya hear! Whaddya ya say"! Cagney later said in his autobiography "I did those gestures maybe six times in the picture. That was over thirty years ago - and the impressionists have been doing me doing him ever since."

The film was banned in China, Poland, Denmark and Finland because of a lot of controversy about gangster films at that time.

Director Michael Curtiz made two more films with James Cagney, "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Captains of the Clouds". He later directed Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca". Cagney and Bogart made two other films together "The Oklahoma Kid, and "The Roaring Twenties".

In the "Sesame Street" segment Monsterpiece Theatre, one of the episodes was titled "Monsters With Dirty Faces" which depicted Police officer Grover showing Rocky, the leader of the monster gang, how to wash his face!
5. Directed by William Dieterie and Max Reinhardt, I am a 1935 comedy/fantasy of a play by William Shakespeare. Some of my stars are Ian Hunter, Dick Powell, Ross Alexander, Olivia de Havilland and Jean Muir. My story takes place in a magic forest and revolves around an argument, a Royal wedding, a love triangle and a group of would-be thespians. What movie am I?

Answer: A Midsummer Night's Dream

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" starred, among others, Mickey Rooney as Puck, James Cagney as Bottom the Weaver, Joe E Brown as Flute the Bellows Mender, Hugh Herbert as Snout the Tinker, Victor Jory as Oberon, King of the Fairies and Anita Louise as Titania, Queen of the Fairies.

The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and won two, Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing. This was the first Shakespearean adaption to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Mickey Rooney broke his leg skiing, and in several scenes he was wheeled on a bicycle behind bushes and in other scenes a body double was used. He was 14 years old when he made this movie. The movie was Olivia de Havilland's film debut.

It is thought that the first time "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was performed on stage was in about 1595. It is difficult to establish the chronological order of his plays, but this play was about Shakespeare's twelfth.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" was again made into a movie in 1999. It starred Kevin Kline as Nick Bottom, Michelle Pfeiffer as Titania, Rupert Everett as Oberon, Stanley Tucci as Puck, Calista Flockhart as Helena and Christian Bale as Demetrius.

Answer: A Night at the Opera

"A Night at the Opera" starred Groucho, Chico and Harpo Marx (the Marx Brothers) in another of their madcap, brilliant films. This was the first Marx Brothers film that did not include Zeppo Marx and also their first film with MGM.

On the American Film Institute's 2007 list of "100 Years . . . 100 Movies" this film is rated at number 85.

One very famous scene in this movie was the stateroom scene where a total of fifteen people were all crowded into a very small cabin. Those in the scene were the Groucho Marx character Driftwood, three stow-aways, two chambermaids, an engineer who comes to turn off the heat, the engineer's large assistant, a manicurist, a young woman looking for her Aunt Minnie, a cleaning woman, and four stewards carrying trays of food.

The British rock group Queen, named one of their albums "A Night At the Opera" in honour of this film.
7. I am a 1934 comedy/crime/mystery directed by W.S. Van Dyke. My plot revolves around a one-time detective, his new heiress wife and their dog, Asta, who set about solving a murder. My stars are William Powell and Myrna Loy, and several sequels followed. What movie am I?

Answer: The Thin Man

"The Thin Man" based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett, starred William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, roles they would reprise in five "Thin Man" sequel movies, from this first 1934 movie up until 1947. In total, William Powell and Myrna Loy starred in 14 films together.

This movie was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Actor in a Leading Role (William Powell); Best Director; Best Picture and Best Writing, Adaption. It was filmed in only 12 days on a budget of $231,000 and was an instant box-office success, making approximately $1.4 million.

In the 1976 spoof comedy movie "Murder by Death", the characters Nick and Nora Charles were played by David Niven and Maggie Smith as Dick and Dora Charleston. The leading characters in the TV series "Hart To Hart" (1979-1984) mimicked Nick and Nora.
8. This 1939 movie tells the life story of a Latin teacher at the English school Brookfield. It is told in flash-back form when, at age 83, he reflects on his teaching career, his marriage, his wife's death, and his life after her death. What movie am I?

Answer: Goodbye Mr Chips

"Goodbye Mr Chips" was directed by Sam Woods and is based on a novel of the same name by James Hilton. The movie starred Robert Donat as Mr Chipping, Greer Garson as his wife Katherine, together with Terry Kilburn, John Mills and Paul Henreid.

The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won one, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Robert Donat). It was up against "Gone With the Wind" in the same seven categories, with Robert Donat taking the Oscar over Clark Gable. However "Gone With the Wind" won five of the other six categories.

Robert Donat was 34 years of age when he made this film, during the course of which he aged over 60 years.

In 1969 this movie was made into a musical starring Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark. Peter O'Toole was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role. In 2002 another version was made for television starring Martin Clunes and Victoria Hamilton.
9. I am a 1939 drama directed by William Dieterle and loosely based on a novel by Victor Hugo. My story is set in France in the fifteenth century and tells the tale of a Gypsy girl accused of the murder of a nobleman and how her friends try to save her from being executed. What movie am I?

Answer: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" stars Charles Laughton as the hunchback Quasimodo and Maureen O'Hara as Esmeralda, the Gypsy. It also features Cedric Hardwicke, Thomas Mitchell, Edmond O'Brien and Harry Davenport. This movie was nominated for two Academy Awards.

It took approximately two and a half hours every day for the make-up to be applied to Charles Laughton for his role as Quasimodo, and over 2,000 wigs were used during the production of the film. Up until its release, this was one of the most expensive films of its time, costing an estimated $1.8 million.

There have been several versions of this story over the years both before and after the 1939 film, but the 1939 film is considered to be the best. In the 1923 silent film, Lon Chaney Senior played the role of Quasimodo. In 1996 a very successful animated version was made by the Walt Disney Studios with the voices of Tom Hulce as Quasimodo and Demi Moore as Esmeralda.
10. I am a 1938 movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Answer: The Lady Vanishes

"The Lady Vanishes" stars Margaret Lockwood as the young socialite, Iris Henderson, Dame May Whity as Miss Froy, along with Michael Redgrave, Paul Lukas, and Cecil Parker. Alfred Hitchcock won the 1939 New York Critics Circle Award for Best Director for this film. The "New York Times" named it the "Best Picture of 1938". Although Michael Redgrave was an established stage actor, this was his first feature film.

At the time when this movie was released in the UK, it was the most successful British film ever.

This was the second-last film made by Alfred Hitchcock before he left Britain and moved to Hollywood. As was the custom of Alfred Hitchcock to appear in his films, he can be seen in this film in a scene near the end at Victoria Station, where he is smoking a cigarette and wearing a dark coat.

In 1979 a remake was made starring Cybill Shepherd, Angela Lansbury, Elliott Gould, Arthur Lowe and Ian Carmichael.
