Since John's insurance did not cover transplant surgeries, he had to come up with a large sum of money in order to get Mike's name on the donor recipient list. John purchased a gun and hold the hospital hostage until his son would get on the organ recipient list.

When it appeared that no heart was available, John said he would kill himself so his heart would go to Mike.

In one scene, Denise called John and told him the hospital was releasing Mike and she ordered him to do something. When Denise found out John took the entire hospital hostage, she was shocked, since she knew John would not hurt a fly.

She was relieved when the hospital director, Rebecca Payne, put Mike's name on the recipient list and the hospital would pay for the surgery.
